Childers is truly one of a kind. His vocalizations are incredible, and the Purgatory album is squarely in my personal top 5 all time albums.

Preach - he's an incredible performer!  His gospel "remix" album (Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven?) is a favorite of mine as well.

I so badly want to see "Way of the Triune God" performed live.

I'm only slightly jealous that you and Jason got to see him in concert.😬

Such a cool take on that album with hearing each of the songs in multiple formats. Can't wait for his new album to come out in September!

I have video from when he did Honky Tonk Flame at the Opry...when I have time this afternoon I'll upload it. I was like a giddy school girl during the entire set. He only did three or four songs and I wish he would have just been the entire show 🤣

Ok, couldn’t wait till the afternoon lol. Here’s a clip of Childers from The Opry back in May 2018. Not a ton of vocals but a sweet little guitar picking session. It was just him and the guitar on stage, no band, and was so damn good.

Sam, is it safe to assume you have not listened to any of Tyler Childer's music? Because if you can listen to these tracks, and genuinely not like them, I mean truly have a disdain for them, I have to question whether or not you're trolling or just genuinely, passionately, dislike the country music genre lol.

... More than you probably asked for ... I grew up in the South and while the accent still occassionally holds some charm, I just don't wanna hear it in my music. My youth was filled with racism of the most vile nature and even saw the KKK parking cars at high school football games, robes, hoods and all that evidently were just a part if life in the South during the late 50's and early 60's. I still see confederate flags at Country concerts and more than a few still espouse those racist opinions today, so all in all it still produces a very negative reaction from deep inside.  I would never say the music itself all sounds the same, but it seems to be very similar. Unlike the Beatles, ZZ Top, Steely Dan, the Eagles, Creedence, Marvin Gaye and Zeppilen as well as many one hit wonders that have radically different musical sounds.

... If either of those songs came on the radio while driving as soon as I heard that redneck voice, I'd instantly change the channel. So yea, I genuinely do not like them. I have always passionately loved music and exactly why I have an audiophile system and listen to it daily. Still turn out the lights and listen to entire CD's a couple times a month. Working afternoons from 2-6pm 5 days a week at a Country Station and forced to listen to music I didn't care for wasn't helpful either. And to add flames to the fire, the vast majority of the time here in Phoenix when someone is playing their music so loud on a golf course it can literally be heard from a fairway away, 80% of the time it is country. All that said, If Country is something you, and clearly others here enjoy, I think that is awesome because I think the more music anyone can enjoy the better and I wish I could share your adoration but I do truly dislike the Country music genre.

All fair and valid points, can't fault you for disliking it when it's associated for you with what you witnessed growing up. I'm fortunate enough to not have any first hand witnessing of extreme racial issues. I can't imagine how uncomfortable I would find myself in the situations you outlined. Thankfully, not everyone in country music/who likes country music holds those beliefs. Tyler's most recently released single, In Your Love, is actually a love story about two gay coal miners. Causing a stir with some of the "country fans" you and I both dislike. He does what he does and doesn't care what people think. Another reason I am a big fan of his. Battled and overcame alcohol and drug addiction and openly addresses and sings about it. But 100% to each their own and I hope I am not coming off as criticizing or anything like that.

... Not at all and amen, to each their own. 🥰  That said I do get a chuckle out of those born and raised in a big city that think they are country at heart. Or those born and raised in the country that think they know what living in a big city is like. Born and  growing up in rural America, spending time in small towns and medium sized cities moving from radio station to radio station and most of my life in a big city, I have pretty much experienced it all. In the end and deep down, people are just people but heavily influenced by their formative years.

100% true. Hate breeds hate and it’s disgusting to me that people still hold on to some of the ugly ideologies brought about from the past.

Sam,

although it isn’t necessary, thank you for providing a thoughtful and well written explanation of your disdain for country music. I respect your opinion and have no intention of trying to change it. That being said, I would like to offer some additional context for your consideration. The Country Music label casts a wide shadow over a lot of sub-genres that are lumped there for lack of a better alternative. Some of the music we have been sharing and discussing falls firmly in the Country category while others are more closely described as Americana or Western. FWIW, artists such as Tyler Childers, Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson have been outspoken and transparent in their criticism and condemnation of homophobia, misogyny, and racism. You are right to point out how pervasive and heinous racism is, though I would add that I see almost as many confederate flags in Ohio as I do in Alabama. Which only goes to show that morons are legion and we are all swimming in a sea of stupid.

I love the music of your era, I grew up listening to most of the bands that you listed. But thirst for great music compels me to continually seek out that which I have not heard and add that which I find interesting to the vast repository in my mind. The artists I have named have contributed to that repository, but ultimately it is mine alone. I have no expectations that everyone else likes the same things I do, that would be boring.

and lastly, Bro Country (that which you hear on the radio) is absolute horsesh*t and musical masturbation. 😁

Bro country exploded in popularity when I was in college and shortly after. As soon as Florida Georgia Line released "Cruise" it's been a constant bombardment of that style of music. It sucks, too, because some of these artists, including Tyler Hubbard & Bryan Kelly, are very musically talented. But some of the songs coming out anymore are exactly as Sam describes, the same sound with different words.

