Happy birthday somebody learned to putt again! What a day! Hit 12 fairways and 13 greens. However, the story of the day was 27 putts. A clean card with no bogies! Got it up and down every time. The last drive of the day was the bomb. However, in full disclosure a huge gale came in. Hit a hard rope hook down wind and it took off! Heck of a day!!!

Enjoy the long drives while you can!  Once you get to my age with hip replacements and back surgery, you appreciate the distances you used to be able to  get!

Thanks and I hear you. Actually, I hear it daily from the guys I play with here. I am older with replaced knees and back issues. However, I work hard in the gym and with stretching daily. So, I hope to hold off the loss in distance as long as possible. However, I am still not close to being as long as when I was younger. I think the advance in equipment has helped a lot!

I'll hit 70 next month - so I need firm ground and a good tailwind to get 250 - 270!  Don't know where the time has gone!

Today started as a picture-perfect Chamber of Commerce day in Key West.  When the sun rose (and we were waiting at the first tee for the first break of light) it was low to mid 70's, low humidity, light breeze and sunny skies.  We had a great turnout for a men's league Saturday, so things were looking up.  The good news is that I recovered from a poor showing on Thursday to play decent today.

image.png.4b13cdefc4c110bacdd7a0365ffc21a2.png

I hit 12 of 14 fairways, missing one to the left and one to the right (which I actually planned given the tucked far left pin placement).  For some reason, my drivers were longer today.  I actually had a 207 yard drive on 18 and three others over 180 yards.  My performance average was 184 yards which is about 5 yards longer than my 2024 rounds to date.   Though I only had one green in regulation, I was pleased that only two-thirds of my approach shots were short (as that's usually higher).  Two left, two right and one long is giving me hope that I'm improving.  My chipping and putting was decent.  My six up and downs was at or maybe slightly better than average.  The 23 putts number is deceiving as I had another six up and downs one putts for bogies.  I found something in my putting stroke on the back nine and for the last 5 holes I one putted each green and made 67 feet of putts.

My play has been a little streaky as of late.  My fronts nines are OK and my back nines have been super.   Even within a round, I'll have mini streaks.  Like today, I was one over after my first three holes (one streak) and pared five straight holes on the back (13-17).  Next week, I'm going to try and replicate the one thing I found in my putting stroke and look to be a bit more consistent in my play.  We'll see!

Definitely true; however, at age 74 (75 next month), I have found that extensive stretching and flexibility routines along with golf-specific targeted light weight and resistance band training helps in regaining some of that lost distance.

A few years ago (spring of 2021), I was suffering from extreme hip and back pain following a life-threatening combination of severe infections in my hips, spine and bloodstream caused by a bad surgery. I had also had six separate knee surgeries including ACL, MCL, and multiple meniscus tears to both knees. That is when I started my stretching and weight training program. Since late summer to fall of that year (2021), I have managed to regain about 25-30 yards in driving distance, and more than a full club of distance with my irons (about 12-15 yards per club). My driver clubhead speed has increased by almost 10 MPH, and I have regained 6 to 9 MPH with the irons without going to lighter weight or more flexible shafts.

My role model for doing this type of training and stretching has been Bernhard Langer, who I find to be a remarkable example of what such a training regimen can do, not only for one’s golf game, but also for a person’s overall health and endurance.

Eventually managed 18 holes 74 nett 66. For a guy post July that was playing 4 rounds a week this is only my 6th full round since July and my last 4 rounds have been  2, 9, 14 and 13 holes. Happy with just making it round, couple of sloppy doubles and never holed a putt but physically made it round and felt good.

After a rocky start, 48 front, I got the ship righted and came back with a 42. The course was playing a little better after some rain. Grass has been filling in some of the rough patches so the balls don't roll back downhill at me. I'll try to get some photos included in the next few rounds I post.

I arrived at the course feeling good physically and mentally because I replaced my 3 & 4 irons with 7 & 8 woods. I was going to swing easy with them and play well. Unfortunately, I took 5 penalties with these 2 clubs. They will not be in the bag tomorrow.  I’ll also have different wedges because the shafts may be too light in my Taylormades. Although it could just be bad swings.

Tomorrow will be a big day for the handicap. I have a 75 dropping off and it depends on what I shoot to replace it with. Currently my next lowest score not being used is an 85. I hope to replace it with a 69, but the likelihood of it increasing is better than decreasing, but I never know.

This was a tough round.  44°F all day.  Supposed to be overcast but no rain, but rained for over half the round.  Had rained pretty hard the day before and this course apparently does not drain at all.  Pretty much a swamp, about 30% of the fairway had standing water.  Feet would sink 1/4" or more into the mud.

Highlight was an amazing (for me) drive of 225yd on hole 1 with no warm up.  The rest is pretty apparent from the score card.  Too many duffs into soggy mud.

Managed to get out to a sim for a few hours tonight and played Payne's Valley - twice! Managed to shoot exactly the same score (81) both rounds, lol. At least I'm consistent.

Short game once again saved me from too much trouble - lots of quality chips/putts.

Can't wait to get back out onto a real course this week - as much fun as it is pretend playing a cool course, just not the same 😜
