Popular Post bens197
I’ve written on several posts that I’ve been interested in building a new set of irons this season. As it’s progressed, I pulled the trigger last week and went with a 4-GW setup with Nippon Modus 3 120 shafts in a stiff flex. The trial period was with the 7 iron and it’s been consistently positive. I’ve tried hitting a variety of shots in several different conditions. Wind, no wind, rain, cold and sun. The trial period was very successful and as a result, these are my new irons. I am well aware that Maltby irons are not wetting the whistle of every golfer. I’ll be blunt and say, you’re not my audience. This was a very fun project and the heads are complemented by ferrules from BB&F Co. The ferrules arrived in a drawstring pouch which was cool. Above all, quality of the product is fantastic. At approximately $3-$4/each, it doesn’t break the bank to add a nice touch. Here are some photos of the set and as the season progresses, I’ll be able to add to this thread. If you’re interested in a players distance club that you can build yourself, I am here to answer whatever questions you have. fozcycle, PMookie, fixyurdivot and 15 others 13 5 Quote PING G400 LST Mitsubishi Tensei White 60X TaylorMade SIM2 3 wood Fujilkura Ventus Blue 7-X Titleist U505 2 Tensei 1K Black 85 X Titleist T100 4-P Nippon Modus 3 120X PING S159 50-S 55-H 59-T DG X100 L.A.B. PlaidJacket
From what I can see in your photos I like them. Your build looks great too. I'm not the least off-put by your irons or Maltby. I play Wishon and most people don't have a clue about Wishon clubs let along who Tom Wishon is. So, it your or my clubs aren't on tour or in golf magazines they're invisible to most. Further, most golfers (probably aside from MGS forum members) think they are El Cheapo or clone clubs and such. I'm curious what your cost per club was? IYDM. Just components. I don’t mind you asking. $101 (rounded up) before tax per club. Golfworks did offer a promotion on shipping which was going to be $32 with a 7-10 day estimate. Order was placed Wednesday AM and arrived Friday at 8:48AM. Wishon and KZG among others, have a dedicated following in the builder’s world. I have not played Wishon irons but I have no reason to believe they are anything but great from testimonials that I’ve read. They will be a conversation starter for sure. Waiting on the new Maltby wedges and am tempted to pick up a driver . They have me hook, line and sinker. TS2’s look great. I hope you enjoy...I took the Gap out today behind my parents’ home. They live next to a course that closed three years ago and became a park. The holes still exist (albeit rough shape which is fine) so I hit some shots today while running my dog to get some early yardage estimates. And just a heads up...The comments in the TSW Wedge review say they drop tomorrow (week of 23rd) rather than the “back ordered until April” comments on the page. If that’s the case I’ll likely add a 54* to gap my setup a little better than where I am right now. azstu324
You guys have probably seen me post in other threads so sorry for the repeat. Many people in underground component golf brand world don't realize that Wishon was an apprentice of Ralph Maltby back in the 80's. Wishon then went on to run Dynacraft. And eventually broke off to start Wishon Golf. Wishon was also a drummer for the Steve Miller band! These are some really nice looking irons! Can't wait for the release of the TSW wedges. Wish Lamkin had some Arccos crossover with embedded grips so I could get those on the Pings, but will be interested to get tour opinions.I really wanted a ribbed grip. The early reports said the Calibrate was more pronounced than GP Align technology. Last season I had switched to the Lamkin Sonar from GP Tour Wrap 2G. Golfworks had a promotion for a free grip and I really loved how it felt. It was a good match for me as I prefer to not wear a glove and it was really tacky. So here we are today, a blend of the wrap style that I like with Sonar texture and a rib. I won’t call it the Holy Triumverate as that is reserved for Rush; all in all, a combination that really works well for me. Most don't even know the difference between "Made for" and custom/aftermarket. It would be cool to see Maltby as a golf club company create more of a defined separation from Golfworks. Not saying that they need to be separate companies but maybe just have its own separate web site with the only club packs and maybe a couple paired shaft/grip options based on price or optimal pairings. Golfworks recently changed their site (and based on the feedback in their forums, to some dismay) and removed the "premium" pack options and instead now have just their basic packs with the TT Score steel or Maltby MPF graphite shafts. If you want anything different, you are directed to their custom shop. EDIT: I see they've now added some other options back to their packs. For reference, the TS1 standard pack with the Score shafts is $450. Unreal deal for the quality. If MGS would test these, I would guess the best way to test would be to use the Score shafts. I am slightly surprised that Golfworks/Maltby hasn't jumped on getting into MGS testing already. @bens197 Did you just size the ferrules with acetone? Not saying that they need to be separate companies but maybe just have its own separate web site with the only club packs and maybe a couple paired shaft/grip options based on price or optimal pairings. And then if one wanted to choose the "custom shop" option, they could be directed to Golfworks. It would be great to have some a separate site for just their clubs and take an approach similar to Jason Hiland did with Sub 70 and Hurricane/Diamond Tour Golf. Obviously Sub 70 isn't offered on those sites. This could be a fantastic product to get in peoples hands and market it. Also I read on the forums that they actually had a deal with Golf Galaxy and were going to stock some of their product for fittings but once Dick's bought Golf Galaxy that all fell through. 24 minutes ago, edingc said: Golfworks recently changed their site (and based on the feedback in their forums, to some dismay) and removed the "premium" pack options and instead now have just their basic packs with the TT Score steel or Maltby MPF graphite shafts. If you want anything different, you are directed to their custom shop. I think they put the premium paks back up at least for the short term. I saw they disappeared a few weeks back but they are back up now at least TS-1 Paks bens197 1 Quote Driver: Ben Hogan GS53 4W: Maltby KE4 2i: Maltby KE4 FDI 4-PW: Maltby TS-1 - C-Taper 120g 50,54,58: Maltby TSW Putter: L.A.B. bens197
I am slightly surprised that Golfworks/Maltby hasn't jumped on getting into MGS testing already. bens197 Did you just size the ferrules with acetone? I still have not found a process I'm in love with. Finding a truly lint-free cloth is harder than I imagined.I used painters tape around the hosel and shaft and sanded down with fine grit sandpaper. When I felt that the ferrule was close, I used acetone to finish it off. There are several ways to do it, this worked well for me. edingc, Rickp and pozzit 3 Quote PING G400 LST Mitsubishi Tensei White 60X TaylorMade SIM2 3 wood Fujilkura Ventus Blue 7-X Titleist U505 2 Tensei 1K Black 85 X Titleist T100 4-P Nippon Modus 3 120X PING S159 50-S 55-H 59-T DG X100 L.A.B. bens197
Yesterday I had the chance to play several holes into a 20mph headwind (according to accuweather) for 9 holes. I want to say that I’m beyond the honeymoon period and frankly, this style of iron is brilliantly engineered. I played the ball down and was hitting 6 irons out of the rough with solid contact. Slight misses maintain their trajectory and path far better than any other style or design I’ve ever played. Far better than a perimeter weighted cast or a forged cavity. They’re small enough to minimize friction through rough and large enough to offer forgiveness on poor contact. I am not saying these specific irons are the sword in the stone. I am saying if you haven’t tried a player’s distance iron, give them a shot. This is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. pozzit, ncwoz, Rickp and 1 other 4 Quote PING G400 LST Mitsubishi Tensei White 60X TaylorMade SIM2 3 wood Fujilkura Ventus Blue 7-X Titleist U505 2 Tensei 1K Black 85 X Titleist T100 4-P Nippon Modus 3 120X PING S159 50-S 55-H 59-T DG X100 L.A.B.
