48*, 53*, 58* Wedge set up

Anyone using this set up for their wedges? Haven't run into anyone using the same system. But definitely found it more versatile than i originally thought it would be.

Decided to dump the set GW when I switched irons (Zx5 mkII) in spring. But with stronger lofts and set GW being 47-50* now and PW being sub 45*. My gaps were to big and I i wanted a lower lofted wedge to use around the green since I dont use my set PW for chip shots.

Mine wedge set up is Pw-45*, Gw-49*, Sw-54*, Lw-58*.

But it's mainly cause when I got Arccos, the stats showed that I never used the 60* (2 shots in 20+ rounds).  So I swithed LW to 58* which was too similar to SW 56*.  That became SW 54*. The GW is always my 100 yard club, so after a couple simulator sessions, I had it bent to 49* to get a consistant 100 carry.

48, 54, 58 for me. The 48 is a 2021 T200 gap wedge, 54 is a Vokey SM8 54 S, and, the 58 is a SM5 K.

I have a 52F SM6, but, it seemed a bit close to my 48, so, I went with a 54, which, I find to quite versatile around the green.

I have this exact set up. It fits all my needs. I only have a Driver and 5 wood so I actually have two 58s (1 low bounce, 1 high bounce) for versatility.

Driver: PXG 0311 Gen4 9* playing 10.5*  at 45in, weight in heel, HZRD Smoke yellow 70x

5 Wood: PXG 0211 (2021) 18* playing at 42in, AV Raw White 75x

4 iron: Mizuno HM Pro playing 21* with PX LZ 6.5

5-GW: PXG 0211 (2021) with PX LZ 6.5

53 Degree: CBX Gen1 with DG S400

58 Degree: New Level forged DG S300 9*of bounce (tight lies/hard surface)

58 Degree: Mizuno T22 16* of bounce (Soft condition/thick rough)

Met a guy who only carried 1 FW and 2 lob wedges as well for the same reason. One low bounce the other high bounce.

I’m actually testing out new wedges right now I have mizuno jpx923 hot metal my Gap wedge is a 48 the logic would be 52-56-60 but I feel like that’s to many wedges 😅 gonna have to try a 53/58 combo

I’m currently sitting without a LW in my bag and not sure if I would put one back in. PW - 44°, GW - 49°, SW - 54°. I had a 60° in for quite a while but very rarely used it. Probably less than two swings in a ten round stint would be my guess. Maybe a 58° would be more useful to me.

Was thinking about this thread earlier when I was doing some swings and getting some gapping data.

I like where my irons are at (t100 PW and gw) at 46 and 50 both bend 1 strong to 45 and 49 for help with the t150 gapping.

However it's left the 54 58 a little awkward.

I have a set of 52,56,60 which in trying and so far really like. I think I may go to 53,57,61 for my 4 degree gaps and just a little extra bounce.

It would be unconventional, but hey it could work brilliantly!

I’m closer to doing that than not while running with 46 - 50 - 54 - 60

I’d love to ditch the SW and just go gap / lob but it would look more like 46 - 53 - 59

I use the GW more than any other club during a round so as long as I can get that one right, anything is possible.

When I was playing my Gen 1 Edison wedges, the lofts were 44*, 48* (bent from 49*), 54* and 59*. That setup worked well for me, and the shortest iron from my set that I was carrying was a 39* Tour Edge Exotics C721 9-iron.

I am surprised so many people ditched their 60 but to be fair, I do not have a 58. I have a 47, 52 and 60. I like the setup personally. The 60 is such a spoon, it has launched over more bunkers than I'd like to admit.

I refuse to play anything higher than 56º. I personally would rather open up my 56º to flop if I need height vs. trying to hit a 60º. IMO, a lot of amateurs make the mistake of thinking they need a 58º or 60º. And then are super uncomfortable actually hitting it because of the amount of loft.

Everyone's different.  I would never open up my 54º sand wedge with 14º of bounce, and my 60º is my favorite wedge in my bag... use it for most any shot around the green.

Edit:  my pitching wedge is 48º.

I just found that a 60 got me into more trouble than out of trouble, (carried a 60 for a long time).  I was more likely to make chunks and duffs with the 60.  And I really don't use the 58 all that much, but I feel more comfortable with it when I do.

Yes, agreed, that is my experience.  At some point I may bend the 53 back to the original 52 and stick with 44, 48, 52 & 56 (4 degree gaps).  But with my skill, 5 degree may be better.

I refused to use a 60 but only had a56* in the bag. But inwould open it up more than half the time. So i just went to the 58* and play it square. Only needed to open it 2 or 3 times ever. But my GW was my most used club outside of the bunker so i just split the difference really between my 50 and 56, 53. And my 56 and a 60, 58. Or a Sap and Slob wedge as i jokingly call them. The 5 * gap works perfect since i play my wedges all the same length.

I was that way for years. I only carried a 56* for the longest time until i made this change in the spring. Butch Harmon said it, amateurs shouldnt use anything over 58. Since I opened my 56* to essentially 58* I decided to switch and now just play the 58* pretty square. But i could open it up if needed which is rare.

With stronger lofted irons and some sets having 2 gap wedges the need/space for a 60 is diminished. The versatility of wedges allow you to do so much more. I play full face wedges in my 53 and 58. They look like shovels that can scoop anything.
