Wedge Fitting Worth It?

Recommended Posts

Yes, wedge fitting is very important.  A couple of years ago I spent time with the Vokey rep hitting a bunch of different lofts, grinds, bounces etc.  He handed me a wedge and only told me what loft I was hitting. I had no idea on the bounce or grind.  After about 45 min he gave me my perscription and I must say that what he recommended works great for me. Yes, get fit!

All clubs are important to get fit for. Getting the right loft, grind and bounce go along way to better and more consistent wedge play.

I go back and forth between whether wedges are the most important clubs to get fit for or the least important. Most important because they're your scoring clubs, least important because of the high loft and ability to put your iron shaft into your GW (and then why not just stick a Hi-Rev or something in your SW/LW).

What say you?

Definitely worth the fitting. Key for wedges is it's an outdoor fitting and you can try them in the various areas like bunkers. Thicker rough and more!

I was fit for wedges at Golf Galaxy on the indoor sim last year. All that I could really tell from the fitting was the feel.  Not sure how you can validate the grind on an indoor mat.

I think fitting is key with wedges.  I also think fittings outdoors in bunkers and rough is also key to the right fit.  Yes a fairway is a good start but getting a feel in odd lies is important.

I have never been fit specifically for wedges, but I would imagine that they are about the hardest clubs to fit. Not only are there different manufacturers with different wedge models in their lineup, but the various lofts, grinds, bounces, groove patterns, etc. is seemingly endless.

I have been fit for all other clubs and at the very least, it provided confidence that I have tools in my bag that can get the job done. Like @RickyBobby_PR said:

Let us know how the fitting goes, if you end up getting one!

I am kind of torn.  I have done indoor and outdoor fittings and I think with wedges technique trumps fitting.  My wedge play is probably the worst aspect of my game and I use very basic approaches when using wedges.  Because of this I don't open them, play toe or heel down, or other techniques;  I am pretty much square face and leverage the swing to control spin and trajectory.

During my indoor fitting, the fitter pretty much said my wedge play wasn't good enough to do a detailed fitting.  During the outdoor fitting we tried different lies, but honestly I saw little difference between the various bounces and grinds except for those on the extreme edges.   The most beneficial change to my wedges was going away from the heavy stock steel shaft and putting in a lighter weight graphite shaft to be a better transition from my irons to wedges.

When doing most wanted testing,  it is obvious that all wedges perform differently: some go left, some right, some a little longer, some a little shorter, and vary in spin.

Based on this, for me it is more important to find a wedge that has the right gapping to help me hit specific distances and until I learn/acquire better technique fitting for bounce and grind probably provides little benefit.

Haven’t done a fitting (for any club…I know, it’s terrible!), but did the Vokey online fitting.  It was basically a self-assessment of your usage/swing/preference and it would spit out grinds for you.

Used this to pick out my SM8s and have been very happy with them to date…but this doesn’t replace an actual fitting.

Why isn't that a fitting?   There are multiple types of fitting and you made some effort to try and determine what might work best for you.   I thing the bigger question is when someone says "fitting" what do they really mean?

Only reason I say it wasn’t a fitting is it doesn’t match what I would consider to be a true fitting.  Did not involve hitting any balls with someone checking soup /flight/contact/etc and making recommendations or changes to the setup.

While I think it was helpful as a starting point for the Vokeys, it was also based on what I answered for the questions.

Dont get me wrong, I used the input when purchasing my wedges and have been very satisfied.

DOUBLE THIS 👆👆as being understated…… While virtual fitting is better than just stumbling around lost in club world, nothing beats a live fitting. In my golf future for wedges, going on my past experience ; hitting  outside in different areas, turf levels and conditions , and bunkers will be  a must have.

My fitting was out doors and I hit off a mat with a flight scope, short grass, long grass and a couple out of a sand trap.
