Golfspy_CG2
Note: Sorry I messed up when merging these topics, next week, Ill have this post at the top! For years the official start of the PGA Season began with the Tournament of Champions at Kapalula's Plantation course. What better way to start the season than the beautiful views of Hawaii and the Ocean with a strong field made up of winners from the previous season. Even with the advent of the wraparound scheduled instituted several years back--with so many tournaments having less than stellar fields-- many of us still considered this week the official start of the season. Also one of the great things about the location of this tournament is the time zone. It means us East Coasters, can watch coverage in prime time after work on Thursday and Friday! So with that I'll begin a new weekly feature this year, that highlights the tournament of the week and continue the conversation in the thread throughout the week. I'm still working a bit on the format and it may evolve throughout the season. But it will mainly be a place for us to discuss the tournament as the week goes on. So a few things to note about this weeks location. Course: Plantation Course at Kapalula Rating/Distance/Par Championship Tees 77.2/144 and 7411 Yards Par 73 Cost to Play: $329/$299 for resort guests Designers: Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore 2018 Winner/Score: Dustin Johnson -24 (won by 8 strokes) TV Coverage: Thursday & Friday 6PM EST Golf Channel Saturday and Sunday 6PM EST Golf Channel Notable players in the field: Cameron Champ Jason Day' Bryson Dechambeau Dustin Johnson Brooks Koepka Rory McIlroy Jon Rahm Patrick Reed Xander Schauffele Juston Thomas Bubba Watson There's so many things to look forward to in this tournament. The signature hole (see below) the monstrous 18th hole that plays 663 yards but severely downhill, allowing some players to go at it with an iron! Everyone will remember Dustin Johnson's drive on the 433 par 4 12th hole on Sunday last year, a shot that stopped less than a foot from being a hole in one. And for those who say people aren't influenced by what the pros do, we sold two M4 drivers in our Pro Shop that week. Worth watchingThat fits the Dave Pelz research, sort of. Always leave the flag in according to Pelz. The exception? When the wind is blowing the stick. It was often doing that today. When the wind is blowing the stick. It was often doing that today. Also the purpose of that rule was to speed play among Amateurs. Look for a local PGA tour rule forbidding it soon - that’s my prediction. I'd be surprised if this happens. The PGA has chosen to follow USGA Rules. Of course the Committee can put Local Rules in place, but the committee is specifically NOT allowed to impose a penalty where the RoG do not impose one. This is from the USGA Rules governing the Committee: Quote Rule 1.3c(3) states that the Committee does not have the authority to apply penalties in a different way than stated in the Rules of Golf. Therefore, it is inappropriate for a Committee to write an unauthorized Local Rule that waives a penalty or changes a penalty. For example, a Committee cannot change the penalty for using a non-conforming club from disqualification to the general penalty or change the general penalty for failing to replace a ball which was moved to a single stroke. The Committee must not impose penalties when the Rules do not impose them, for example, penalizing a player who failed to total his or her score on the scorecard in stroke play. More likely, in my opinion, is that the PGA will lobby the USGA/R&A to reverse the change to the flagstick rule. If enough data is produced to demonstrate that the flagstick actually DOES give an advantage, the USGA/R&A might change it. Kenny B
I thought I heard that MGS was going to test leaving the flagstick in the hole, but Dave Pelz did this 10 years ago with his conclusion that the data says to leave the flagstick in. If the MGS test is coming, it had better be soon because it's the news of the day now. My question is if Pelz has data to say that leaving the flagstick in is a benefit, why would the USGA make this new rule unless they wanted to give pros an advantage? Yes, it will likely speed up the game for us hackers, but I don't see that happening for pros and high level ams. Did they not reach out for information on the effects of leaving it in? Did they not do their own testing? “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
