Best “cheap” wedge sets

Sub70's 286 & JB Forged wedges are $105 with stock shafts, with a ton of additional shaft options. Plus it comes in Satin, Raw, and Black. Tons of degree options as well. Best company you can work with in the golf industry, hands down. I play their woods, hybrids, wedges, and putter. Love dealing with them and will continue to do so.

Pre-owned is another great option. I've gotten a hybrid, 5 wood, wedges, and irons from them pre-owned. In multiple cases, their "excellent" condition has come still in the wrapper. They had a set of irons I bought "excellent" and one of the irons was NOT that condition. They paid for me to send it back, they replaced the head with a new one, and then sent it back. That's what Sub70 is and why I'll always look to them first.

I recently bought a volkey titleist wedge for around 180 just for the 56 and I love it but I also found a 60 and 52 Cleveland wedge for 100 total and almost brand new on Facebook.  They feel extremely good and pretty similar to my titleist.

Titleist 913 driver and 3 wood, Stealth 2 plus 4h, dci irons, titleist volkey 56 degree, Cleveland 60, and 52 degree. And last I have my Taylormade spider putter.

I almost only buy my clubs at Callaway Pre-owned now.  I'm not that good to justify new club expenses.  However, pre-owned does a great job exceeding my expectations every time.  I purchased my last set there and they came in looking just like new.

Callaway GBB Epic, Callaway Razr X Black 3W, Callaway X14 Pro, Cleveland CG15, Odyssey White Hot #5

One of the most underrated wedges from before the pandemic was the TaylorMade Milled Grind.  If you werent going to take a grinder or a whetstone to them, they were still going to let you go hands high or hands low and they glide through turf really nicely.  I've seen the 52 and 56 used go for around 50 bucks in a fair Auction on Ebay and 2nd Swing would probably have thenm in a set.  Second swing is not my favorite retailer but that would be one stop shopping option.  The Ping Glide two generations old (I think it's 2.0) goes pretty cheaply on Amazon.  That is a well designed wedge.  Maybe the best of it's release year when you cut through the Vokey propaganda.  If your pro is a decent guy, you might explain your problem to him.  He may somebody who jsut bought wedges and is looking to move the old set.

Hope this is helpful.  All I got.  Fairways and Greens, brother.

Another option is buying just a set of new heads.  Your shaft and grip is probably still good on your wedges.

Haywood sells wedge heads for C$95 for raw or chrome.  Hard to beat that price.  I really like the 56-12 wedge.  It’s predictable and has great spin, even in the rain.

I wish more companies just offered the heads.

See if you can find the (Costco) Kirkland wedges. They get mostly very good reviews. I've seen them in the stores and they look good too. If I remember correctly they were priced at around $150 for all three in the set.

I’m going to be boring and say……

learn to hit a knock down wedge, always a good shot to learn.
buy decent pre-owned, you can get some almost new previous models that will perform better than cheap makes and remember to reshaft to match your irons

My wedges are 48,52,56 and 60 degrees and 2-4 times per round I am between clubs. It usually is between my 52 which I hit 115-120 yards and my 56 which I hit 85-98 yards. Rather than adding a fifth wedge (which would be ridiculous) I’ve learned to either choke down, play the ball further back/forward in my stance or open the face slightly.
If you’re looking to add an inexpensive wedge CallawayPre owned, 2ND SWING and EBAY are all good options. But…I would ask for close up pictures of the grooves before buying and make sure that the club is returnable if the photos of the grooves don’t match the clubs grooves when you get it.

