vandyland
Finally listened to the NLU podcast and I found it interesting as well. Part of me always distrusts Sean Foley a little bit because he seems to big on "soft" skills and holistic approaches but he convinced me in this interview that he is very committed to continuing to learn and develop. The one thing that he said that distressed me @GolfSpy_APH was about how neural pathways are hardwired and under pressure we revert back to our original movement pattern or swing. As someone who HATES their original movement pattern and swing and is constantly fighting to undo what I started with that it is concerning and I want to REJECT that. But I think the truth is that any "swing change" has to be thought about in terms of months/years and that you will always fight your original moves. But I think the truth is that any "swing change" has to be thought about in terms of months/years and that you will always fight your original moves. This is true in any movement pattern change we try to make, whether it’s a golf swing, throwing motion, walking, fixing bad form on different exercises. Before getting distracted with my side gig and some other stuff as part of my continuing education as a personal trainer I was studying for my corrective exercise certification. That training is about analyzing and fixing bad movement patterns. To fix someone’s form or to get them to perform exercises that correct an imbalance or other issue they have physically the person needs to start with slow controlled movements at light weights or body weight and higher reps. As they learn the pattern weight and/or reps are increased. It takes 8-12 weeks to start to change a movement pattern. And yes when it comes to under pressure our bodies will revert to what they know it’s commonly referred to as muscle memory but what it really is, is the neuro patterns our brains recall and send the signals down the chain. Yes it takes a long time to make changes permanent, but there should be visible changes as one progresses assuming they aren’t trying to make the change at full speed. We can look at Justin rose as an example. It was 11 years of working in the same feel before it clicked. Now over those 11 years he made improvements in what he was trying to do but it wasn’t until that point it was “natural” Tiger is another example. For him it was 18-24 months of a swing change before he felt comfortable with it on the course.
