puttnfool
Does anyone have a good plan for a DIY backyard hitting net? I'm thinking I could make a frame out of PVC, then put up a decent net and maybe a thick(ish) painter's drop cloth for a back drop. I'm figuring at least 8' tall, maybe 10', maybe a 2-3 foot section at a 45° angle at the top pointed toward the hitter to knock down any stray popups. Also, a side net to catch any s&#(ks. Any good ideas? If you've built one, that's great, post up some pics and details of what you did to build it. cnosil
If you do a google search you will find some basic DIY plans, but I think you have a pretty good idea on how to set one up. THEZIPR23
Here was my setup until about 2 weeks ago, upgraded to a net return pro. Net was too old and too many balls were going flying through the neighborhood. Simple but effective. 1 1/4” pvc pipe. Net was about 6 x 8 if I remember correctly. I also built a cover with 1 1/4” pvc and some tarps. 10’x16’ It works but is not that effective in the rain. puttnfool
After pricing this one out, it can be built for around $200 if you use the pro high impact netting (recommended for >110mph swing speed) and about $150 if you just use the high impact netting (good up to 110mph). dthrog00
PVC can work, but if you ever hit the cage flush with a real golf ball it will break. I have a PVC setup in my garage, but I'm spooked hitting real balls in there over risk of damage. I'm using a SKLZ Quickster 8x8 net with real golf balls in the backyard now. The SKLZ works well. I have a farmer's field behind my house so if I miss the net for whatever reason there's no harm. I've resorted to using foam balls or birdie balls if hitting in the garage. 20191105_171456 by dthrog00, on Flickr Dave Edited April 13, 2020 by dthrog00

The second time I had a cardboard box, like you'd buy used golf clubs in, in front of the PVC and the ball went through the box and still broke the PVC. 2. Shanks hit the left or right PVC - never happened to me. 3. Wedges that hit the top back PV - never happened to me either. I'd imagine some guys are like the Nascar pit crew guys when it breaks and are able to repair it quickly. The main thing is to be safe so it something happens either you or your stuff doesn't get damaged. Dave
bens197
The nice thing about PVC is it’s cheap and easy to replace. Our street hockey goals were PVC. Dad would build a 4’ x 6’ net and an extra 10’ with some extra elbows and fittings for the inevitable broken posts. cnosil 1 Quote Titleist TSi3 Fujikura Speeder NX Blue 60X TaylorMade SIM2 3 wood Fujilkura Ventus Blue 7-X Titleist U505 2 Tensei 1K Black 85 X Titleist T100 4-P Nippon Modus 3 120X PING S159 50-S 55-H 59-T DG X100 Vokey SM8 50, SM9 54 & 60 Nippon Modus 3 120s L.A.B. But I could see how it would be dangerous if it was done. I would think a pool noodle or some similar foam would be sufficient, at least it would stop the PVC from flying around. My son, who doesn't play any more , was hitting balls one day and I had the net off the grass in planter which is lined with brick. Well he didn't move it back down and hit low screamer right into brick, richochet back over the top of his head, thank god, and right through living room window. yungkory 1 Quote Stealth 2+ 9 (Diamana PD 60 S 45") Stealth 2+ 15 (Diamana PD 70 S 43") G425 19 (Raijin 2.0 85x) G425 22 (Raijin 2.0 85x) ZX7 5-9 (KBS C Taper S) Vokey SM9 45 10 F (KBS 610) Vokey SM9 49 08 F (KBS 610) Vokey SM9 55 08 M (KBS 610) Vokey SM9 59 04 T (KBS 610) Spider GT Splitback 34" ProV1 #23 Twitter @THEZIPR23 "One thing Golf has taught me, is that my muscles have no memory." TwoCoatsOfWax
Average Golfer on YouTube built a really nice one. He used something called archery netting iirc. It looks like a thicker, more tightly woven net so the balls won't go through unless it straight up rips. Also, instead of PVC, he used galvanized steel for more stability and durability. It's probably not the cheapest build out there but it looks really solid. I'd put up a link but the work laptop blocks YouTube. Apologies. Any ideas besides the pool noodle to help prevent breakage? It’s all about wall thickness, especially if you don’t want sag in the top cross member. The thicker you can get it while still being economical, the better. They also make foam filled PVC which will give it a bit of structure and impact tolerance, but it can be pricey. Calvo90
A year or so ago I built myself a hitting net using steel pipes (cheaper than PVC pipes where I come from) wrapped in foam pipe inslation. At first I designed the central panel the size of 2m wide and 2,5m high with attached right side panel of 1,5m wide and 2m high with adjustable angle to the main panel to catch the shanks I was battling with at the time. For the netting I used multiple layers of cheap anti hail net (to protect yineyards, gardens etc.), folded over the top ''rail''. After a month of driving the ball into the net the balls started to penetrate the net so for this year I bough myself tightly woven thick archery net from eBay and decided to slightly enlarge central panel (by 0,5m in width) and ditch the side panel since I managed to cure my shanks. When the wet weather passes I will assemle the whole thing again in my garden and take a few photos. tony@CIC, cnosil and MattF 3 Quote G425 MAX, 10,5°, Fujikura Ventus Blue 60S Stealth Plus 10,5°, Fujikura Pro 2.0 TS, 60S The Original One Mini Driver, 13,5°, Fujikura Ventus Red 70S G425 MAX 5 wood, 7 wood, Tensei AV Orange 75R Z U65 4, Z565 5-6, Z765 7-8 , Z965 9-PW, Project X 5.5, Glide 4.0, 52°, Z-115, 58°, Z-115 ER5, 34'', Gravity Grip
