GolfSpy_APH
Testers Announced! for the Arias Golf Canada TB-30 Chipper! About Arias Golf Canada Founded in 2015 by J.R. Robert, it took Arias Golf Canada two years to perfect their first model for the public. What sets Arias Golf Canada apart? They are a small, family-run business based in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. However, their irons, wedges, or chipper, all with zero offset and sometimes a bit of onset, truly differentiate them. Robert and Arias believe many golfers struggle adjusting from drivers and woods, which have some onset, to irons with varying degrees of offset. What is Offset and Onset? Offset is the distance between the leading edge of the face of an iron or wedge and the front part of the hosel pointing to the target at address. It means the leading edge sits behind the hosel. Onset is the opposite. The leading edge is ahead of the front part of the hosel. Arias says one thing is clear: "For all golfers who dislike the look of offset on their irons and wedges, offset is a useless, annoying feature that should never be there." Product to Test! Their TB-30 chipper's unique no-offset build could enhance alignment and precision shot-making around the green. It could also potentially aid golfers who struggle with chunking chips and tight lies around the greens. Arias says "the TB-30 is a must-have if you struggle to get up and down around the green with conventional wedges or prefer using your putter from the back of the fringe." BigMacQue
Good morning Golf Spies, hope you all are doing well. I would wish blue skies, fairways and greens for each and every one of you. My name is Dennis, I travel around this forum as BigMaQue, a nickname that has stuck with me since I joined the Air Force in 1975. I spell it somewhat uniquely for a reason; more on that later. I’m 66 years old, will be 67 in just a few weeks, and claim Spring Hill, FL as my home. I’ve been married - to the same woman - since 1982, so I guess that means we’re coming up on 42 years of her patience and tolerance. I don’t think I’ve hit her limit yet but hey, the day is young. She’s the more talented one; she has played the violin for close to 60 years and taught violin in the school system for more than 10 years. We have two children, and each of them has two children, and all are evenly matched sets: we have a daughter and a son and they each have a daughter and a son. Our daughter and her two kids live next door to us in Florida; our son and his wife live with their two kids in Maryland. I retired in 2021 from a forty-plus year in healthcare, although I long ago in that career left any semblance of care-giving behind. When I left active duty Air Force I was hired to run a kitchen in a hospital, and did that for the first six years of my time in hospitals. My wife and I met in the first place I worked, she was a nurse and I oversaw kitchen operations. I moved onto a second hospital and ran the Food Service Department, which included having several dieticians and diet techs working for me, along with a qualified chef that had been taught in the old school way in Scotland. I had an interest in computers, and as that interest expanded and the hospital was adding automation, I was approached to take over the IS/IT department. I took the opportunity, and it has paid off in spades for me over time. I went from that hospital to another with the administration team, and then the CEO and the CFO that I was working with asked me to join them in forming a senior housing / senior care company. I assumed the CIO duties and we spent just over 20 years buying, building, selling and managing assisted living facilities throughout the South East. We had sold off our real estate assets in 2019, so the opportunity to cash out and retire presented itself …. I took it. Along the way I’ve assumed a few different roles and done a few different things. I entered the Air Force Reserve and spent 21 years doing Reserve duty, so I am a retired AF vet. I also became a Chaplain with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and while working with football and basketball teams at a local high school participated in some coaching opportunities. I was a lousy football player, but did have a few skills - kicking and catching - that I could help with so I jumped in and helped boys with that. My basketball skills were much better, so my time there while serving as their Chaplain was a little more productive. I developed a relationship with both the football and the basketball coach that has endured for more than a dozen years, and as luck would have it: the basketball coach is also the golf coach. So when it became clear that my grandson would be attending that school, I jumped in and asked to be considered an Assistant Golf Coach. I really don’t do much teaching of anything that’s truly golf, although I can help boys correct things - most of the kids have been through several years of lessons and know what to do, they just need some help from time to time correcting a fluke or a flaw. I started playing golf with my dad in my teens, and played into my 20’s and 30’s, but was never very good at the game at all. I got to a point where I realized I was spending money and time, taking both away from my growing family, and just didn’t see much point in continuing to do that. I stopped play for very close to 30 years. Then my grandson picked up a club one day. Oh. My. Goodness. The boy has a natural swing. I had to get back into this and exploit that, and as it turns out he really loves the sport. As a Freshman this