How many wedges do you carry?

Recommended Posts

Giving to give 5 a try. Standard P 43, G 48, S 54, L58.

Going to insert a 52 right in the middle and bend the 54 to 55.   I’m doing this to fill a gap 105-110 range. Playing it is a stock swing.  I find myself toooften stuck between a 95 yard shot w the S and 120 w the G.  Fill find out this weekend if it’s the right call - four rounds at the prairie club.

Pulling a 7 wood out.  My new hybrid will suffice.

5 tool wedge guy. PW (44°), GW (50°), SW (56°), LW (60°), 64°. Rarely play a round where I don't use all 5. Other clubs are 7.5° driver, 14.5° 3W, 19.5° and 23° hybrids, 6-9 irons. Replaced the 5 iron with tbe 64° this year. Don't miss it. Gripped  down 23° has better height, spin and accuracy for holding greens. 5 iron was becoming a punchout only club. Rather have another scoring club in the bag.

how often do you use the 64, and what kind of use, distance, full or partial swing?

Guessing I have replied in this thread already, but 4. 58 and 54 then gap and pitch.

I like this setup overall and offers me a great variety of options all around the course.

Don't see myself changing anytime soon!

I have 3 and 1 PW currently and I can’t imagine adding more.  Need more flexibility on the top end of my bag for proper gapping.

Thinking I may replace my PW with another Vokey.

It is round dependent and comes down to the type of shot I need to hit.  Full swing distance is about 75 yds.  I first got it to play a more squared stance on short-sided chip shots but it is now fully incorporated into my bag. My PW is probably used the least. The 50, 56, 60 and 64 all see pretty equal use. I am fortunate to still be pretty long off the tee at 50 years old so get to hit a lot with the scoring clubs. The 56 was my first wedge addition beyound the PW 35 years ago. 60 was next, then the 50 and now the 64. Each time I added I was able to hit the shots I need with the others but looked to do so as perfectly and consistently as possible. Since the 5 iron was mostly gsthering dust I had room to add it. I prefer a choked down 80ish percent 23° hybrid to the 5 iron. Better control, accuracy, height and spin to hold the green.

If you can, borrow one from a friend for a range session. The 64 is definitely not for everyone. My 56, 60 and 64 are all low bounce as well which I hear all the time is not ideal for most players but it is my ideal setup so I know a lot of what I have laid out could make things worse if you already struggle with wedges.

Hope this helps though!

I have a 45* Edison 1.0 wedge as my PW. My Mizuno set came with a 46* PW, but I prefer the Edison.

The rest of my setup are 3 Vokey wedges: 50.08F / 55.10F (56 bent to 55) / 60.08M.

I have a full set of Cobra LTDX Irons

PW-41.5, GW-47.5, SW-54, then a Vokey 60.

I like the PW, GW due to the forgiveness of of then but the SW can go. For some odd reason I’ve always had the ability to flop of move the wedges pretty well but with the cavity back of the SW it doesn’t allow for any play.

Been playing for about 2 years in total. Winter breaks and a 6month period when I got sick. Starting to feel like myself again and recently played a “okay” round.
I currently have custom fit Cobra LTDx irons/wedges, a Vokey 60(cause my short game has been the best part of my game, and a Maverick 9 deg. Driver. Driving is the worst part of my game so My 4 iron usually takes alot of the long game abuse.

I carry four wedges.  My PW, then a 50, 54, and 58.  I do it for the spacing and distances.  I think you need to be comfortable with what you have.  I have switched over the years and had a PW, 52, 56, and 60 and honestly, I think I would like to go back to that setup.

In my opinion, if you switch lofts often, then it is hard to maintain distances.  I think it is better to get a feel with a set and learn the distances with those lofts and go from there instead of switching in and out for lofts...

That is my opinion.
