Reg Flex vs Stiff Flex

Recommended Posts

I recently broke a regular flex graphite shaft on my Tommy Armour 845 8 iron and just for the heck of it, I broke out my stiff steel shaft Taylormade 8 iron and couldn’t believe how well I hit it.

At what swing speed should you consider stiffer shafts?

For my PW my swing speed was 78mph.

I had a Callaway fitting and they recommended

TT HZRDUS GEN 4 SILVER 65 HB/IR.

There's more to it than just swing speed and not every stiff and regular flex are the same. A light weight stiff flex can be more flexible than a heavy regular flex. Of course shaft characteristics will play a role as well. Someone with a slower swing speed but an aggressive transition might need a stiff flex compared to someone with a faster swing speed but smoother transition (tempo). Getting fit will be the best way to, there's too many options now and you can spend a lot of money, time and frustration if you're guessing.

I swing 105-115 with driver depending on how loose I am and and whether or not I go after it. I have successfully used regular to x stiff. There isn’t an industry standard for flex so consider those just suggestions lol.

The key is to find a shaft that allows you to make center contact the most.

on a side note, how did you like the Hzrdus Gen4 iron shafts?

@Bill Howard the statement above along with what you are wanting to see out of your shot is the biggest part of it.

My srixons have reg iron shafts in them and the PXG irons I'm testing have stiff graphite shafts that are way lighter than the iron shafts.  With no standard it's hard to say what would work best for your swing.  I know everyone will say a fitting is key, (which it is) but it's not available for everyone all the time.  Do you have any launch monitor numbers that you could post?  Maybe someone could suggest off of that....

It was so long ago, and I wasn't hitting it that great, but I did seem to see an increase in distance, but that have been the stronger loft on the irons.

I think of this block of text from Jack Nicklaus’ “Golf My Way” (Chapter 7) when it comes to considering equipment choices, shaft flex included. It definitely impacted my thought process.

There are a number of videos online - Rick Shiels has a great one that shows has very little affect. Kick point can but if your happy with your ball flight and feel then why change.