I am going strongly into the direction of Folk, Americana, and Appalachia style country music. More depth in lyrics, more impressive instrumental styles, and not just the cookie cutter, "try to get you amped up out of your mind at a 4 day country music festival and chug beer," music.

Kip Moore, who I keep going back to also, has some John Mellenkamp elements to his music, and what I love about him is that each of his albums have a different sound. Much like Eric Church. Just do what they do and frankly don't give darn what anyone thinks.

... The only true constant in life is change. As an outsider I only hear of some Country artist writing or saying something stoopid every now and then but it of course makes headlines. I do not hear about the vast majority that are the same as every other artist, perfecting and sharing their craft with the kind of open mind of most artists. I also applaud your diverse musical tastes and I am always on the lookout for new music. As a guitar lover I had no idea Justin Johnson even existed until @silver & black turned me on to him in another thread and now I own several of his LPs. The Sirius XM station Jam On has also introduced me to quite a bit of new music.

... But in the end after insightful lyrics and singular or diverse instrumentation, it comes down to this: does it sound pleasing to my ear. Even ignoring my background, most country music simply does not reach that purely audio criteria. That said, I keep an open mind or would never have discovered Free/Into The Mystic or Sound & Fury.

So, @chisag because I'm curious and a little bored at work today, what is that one song that you can't help but crank all the way up when it comes on? Is it one of the aforementioned songs or is there something else?

Okay. We have had some fun with/at the expense of Westerns and Country Music which actually started as a discussion about song writers. What will today/tonight’s topic du jour be, I wonder?

... After 10 years in radio I am emotionally tied to many, many songs so picking one is impossible. But if forced to choose just one and for a myriad of reasons including combining my two favorite LPs in James Gang Rides Again and Desperado into one new group, it would be Hotel California. I have heard it literally thousands and thousands of times but when it comes on, I still turn up the volume.

There are probably others, as well. But the first song that came to mind:

The back beat and guitars get me ready to run through a brick wall every time…

Desperado is on a short list of albums for me, that have no skips. Flawless from start to finish and arguably the best thing the eagles ever created.

... On a completely different note, I have been playing with a mixed set of King Tour irons. 9, 7, 5 shafted with Steelfiber i80's and Pw, 8, 6 and 4 still shafted with Recoil 95's. I finally pulled the Recoils and installed the i80's in all my irons and looking forward to playing them today (106*) and tomorrow (109*) before 110* and above temps come back for 10 days.

Out of curiosity, what do you find as the biggest benefit of graphite iron shafts for your game? Is it more speed? Tighter dispersion? Better feel? I’ve never played graphite iron shafts, mostly due to cost, but some of it is admittedly an outdated attitude toward graphite being for lower swing speed golfers.

I’ve never played graphite iron shafts, mostly due to cost, but some of it is admittedly an outdated attitude toward graphite being for lower swing speed golfers.

... Cost is almost irrelevant as some steel is even more expensive these days but some do charge extra for upgrades so I get it. The golf swing takes a toll on your body, especially your joints and the bigger divots you take the worst the damage. It was a nasty bout with elbow tendonitis that drove me to 130gm Aldila Tour graphite shafts 20 years ago and I never went back to steel. More accurately when my MIM's arrived for review they had Nippon 950GH installed and I played them for about a month before my elbow just started hurting and I quickly installed Steelfiber shafts, so I did try again just once.

... I know you said "outdated" but considering DeCahmbeau plays graphite in his irons, that should put graphite in irons is for slower swing speeds to rest forever. But some of the benefits are you can control the torque and flex points changing it from short irons to long irons for better feel as well as improved dispersion in short irons to a higher trajectory and proper distance in long irons. Flight Control allows the same set to have stiffer short iron and softer long irons without changing the shaft profile. And while certainly not a night and day difference, accuracy is just a little better with graphite that fits your swing. I do not want or need more distance with lighter weight graphite so distance and gapping was the same with the Nippons an Steelfibers. I would add the Recoils are more dampened but I find Steelfibers to feel right in the middle and not as dampened as Recoils but not as harsh as steel, so the best of both worlds.

... But it really is the fact that graphite produces less wear and tear on your joints. The more you play the more obvious it is. And since our swings resemble the LPGA more than the PGA, even the longest hitters on the LPGA mostly play Steelfibers in their irons when accuracy dictates how they make their living. I never get tried of repeating Tiger held the record for consecutive GIR with 37 and J Y Ko shattered that record with 63 playing Steelfibers in her irons. So I think everyone should at least demo graphite to see how it compares and how they feel after hitting them.