It seems to me that one of the greatest challenges you may be facing could be the 48/52/56 loft set up without possibly spending a little more. Not sure whether you have already made your decision but if you are determined to replace all three wedges at the same time spending less than $100 per club, you may have and easier time switching to a 52/56/60 setup. Good quality, highly rated sets at that lower price point appear to be more widely available, especially if you are not fixated on it being one of the major retail golf brands. For instance, as others have suggested there are a number of lesser-known brands that have seemingly solid reviews but only at the 52/56/60 setup option (e.g. Lazrus, Gigagolf, even Kirkland has good feedback). Lazrus currently sells a 3-wedge set for $127; Gigagolf single wedges at the 52/56/60 loft options are available for $40-50 per wedge and customization of certain components for additional fees; Costco has been offering their set for $169 if you are still able to get those somewhere. Each of those have several reviews and even feedback from recognized golf influencers (e.g. Rick Shiels, etc.) if you do a google search.

I have also scored some great deals on some quality options for under $100 per club when companies drop prices to make room for new releases (e.g. New Level, Sub70, even some of the biggest names if you keep your eye out), and a wider variety of lofts being available including your aforementioned 48 or 58, etc.

Beyond that, as others have suggested you may need to explore bending clubs or looking at used options (I just tend to be gun shy about pulling the trigger on used options at the risk of being too worn. In my experience, wedges tend to be the main clubs needing to be replaced most frequently due to wear.

Good luck!

I would look at the Powerbilt wedge set SX201, usually 52/56/60 for an unbelievable price…..several golf shops have them online such as Amazon for $76.99.

I will echo using Callaway Preowned, and of course, ebay.  I am a Mizuno fan, you can find used Mizuno wedges, just look at the pix closely to get some grooves left, not all worn out.  Do some legwork, er, I mean finger work, here on the internet.

#1  PXG 0211 10.5 deg, Evnflo Riptide CB 40 gram A flex.

3W: Callaway Steelhead Xr,  Tensei Blue CK 55 gram A flex.

Driving Iron: Mizuno MP 18 MMC Fli-Hi 3i 18 degree, Recoil 95 reg flex.

4 iron:  GFF Mizuno Fly-Hi, 24 degree forged hollow body,  Aerotech Steelfiber 😍😃💥.

5 Hybrid: Mizuno (2017) JPX Fli-Hi wave tech, Recoil ESX 460 reg flex.

Irons: 6 - PW: Ping I 500, on Recoil Smacwrap ES 760, reg flex.

Wedges: 2 x Mizuno S5 52/09.  1@ 50 deg, 1@ 54 deg; New (July 2024) Mizu ES 21, 58 x 08, jet black.

The easiest solution is to have someone bend the 52 degree wedge you already have down to 50 degrees, then bend your other wedges equal distant degrees of loft apart. Typically 5 to 6 degrees. Most wedges are soft steel and can be bent +/- 3 degrees in loft and lie. If they're a cast 431 stainless then you're limited to about  +/- 2 degrees. That'll cost you a total of about 5 bucks a club. Making your 52 a 50 should render the 10 yds. you need.

Here's an option:  https://www.amazon.com/Taylormade-Approach-Wedge-Steel-Stiff/dp/B09BTX32VV

I would definitely try to find a matching gap wedge for your set (that Amazon one looks new,but check 2nd swing, global golf etc), and would then take a SERIOUS look at the Kirkland v2 wedges (52, 56 and 60).  They are spectacular, I've had both generations and gen 2 has a much better sole grind (which was my beef about gen 1).  I was replacing my SM7s with these and honestly haven't looked back.

Now to answer the question about lofts ... I have the Wilson D9 forged through gap wedge (50), and the Kirkies start at 52.  The Wilson has a different shaft and a totally different flight (flatter and spins less).  So I find I can cover 115-125 with the Wilson, where the Kirkie 52 with the wedge shaft tops out at 110 for me, so pretty decent gapping.  Also be careful about bending wedges strong ... you will lose bounce and some of the leading edge relief, so if you're a steeper swinger that won't be ideal.

For a little Friday humor, people ask me why I have 2 "G" wedges, and I tell them the set matching G is George Washington, and the Kirkland G is ... George Jefferson

image.png.2affc5236aec5b3132e902c604ce6e9a.png

And of course the Kirkland L wedge is Weezy.  Haven't named the S yet ... Thoughts?  🤣
