Wedge lofts

I play mizunon jpx923 forged irons. 4-gw, I recently had all my irons adjusted front 2deg up to std lie, and while I had them adjust lofts a bit. Inwas not happy with the gapping between my 5 and 6 iron and wanted to fix the top end of my bag. So starting at

My iron set has a PW and AW which are 43⁰ and 47⁰ respectively. I also have TaylorMade MG3s at 52⁰, 56⁰ and 60⁰

Currently playing my PW from my G30 iron set which is 45* along with 3 Cleveland CBX Zipcore wedges 48*, 54*, 58*. Being a senior with a slower swing speed my yardages are PW-100, 48-80, 54-70, 58-60. My gap that hurts is 90 yards, choking down on the PW is not consistent, nor is trying to shorten/slow my swing. Attempting to push the 48* to 90 yards usually results in an ugly swing and chunked shot. All that being said, my best strategy is attempting to avoid that 90 years territory. I might add that moving to the Cleveland wedges last year really improved my short game immensely, great wedges that fit my swing well!

My bag now includes a 44-degree PW (part of my XXIO Black iron set), a 48-degree, 52-degree, 56-degree and a 60-degree.  The last four are all Cleveland RTX Zipcore, mid-bounce (10 degrees). I use every one of them, especially around the greens.  I tried many different brands over the years but find the Clevelands are the most reliable for me to hit consistently.  Ping Glide wedges work well for me also.

Wedge gapping is important to me in the pitching wedge, gap wedge, and sand wedge, but not really in the lob wedge since I don’t hit full swings with it. I treat the LW like it’s behind glass… for emergencies only!
I just replaced my SM7’s with SM10’s in 50, 54, 58 (love them btw) and I will soon have the 50 bent down to 49 to close the gap a tiny bit to the PW.

I play the PW (42.5) and GW (48) from my iron set (JPX 923) as I only hit full shots and chips with these 2 clubs (I'm an "old school" chipper around the green, and will chip with anything from my 8i through LW, dictated by combination of of lie and carry to the putting surface).

I currently play a Callaway Raw SW (54 W-grind 12) and LW (60 Z-grind 8). I hit full shots with both, and partial shots primarily with the LW. Most of the bunkers I play are "firm" (i.e., not much sand in them and what is there is packed down), and I use the LW for these (very low effective bounce). I use the SW (higher bounce) for the bunkers that actually have sand in them. This combo gives me the versatility I need to get out of the bunkers I encounter. The low bounce of the LW is also better for any finesse shots I need to hit around the greens.

The gapping on full shots seems reasonable. My consistency is not absolute, but on a good day my full shot distances are GW: ~120, SW: ~105, LW: ~90.

For the last 10 years, I have changed the loft on my irons. I went from a 4° gap to a 5° gap. I have a 60° Cleveland tour wedge, a 56 to 55°, a 50°, my wedge is 45°, nine iron 40°, eight iron 35°, seven iron 30°, and six iron 26°.  Doing this has given me my 10 yard gaps back between the irons. Then I have a four hybrid. I also carry a 64° custom Vokey. That gives me five wedges. I find that I score better with wedges than I do with long irons or Woods.

My PW is 45, my next is a 52 Mizuno.  When it wears out, I will shorten the big 7 deg gap, probably get a 49 or 50 loft.  My sand is an old 56 / 12 Hogan Sure Out, I rarely use it outside the sand, and I have a Mizuno 60 if I have to go over sand up close.  But as Lee Trevino says, the 60 degree is HARD to get distance that I hope for.

Like @10Hockey I went through a Titleist Iron & Wedge fitting, it was great! 
My set was set up - 5i T350 - Nippon Modus3 Stiff
6i thru PW T200 -Nippon Modus3 Stiff
Wedges: Vokey SM10 - 48 degree F grind bent to 49 degrees to get the correct bounce
54 degree S grind 
58 degree M Grind 
All three with Wedge Flex shafts (Dynamic Gold S200).

Research how they came up with 14 and you will agree.  Its stupid

Nadal can carry 50 raquets to the court but only use one at a time.    Our group does not follow that rule and we dont care what the USGA thinks.

Edison 2.0 49 Degrees. This is really nice wedge, very forgiving and has lots of spin on full shots. Taylormade MG4 54 & 58 degree wedges. These are great wedges. Very versatile, and have gained 10 yards on full shots. Spin or run out seems to do whatever you want. I am very happy with my wedge set up - FINALLY!!!!!!!