past season he was Springstead’s number one player, overtaking two Juniors that had played varsity golf for three years. As it will undoubtedly become apparent I’m very proud of him - as I am of all of my grandkids, but so far he’s the only one that accompanies me on the golf course. His sister is a swimmer, a very good swimmer who has in fact qualified for state in both her Sophomore and Junior years, but swimming …. Well, it’s just not the same. We can swim together but it’s a lot more fun when my grandson makes fun of me for duffing a shot. He beats me routinely and that’s fine by me. Aside from golf, I love to play in the wood shop - I made a table for the front porch yesterday - I do pottery on my wheel and in my kiln, and of course love to cook. Florida is our home but 11 years ago we built a cabin in the woods, up on a hill, in North Georgia and we spend a lot of time up there. Works for me because there is a great resort with a golf course just six miles from the cabin and the pro and I have become friends. My wife knows that I will pack the clubs and always make sure there is room for them. My bag is predominantly Titleist, with a Cleveland Launcher Fairway wood that is due to be replaced after a Titleist fitting that's scheduled for March and a Cleveland putter. This test is with a club with a 44 degree loft; I will pit it against my Titleist T400 that sports a 43 degree loft. My testing will include some time with a simulator and at the range and the practice green, but will be done predominantly on the course. I have some pretty good numbers for my 43 degree T400, so I believe I have a solid foundation to determine how well I can or will or could play with this club. If it outperforms the T400, it will be in my bag. I did a cursory review of the Arias web site and understand their design differences, I'm very curious to see how that helps, hinders or makes no difference to me as I swing the club. I honestly have no expectations - I'm just excited to contribute and do something different and with a little purpose on the golf course. I tend to aim for par; to me this means that I don't always care about GIR, I care more about getting close enough to the pin that I can close out the hole with a good score. I'd like to see this club help me with that strategy. I asked for the club to be pretty much standard in configuration except for adding a one-half inch length to the club so that it matches my other clubs, and a mid-size wrap on the grip. So … why is it spelled BigMacQue? Well I’m glad you asked. In 1996 our son became the first profoundly deaf student to participate in the Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee. This made a bit of a media splash, and one day he asked me how I did in a spelling bee. I told him the truth: for some reason, I fouled out on the word factory. He couldn’t believe it; he asked me, “how did you spell it?” I told him: phaquetorie. He still doesn’t believe me. Off the porch, out of the box and in the bag: unboxing and first impressions. The club arrived yesterday, perfectly within the time frame that DHL said they would deliver. I'll hit it today at Hernando Oaks and we'll see how it goes. Packaging: 19/20 Hard to knock Arias for the box, as it was opened and inspected, most likely as it went through customs. After all the box did look like it could contain anything from a walking cane to a SAM. The original envelopes that were put on my Arias were cut open, and that info put into a new folder by the inspector. All in all though, the box was fine, and the boxing was fine. Inside the box the club was wrapped up very well and there were some packing paper wads used to ensure the club didn't waggle around during shipping. I'd say it arrived just fine. First impression: 18/20 The club appears to be very well built, solid, and put together well. I asked for the logo up on the grip and it is, I asked for the logo up on the shaft and the shaft logo stickers were loose in the box. Not that big of a deal really, but enough to take 2 points off in my book. The shaft is a True Temper and has a perfect finish, the club head is clean and clear. The club is shorter than I anticipated - it's a true chipper, made for chipping, and not for any real wedge work. I asked for 1/2" over standard and got a club that is exactly the same length as my putter. Overall I'm very satisfied with the packaging and feel they did a good job protecting a nice club. Next step, the course. Playing this afternoon and the club is already in my bag. One more pic, a first look at the zero offset, from the shooter perspective: Final Review Took me a bit longer to get to this final review than I expected; I had a chance to play with some friends last week and had them all try it. Down to brass tacks: This is a nice club. It’s well built, well put together and is a quality built golf club from tip to toe. It performs exactly as it should; if you typically struggle around the green with that one last chip to get on I’d recommend this club in a heartbeat. The club design enhances the swing and the intended purpose and I don’t think anyone would be disappointed in having this club in their bag. I personally didn’t notice an advantage to the zero offset that Arias touts, but I can see that may be an advantage on longer clubs. For this club's intended purpose, chips around the green, the zero offset wasn’t really noticeable to me. In play it took some time to get used to the club; I had luck with it on the practice green but it took a few rounds to get used to it in play. At the