2021 Official Review-Tommy Armour Impact No. 3 Putters

Before you make any adjustments to the lie angle, try holding it differently.  I like use ulnar deviation to help get the putter flat on the ground, and a good side effect of this is that it helps take my hands/wrist out of the putting stroke.

I took a few pictures of this with my old putter as an example image.png.667dfec472172f0372ae94c625888d53.png

But also found this article about it which should be helpful

https://golf.com/instruction/putting/ulnar-deviation-putting-stroke-fix-jankowski/

How 'ulnar deviation' can stabilize your wrists and improve your putting

So this does seem to work with the #2. I had much greater success on the putting green yesterday. Still needs work but this was a great tip.

Played a really wet 18 today and really struggled with distance control. The putting green was way slower than the regular greens. As well, my green reading was atrocious. One other thing, which will help, I hit the face center so much more, leading to more powerful putts. Need to grind more. This is more me than the putter

Been busy lately so I haven't been able to get out and play as much as I am normally accustomed but I've got an afternoon 18 scheduled for today. Will report back tomorrow.

I havent been Arccos'sing as much as I should.  But today felt better than normal with the putter.  Got one birdie putt to drop and got a few 6-7 footers to drop after overshooting the longer putts.  One hole on my course has a mapping issue, so I can't edit it if Arccos doesnt track it perfectly.  But here goes:

I also holed a putt up a steep front from off-green.  I dropped a 10 footer for birdie on a long par 5. I hit the pin on a 50' from off green but it settled 10' away.  I feel like I'm gaining control, getting accustomed to the weight, and the face is definitely flatter.  Mishits are seldom now, so now its just getting the speed and roll dialed. 🙂

I have been following along, but can't remember specifically if anyone has really mentioned this. Are you playing mainly the same course or are you trying to get to different courses to see how the putter and your stroke reacts to different greens and conditions you may not be as comfortable to?

I don’t like to play the same course over and over so indirectly yes. It actually is quite remarkable the differences between courses. Good question!

so did some Elmo putting today and my ball seemed all over the place. Then tried my other two face balanced putters and same thing. Moral of the story, the Indian needs to learn how to roll his arrow better.

Going off the last question is there a green type you prefer or feel the putter is better suited towards?

For the Strokelab i certainly preferred greens medium to slow and felt I had better control. On really quick greens the insert/club just didn't quite as well. Still made plenty of putts but my confidence was higher on the medium to slower greens. Wondering if these have any similar characteristics or may be more suited towards faster greens?

To me it depends. When my face control was poor I didn’t mind fast greens. Yesterday was an issue, although my brain was playing tricks on me since I was playing in pouring rain that the greens shouldn’t be that fast. With that, I did have some decent lag putts still yesterday on a fast green and nearly holed a 45 ft birdie. Three rounds prior were also fast and I didn’t have many issues. My preference is to stick with one stick if possible, although you may be onto something with shafts. My LV Toulon has a stroke lab and it was great on fast greens needing tough. Slow greens forget about it.

I played both, my normal course and a new course, and to be fair, the greens on my home course were significantly harder than the different course I played.

Overall my putting has been much better, maybe is the putter, or the fact that I've been practicing around the house a lot more as of late.

That is a great question.

I felt that once I got a little bit of feel for the putter, that independently of the green speeds, I could make the closer putts and lag the longer ones with a good deal of consistency.

That being said 90% of the greens I play are slow to medium speeds.

For the couple faster greens on my normal course, I felt that the weight and balance of the putter head, allowed me to have some good control, and I never felt like I would end up blowing pass the hole by more than a couple of feet.

As far as confidence goes, I should say I'm confident on every putt I take, but I definitely respect the fast greens a lot more, but that is me, not the putter.

Ive played my course and 2 others.  The greens at my course are very fast and very difficult.  Adapting to the other courses has been just as difficult.   In a nutshell, what I really need to do is hit the practice green of wherever I play for at least 15-20 minutes just to get the speeds dialed.

Back to my Elmo drill and using my rug with lines as alignment I couldn’t miss. Toe hits, heel hits, center, all hit the Elmo or just barely short from almost 8ft. Starting to fall back in love. Hoping to get on the course one or two more times before my review

Good news is I can still likely putt.  Ill spend some time on the practice greens and wrap this up.  🙂

I have played a bigger variety of courses than I normally do over the last month, though I usually play on fast bermuda greens.  Our greens that are normally in the 10-11 range have been in the 8-9 range to help them heal up from the Texas freeze this spring.  I played 1 round on medium speed bent, and a couple rounds are really slow bermuda.  Will expound more on how it worked out in the review.

I was given the opportunity of testing the TA Impact II, the slightly larger blade putter.  I may be less inclined to make a big deal of appearance. After all, most of my current clubs were used. I tend to consider condition and suitability for my game more than original look. Still, this club looked good.  Blade and shaft were black, as well as the grip.  Alignments were clearly marked. In short, I give this this weapon a full 10 points in looks  and style.

As with any new club in my bag, it was going to take a while to get used to the feel of this putter. My gamer has a sound I am very used to, after 5 years of use. The TA sound was, to my ear, a tad softer. More like tapping on a full pot of water as opposed to any empty one. This implies as well that I spend a lot of time listening to my putter.  I really do not, though I have many do.  Not listening for sound may sound a bit off to many who are aware I was a conductor of orchestras and choirs as well as a classical singer. I respond more to the tactile when golfing. The TA did not produce any real distraction for me through sound no matter where on the face I struck the ball.

In terms of the basic feel of the club, I spent a lot of time hitting and mis-hitting the blade in first day I tested it out. The feel of the Impact II was disorienting at the start.  The basic sense was that it was heavier than my gamer and oddly balanced. This took a full three weeks of use to get to a sense of “I know this club and what I want to do”.  I even spent an hour with a golf pro to see if I may need to radically change any of my putting the stroke. We ended up focusing more with stance and body straightening than anything else. Soon the TA felt better in terms of balance and I was not having the same impression of clunky, heavy and awkward. So, for these considerations I’ll assign a solid 8 points.

As I spent time on the course and putting mat, I became quite a bit more accurate in all the fundamental aspect of using this putter, except repeatable accuracy of distance greater than 20’ mainly to operator error.  I was able to readily aim the ball using within the markings on the club.

The nice aspect of the club is it sent the ball in the direction I hit it, good or bad. All was solid with my stroke after I adapted to the club. I did have to change the stance to allow to keep more of the blade on the ground, lest I hit on the heel.

I am far from 100% comfortable with the TA II. If this had been my choice for a putter when I rebuilt my set in 2014 I could see it as a gamer. I will continue to mix it in from time to time when the heat of Phoenix allows me to play again. Usability I would give 16 points. While it fits my game, still not a perfect natural one.

Total Points 34 out of 40.

One last comment: the price point makes this at great choice for many of us.
