Flat Cat grip on a driver - TRAINING AID ONLY (illegal on course)

Recommended Posts

Matt Fitzpatrick is an intriguing guy.

He logs every shot and not just the shot, the wind, temp, grass, etc - and has done so for years.
He has a very unique way of marking his ball.
He's a US Open champ that plays a 10 year old set of irons and I just learned that he has a second driver that he uses as a training aid with a flat cat putter grip.

"During practice rounds and range sessions, Fitzpatrick also keeps a second driver in the bag: a Titleist TSi3 head equipped with his gamer shaft and an oversized Flat Cat putter grip. It’s not a club that will ever actually go into the bag for competition, though. It’s simply something he uses as a training aid. “It helps me keep the right hand on top through impact rather than flipping and it keeps the face stable through impact,” Fitzpatrick said. “I really like that drill.”

I have a flat cat, and a spare driver. I might just have to give this a try.

Has anyone tried this before?

I've never tried it, but I love the idea.  I tried a Flat Cat years ago, but it never dawned on me to put it on anything other than a putter.

apparently he has it at a precise angle so that the club gets into the proper position at the top.

Never even thought to try it.  The PGA players do weird stuff just like us 🙂

Here's a recent clip on Fitz describing the grip and how he uses it.

Flat Cat was having a sale (20% off for Labor Day) so I just bought one plus a backup driver shaft to give this a go. I think it’s really intriguing. I have a tendency to present too much loft and I think this setup will be a great way to really feel where the face is.

Plus I think Fitz is a cool and want to be like him.

I did it. I haven’t gotten to the range, but started swinging it in the house. It really gives you a feel for the club face that I haven’t felt in any other training aid. Hoping it works out.