end of my testing I was successfully hitting 90% of my shots with this club, which is at least as good as I normally do in chipping onto the green. I used this club in numerous situations, some that were not the intended use at all. I hit it over bunkers, out of rough, from 65 yards out and even off the cart path once. From the pics you can see that it looks no worse for wear, the club held up very well. My numbers: Aesthetics: 20 out of 20 This is a well-built, solid and nice looking club. Nothing short of excellence in the build. Numbers: 20 out of 20 I spent very little time in the simulator with this club. It's use is primarily short use around the green, and the simulator numbers just didn't seem to help much. Things like roll out, spin control, and the needed pin-point accuracy just don't come out of simulator numbers. I can't knock the club for that, so 20 /20. Success rate, the club in play: 18 out of 20 My success rate measure was two-fold: did it put the ball where I wanted it and did give me a shot at a par. Keep in mind this is my success with the club, my experience on the course. Once I mastered the club in play it was very effective, and success was measured as within 6 feet of my goal, either the pin or a specific spot on the green I could putt from. This is basically 90% of the time, I could put the ball where I wanted it. I hit this club from distances out to about 65 yards, I hit it over bunkers, I hit it out of rough, and even hit it off the cart path. To be fair, to determine success, I only counted shots that I felt the club was designed for: chips around the green, to get the ball to the hole, and I only counted shots in play - not the practice green. All told, in all the rounds I played with this club, I hit it as it was intended 43 times and hit it where I wanted it to go 38 times. The miscellaneous numbers: 9 out of 10 I had no issues with the club, once I got used to it I could use it very effectively and it performed well. I particularly liked the feel of the club in the swing. It’s weighted differently than my T400’s, with what feels like an elongated weight along the bottom of the club that enhances the performance of the club in its intended use. The only drawback for me was the length of the club; I had an inch added to the shaft and it was exactly the same length as my putter. My comparable T400 is almost an inch and a half longer, and this was one of the things that took some getting used to. Play it or trade it: I almost hate to say 14 out of 20 I have a full bag, 14 clubs, and this one had to beat a 43 degree T400. The T400 is just a lot more versatile and I can chip with it as well as I can chip with the Arias Chipper. So for me, this one won’t be in the bag. That is no knock on the club; it’s just a personal decision based on the clubs I have. My final score: 90 out of 100 Bottom Line This is a very nice club, very well built, well designed and it does exactly what it’s designed for and sold as. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this club to someone that needed help with their chipping. Edited March 25 by BigMacQue 0124 added intro text. 0202 added unboxing. 0325 posted final review. Popular Post Bulldog
Arias TB-30 Chipper Test - Bulldog Bulldog - Wait. You want me to test a golf chipper? MGS - Yes. Bulldog - Where’s it from? MGS - Canada. Bulldog - So Quebec or Montreal? MGS - No, from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Bulldog - Seriously? What’s next, golf clubs from Finland? OK, that conversation didn’t really happen (except in my head), but I AM really excited to be one of the testers of the Arias Chipper. My name is Jim. I live in Lodi, California which is about 90 minutes east of San Francisco. If you’re old enough to remember the Creedence Clearwater Revival song, “Lodi”, raise your hand. If you want to visualize the Lodi, think Nebraska… with grapes. I’m married, and both my wife and I are retired. She taught kindergarten, and I was a database engineer. I retired from the local school district where I managed the data for the Office of Assessment, Research, and Evaluation. Best job ever! Somewhere along the way, I managed to get an M.B.A. We have two adult daughters. One lives nearby with her civil engineer, and occasional golfer, husband, along with all four of our grandkids - 16, 13, 11, and 6. The other daughter lives in Las Vegas. She is a newlywed (last October). Her husband is in the Air Force stationed at Nellis. He is serious golfer who outdrives me by 80+ yards. I’m the coordinator of a fellowship golf group from our church. We have 18 guys in the group. Some of them play weekly, others play yearly. We play on Tuesdays for three weeks in a row at our local course, then play an “away game” somewhere else. Handicaps run from 7 to 35 (that’s not a typo). I started playing golf just after we were married, borrowing, and occasionally breaking, my father-in-law’s clubs. My wife surprised me with a set of McGregor Golden Bear clubs. Now those are found in antique shops. Between family and work, I played off and on. I finally took lessons and saw my scores drop, and got hooked. Sometime in there, I started building golf clubs. I’ve built several hundred clubs for friends and family over the years. Of the 14 clubs in my bag, only three are store bought. I’m currently a 12 handicap searching for that elusive way to get to single digits. Actually, it’s not elusive. My instructor once told me, “If you want to lower your handicap, work on your short game.” which leads me to…the Chipper. You see, I chip a