I utilize the GW in my Mizuno Pro 223 irons. That loft is 49*. I then move onto a loft of 54* with 8* or bounce, followed by a 60* with 4* of bounce. I like having two various bounces in wedges. The bunkers at my course are quite firm at times. (36 holes and two style of bunkers). The lower bounce wedge allows for versatility depending upon course conditions. Distance gapping works well between all clubs as well.

My set PW is 46* (about 128 yds full but controlled swing), and I use 50* (117 yds) ,54* (108 yds), and 58* Taylormade MG series wedges.  For me the PW is a full swing club, I chip with the 50 or the 54.  When I got those, I was prepared to get the lofts/lies tweaked to give me the flight and gaps that I need, but it turned out they were where I needed them right out of the box.  The 58 I use for specialty shots like short-side bunkers and little lobs and flops around the green.  I actually don't have a clue how far it would go with a full swing, that's not what it's for.  For anything inside 110, I prefer to use either the 50 or 54 with a less than full swing

Currently have in the bag the SM9 50, 54, & 58. I also have a SM9 62 but that one rarely sees bag time... My T100 set has a 46* PW and 4* spacing unil you get to the 27* 5-iron which is only 3* from the 30* 6-iron.

46, 52, 58.  Removed the 56 and 60, put in a 58 T grind. I can open it to 60 or close it down a touch and hit the lower 2-hop and bite shot. Added a 7-wood. I love it.

I'm currently playing 50, 54 and 58 Vokey wedges with differing bounces and grind plus and old raw face Cleveland 60 with super low bounce. I've opted for 4 wedges for more greenside control and sacrificed a 4 iron to keep to the standard 14 clubs.

My PW is 47° and goes a bit less that 150 yards. It's a wedge but mostly in name as I use it full shots mostly. Then I have a 52° that goes 135 to... well 5 yards maybe. It's my main approach club, that I do funk a lot, play high, low, short, long, spiny or flat. Then finally I have a 58° for bunkers and "speciality" shots around the greens, flops, spinners and the like.
I've never found myself not having enough options or a club that's missing... nor two clubs that do the same. Only little problem is the flags at 140 yards in front of the green. The 52° is going to be too short most of the time, and I don't like taking some off the PW... I often end up playing the wedge to 150, hoping that the long putt back to the flag wont be too bad. I've tried gripping short, swinging 90%, the lot. To no real positive results.

My approach shots, anything between 110-160 yds, is hands down my biggest weakness. Inside of 100 yds, I feel very comfortable. Currently used within that range with nice and slow half shots, I use my Pitching Wedge (just realized is only 44 degrees!), 52 degree Wedge, 56 degree Wedge, and 60 degree Wedge. 
I recently added the 56 degree to my bag, and I honestly have found myself using the 60 degree less and less since. I have also noticed some trouble between 80-100 yds, as I feel like my pitching wedge doesn’t get up as much and stop as much as I would hope. Probably is the low lofted pitching wedge I didn’t realize was only 44 degrees. I can send it 120-130yds on full shots, not the tightest dispersion, but it’ll go.

Definitely is an interesting topic here. Might have just created an excuse to buy another club now.

Average players do not need more than two wedges. Learn how hit three different shots with each. Low, medium and high. PW and a 54 degree.

Almost all my wedges are Zipcore RTX. Last year I bought a Mizuno S23 50 deg wedge that the jury is still out on. I have Zipcore from 48 - 60deg, all either mid or full bounce. My bag is usually 50, 54, 58. but for my trip to Ireland I am dropping the 50 to a 48 for a little more distance. Still not sure where my swing will be after coming off of back fusion surgery. I really love my 58 full, one of my most consistent clubs. I used to use the 60 but wanted a little more distance so went to 58 and never looked back. I use the 58 as my main bunker wedge as well.

But then I have a 6 degree gap between my 46 and 52. Also having trouble wanting to drop the 48 is because I love the way it feels and I’ve got really good with it. Wondering if anyone else has had a similar dilemma and what you did about it?

I have 5 wedges: PW (45), G (50), 56, 60, 64.  Lots of people would say you shouldn't even carry a 64. I only carry 14 clubs. Don't carry a 5 iron and don't miss it. I like to feel as comfortable as possible with my scoring clubs and this works for me.  If you are sticking to the 14 club max rule or have more than 14 clubs, play for fun and don't care, leave it alone. Golf for most players is you against the course. My opinion and all other but yours shouldn't hold a ton of weight. If you are playing in events where the 14 club limit cimes into play, that is a different discussion and consistent gapping (tends) to improve scoring as does playing the same wedge model but wedges are ultimately about feel and confidence IMO.

I can manipulate my wedges somewhat, but i use all my wedges for different shots.
