Sunglasses! What do you wear on and off the course?

Recommended Posts

I play normally with Bliz Fusion sunglasses. Originally they are probably meant for cross-country skiing but are working really well also on the golf course. The lense is rather wide and the frame of the sunglasses is not in your vision. Also optics are good enough. Compared to many other brands (Oakley etc.) also the price is really consumer-friendly

I started wearing a pair of the original Oakley sunglasses like the one on the bottom left of the display picture 20 yrs ago.  My intent was to decrease eye fatigue and headaches after 4-5 hours in the sun.  One of the best decisions I've made.  As one who hates to wear glasses the key is to get a very good pair like the Oakley's.  They don't slip, I can't see the frame below my eyes.  I've tried cheaper pairs and they don't come close to a pair of Oakley's.

One thing I will say is for those of you that go through lenses frequently, like I do with tiny humans getting their hands on my glasses, FUSE lenses are worth the investment. I started using them when I could no longer find the G30 Oakley lenses for my flak jackets. Both the prizm and pro versions are really nice and the customer service is outstanding!

Which FUSE lenses do you use on the course? I'm trying to figure out which AMP lens color is best for various ball colors, but am curious about your experience and lens color.

Dark brown prescriptions.  After next cataract surgery, Oakley Dark Prism the Bubba Watson advert from 6 yrs ago.  REKS are ok for less $.  You have to talk to the optician about golf in sun, shade, distance, close-up.  I asked my opthamolg to write my Rx for distance/golf.  I can't use them to read, but exclnt focus on the ball I'm trying to hit.  I had lasik years ago, was better than 20/20, but cataracts push me to 30 ish.

Right now I wear blublockers for day to day use, but I also have Oakley M frames from like 2002. I really need new lenses for them if I was going to wear them for golf. Curious if anyone knows if replacement lenses can be found anywhere. I haven’t had much luck. I have a hard time finding the right frame that will fit me and look good.

The OG M-frames are really hard to come by let alone replacement lens/parts. They are pretty sought after now though as some collections love them. You could always call Oakley directly to see if they have any lens in the vault or you can try some Oakley forums but the price will likely not be worth it and you could just get a new pair.

I was playing baseball at the time the Oakley phase hit the US in the 90's and had a coach that was also a coach for the LA Angels at the time so I became hooked really easily on Oakley which is why it is all I were.  My first few pairs were the M frames with the heater lenses that I can still remember Tony Gwynn wearing. I would guess I have somewhere north of 100 pairs that I have accumulated over the last 30 years but for golf I primarily wear the golf prizm lenses in either the normal or the dark lenses.  I did just pick up a pair that were retro to the original Razrs as I just couldn't help myself.  My wife says I am like 20 years to old to wear them.

My favorite pair are the David Duval signature M frames that get cracked out once or twice a year.

Tifosi Optics has a great line of sunglasses  covering golf, baseball, cycling. Huge variety of frames and lens options. All quality stuff and the upside is that they’re a hell of a lot less expensive than Oakley, Maui Jim, etc. I believe they also offer prescription lenses too.

I went to wide brimmed hats a few years ago for sun protection, and am finally making myself protect my eyes as well.  The Tifosi models with the Enliven golf lenses seem to work well for tracking the ball in the air and reading greens without costing half of a new driver.

I have a pair in each golf bag, and am making myself wear them on the course.

I’ve always like Oakleys ever since I started using them for biking.  They seem perfect for golf in my view.  I agree with a lot of other Oakley users on this thread.

I’m not sure exactly what I have, but I have 4 pairs of which 2 are flak jackets (I think) and one is an M frame.  Then I have a newer pair I don’t really like since they feel flimsy for Oakleys.  Then I have an old pair of OG Oakleys in Florescent yellow frame with iridium lenses and also a pair of OG frog skins.  I can’t seem to throw the 2 last ones out.  They are in pretty good shape.

One question, do people think polarized lenses are bad for seeing definition on the greens.  I have read that but never really tested it.  My Oakleys are all no polarized lenses.

I have never bought the prism lenses since I use my sunglasses for biking as well.  But it’s something I should really try out.  You are one of many that keep telling me the Prizms are great.  Are they too dark?  Or do you like them when the weather is mixed (ie not perfectly sunny)?

For non golf use off the course I have a couple pairs from Jacques Marie Mage, two pairs from Dita out of Japan and 2 pairs of Tom Ford which are made by Dita.

The Jacques Marie Mage and Tom Ford are acetate frames and Dita are metal frames with tungsten nose pieces.

I’ve worn some of my polarized pairs on the course before and I haven’t noticed a lot of distortion. Most of my polarized lenses have low light transmission (dark lenses) so I tend to take them off when on the green. I think it comes down to your sensitivity to it.

The OG golf lens from Oakley, the G30 iridium came in polarized and non-polarized versions. That was subsequently replaced by the Prizm Golf lens which was non-polarized mainly due to the prizm technology and the fact that polarization isn’t really needed on the course unless there is a ton of water with a lot of glare.

I have found Maui Jim's with Rose lenses to work best on and off the course.  The glass lenses are the best.

Quick overview is that I like that the do not get too dark, I err to a lighter lens that just take the edge off and yes it is good for other sporting activities like mountain biking and skiing.

I always were a pair of generic sunglasses. Can't seem to keep a pair but I have noticed I can track the ball better with a pair on instead of no pair.

I always were a pair of generic sunglasses. Can't seem to keep a pair but I have noticed I can track the ball better with a pair on instead of no pair.

It can be hard to justify the cost of a premium pair of sunglasses but I’ll say if you can tell the difference on the course with cheaper generic sunglasses as you say a premium pair is a night and day difference!

I wear the oakley Dark Prism Golf glasses. I was looking at the Goodr "All in the hips" glasses as well. Shockingly, the I found the lens tint to actually be more helpful than the polarized dark grey or amber lenses of my fishing glasses. I still can't read a green, but it definitely allows me to see more color variation on the green. It's just up to me to figure out what that means.

I personally am a sunglass snob. I found the importance of a high quality pair of sunglasses a long time ago when I started coaching high school football. I have owned a couple pairs of Oakleys over the years sold a couple off and have held on to my Half Jacket 2.0's the longest. I love the fit and how lightweight they are. My biggest selling point for Oakleys are the lenses. The clarity is unmatched and the amount of protection from the sun I get is unequal. I have light blue eyes that are super sensitive to light. When I wear "cheap" sunglasses they do not seem to either block enough sun or be as crystal clear as my Oakleys. For the longest time I only had one pair at a time, but as my Half Jackets were starting to show their age I decided that I needed a nicer pair. Thus I purchased a pair of black Crosshair's. These fit nicely but not as snug as my Half Jackets so they are more of my relax mode glasses. As with any other Oakley lenses they are super clear and block the bright light exactly the way I want them to.

About two years ago I purchased a set of the Red Iridium Prizm lenses for my Half Jackets and they are amazing for the course. I use a matte red ball from time to time and when wearing those glasses they make that ball glow. My wife thought she was being funny when she bought me those balls so please don't tell her that they worked out with my glasses...

I've used the same pair of golf prizm Oakley's for the last 5-6 years, but on a whim decided to try out the Knockaround Fairway Flight Path sunglasses. So far, I've been really impressed with them, especially for the price! They provide a very clear picture, and I like the full coverage I get with the lenses. They also stay on really well while moving around, which is another big plus. If you're in the market, they may be a great option for you! https://knockaround.com/products/fairway-flight-paths