lot. No, I mean it - A LOT. My chipping is just OK. Not bad, not great. So, now I’ve revealed my motivation to be a tester. I’ve never used a chipper, but I want to see if this chipper will change my game. I plan on using it like crazy at practice and during regular play. The loft on the Arias chipper is one degree different than my pitching wedge. That’s my comparison target. It will be a battle of titans, "Chipper vs Pitching Wedge!", “Senior Golfer Joins the Tour! Wins the Masters!” Ok, that’s too much hyperbole, but I plan to test them head to head, and find out if the Arias can make a difference. Stay tuned. First Impressions - 9 out of 10 Unboxing and First Impressions Takeaways - Quality finish Low profile head Putter like feel Doesn't look like a chipper Zero offset is not distracting The Arias chipper arrived yesterday afternoon. After a journey of more than 3,500 miles, it was secure and intact. It was carefully packaged, and included a spec sheet for the club, a page with information on lie angle fitting, and two shaft labels. Upon handling the club, there were a few surprises: It has a low profile head. It’s definitely a smaller looking head than any club I’ve used, but the shape is pleasing to my eye. The second surprise is the weight. With a head weight of 324 grams, this chipper comes in close to putter weight territory. The third surprise is the lie angle which is at 70°. My current putter is 69°. There's definitely have a putter setup feeling over the ball. The club is 34.5” long. That also comes close to my putter at 34”. After looking it over, It’s clearly a quality club. You can compare this to any premium club out there, including Japanese models, and it will match them for it fit and finish. No weird medallions or stickers,, just a logo on the back of the club, “TB-30” in small letters below the logo, and “True Zero Offset” etched on the sole without paint. The shaft is a True Temper Multistep Lite Steel 120g in R flex. This will be a new shaft for me to try. The zero offset doesn't jump out at you. I grabbed a couple of wedges and irons to compare. The difference is small on my clubs. I'm curious to see how it affects contact with the ball. Arias calls the scalloped back edge, "back channels" to aid in gliding the head through the grass. Thankfully, the word “Chipper” is nowhere to be seen. At a glance, it looks like any iron, which is just what I want. I can’t bring myself to use one of those goofy looking Frankenstein chippers. I’ll save the feel for later but, spoiler alert, after chipping a few shots on my lawn, I really, really want to get to the course and try this out. I've decided to pull my 5 hybrid out to make room for the Chipper. I normally carry a 4, 5, and 6 hybrid. The 4 and 6 will have to cover for the 5. Update - I used the TB-30 Chipper at Pebble Beach this week. Ok, it was at a local golf simulator studio. I've hit in simulators for fittings, but this was the first time I've played a simulated round of golf. Unfortunately, I didn't have many shots where the chipper came into play. The club was fine with its solid feel. The issue for me, and my golf buddy, was that chipping, and putting, in a sim is just weird. Taking a full swing on number 7 and getting a (simulated) gimme birdie was fun. But, even with graphic assistance for the slope of the greens, I could not figure out distance on short shots at all. Chipping a 3D ball into a 2D image doesn’t visually connect with distance in my brain. I think I was chipping to the screen. I have a net in my backyard and it’s the same issue there. The owner of the sim studio is a MGS reader and follows testing. He tried the Arias Chipper. His reaction seemed to be a mix of interest, befuddlement, and doubt. He loved the look of the TB-30. My buddy, Jack putting for birdie on number 7 at Pebble Beach. The weather forecast looks much better for this coming week, followed by a week of rain. I’ll be playing Tuesday on one of my favorite courses in the area with short, chippable rough around the greens. I plan on testing the Arias chipper there every chance I get. Update - 2/14/24 Yesterday, I used the Arias chipper on course for the first time. Unfortunately, the course was a mess. It was cart path only. One of my playing partners use the word, “quagmire” multiple times. We’ve been hit by multiple storms here (in California) in the past two weeks with a lot more coming soon. The courses are so wet they don’t mow the rough because the mowers with sink into the ground. U.S. Open anyone? I lost three balls in the rough... found four. I was only able to try the chipper four times, including once from deep rough (my score was toast by then, so why not). Lesson one - the chipper and deep rough don’t mix. So three shots is not much data. Overall, my impression so far is that it might be wise to think of the chipper as “Putter B”. This is not the best scenario for chipping. I ended up about 7 feet from the pin. Like putting, I believe distance control is king in chipping, and that takes some practice. I have never liked practicing the short game. I know - that’s where you can improve the quickest, but hitting full swing shots is just more fun. However, that’s changed recently. Now I go straight to the practice green and chip and putt. That motivation to practice short game might be the biggest surprise yet for getting a chipper. Note - I’m practicing with both the Arias and my regular clubs to get a fair comparison. Final Review Aesthetics: 20 out of 20 It didn’t take long for me to appreciate the looks, sound, and feel of the Arias TB-30 Chipper. It has the look of a miniature wedge, if there is such a thing. The zero offset seems to make alignment easier. The sound is a satisfying “click”. But the best thing is the feel. It’s solid and satisfying. The scalloped back edge, along with the high swing weight, gives the vibe of a medieval Scottish weapon. The scalloped edge also makes it easy to spot the club hidden among the others in my bag. The Numbers: 15 out of 20 I’ve been able to use it during six rounds, plus plenty of sessions at the practice greens on three nearby courses. It has a pretty specific range for it’s use. For me, it's shots between 15 to 40 yards. Short green side chips, and chips from the rough didn't work out for me. It's a niche club that can work well when you have some room to for the ball to roll out on the green. Stopping power on the green is not it's strong point. On the Course: 15 out of 20 Over the course of a round, there might be two to four times where using the chipper would fit the situation. It took some time and practice to figure out when to use it and when to leave it in the bag. When the situation is right for the flight and roll that the chipper produces, it can work well. I found accuracy was good, but getting distance control down takes practice. Using it has the feel of putting, more than swinging a club. Developing a consistent stroke technique is a must. The Good, the Bad, the In-between: 8 out of 10 What I like about the Arias chipper: It feels, looks, and sounds great. It doesn’t look like a typical goofy chipper that draws snarky remarks. It’s easy to aim at the target. It can produce really satisfying results under the right circumstances. What I don’t like about he Arias chipper: It requires specific sets of conditions in order to have a good probability of success. It adds a decision in your play - whether to use it or another club. It takes a slot in the bag. You have to decide what club to leave at home. It just didn’t work from the rough for me. Stays in the bag? 15 out of 20 Surprising myself, I plan on leaving it in the bag, at least for a while. I want to see if my skills with it can improve so that it will be more useful in a variety of situations. I really want to improve distance control. I also want to try unique shots like fussy bump and run shots from under a tree to the fairway, short approach shots to the green, and using it on the on the green for those impossibly long shots. Conclusion For those who are already confident in chipping, or who are working to improve their chipping, the Arias is probably not for them. So, would I recommend the Arias chipper to others? The answer is a conditional “Yes.” If chipping is your nemesis - Yes. If you have the "chipping yips". - Yes. If you don’t want your golf buddies to know that you are using a chipper - Yes. If you want just one club to chip with - Yes. RjGolf4Life
Hello MGS fam! My name is Rolly. This is my 2nd blessed invitation to test a product. My first test was the latest Titlist “TEST” ball. That was pretty cool to be part of. Now I am blessed to be 1 of 3 testers I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was born and raised in San Francisco. I currently work for the City & County of SF. I could be retiring in less than 3 years at which point I just want to travel and golf. I am 53 years old and am on my 2nd marriage which is a definite blessing for me. I have 3 grown kids now (24, 23 & 21). I am fortunate they all have stayed out of trouble and doing good things with their lives. I have been golfing off and on for over 30 years. My current index is 8.7. The strongest part of my game is my “SCRAMBLE ABILITY” I wish I did not have to scramble so much BUT that is why majority of us are a work in progress. I should be receiving the product soon and will provide my first impression. Not sure why the club was delayed getting to me BUT it has arrived and I will be updating with my first impressions... SNEAK PEAK... FIRST IMPRESSIONS - 9/10 TB-30 chipper has arrived... Open the box and there was plenty of packaging to ensure the club did not get damaged. Pulled the TB-30 out and the club itself was wrapped up including bubble wrap around the head. These are the dimensions i ordered: The first thing I noticed once I unwrapped the club was the WEIGHT. It felt SOLID. When I grabbed the mid-size handle, it felt nice. I have mid-size grips on all of my irons. The Lampkin grip feels tacky which is nice. The club felt secure in my hand. Visually, the club is appealing to my eye. Like @Bulldog said, the head is low profile. When you like up a ball with the head, I feel confident that I can strike it solidly. The overall look and feel for the TB-30 is impressive to me. As you can see, it looks like a very simple club. Standing over the club feels nice. I feel confident at address. We will see Joe confident I am once I take this to the range to get a true feel for it. The clubhead of the TB-30 is supposed to help get through the rough smoothly. We will see how that actuality works I gave this club a 9/10 for first impression because I had to put the True Temper label on the shaft. Not sure why Arias did not out the label on. The way I plan to conduct the testing for the TB-30 is to first go to the range so that I can get a feel for the club. Determine whether I will use a putter grip or regular club grip. I would imagine that the distance from hole as well as the path to the hole will dictate how I play it. Stay tuned MGS family... Until my next update, stay safe & healthy. Go 49ers!
