I’m a bit overdue (Okay, I’m long overdue) for a WITB post.  With the amount of work from home time I’ve had with my clubs staring back at me I felt it was time to take some photos and create a thread here.  I’ll probably update this as changes occur, although I’ve already made a bunch of changes for the upcoming 2020 season and beyond.  I wouldn’t say that I change equipment often so this offseason was a change from the norm for me.  I was in the need of replacing some aging wedges and also reset a bit of redundancy at the top of my bag, and picked up a new big stick as a result of the complimentary True Spec Golf fitting that I had last fall.

Bag:  No better place to start than the B of WITB right?  Brand spanking new for this season I received a White OGIO Fuse 4 from Callaway/OGIO as a warranty replacement for my Callaway Hyper Lite 3 which itself was a replacement for an OGIO Shredder.  Phew that was a lot to get spit out.  I chose the white over the blue against the opinion of just about everyone except my middle (and now favorite child).  To go along with the bag I picked up two Sunfish Golf head covers, one leather for the driver and one wool for the 5-wood.  I originally had grabbed one for the hybrid too, but I like the look of the stock hybrid head over with the trio.  The putter cover is a Stitch Golf shamrock blade cover.  I like that it is different from the rest of the theme going on.

So what’s hiding behind all that leather and wool?  Let’s take a look shall we!

Driver:  Taylormade M5 10.5 with a MRC Tensei CK White Pro 60 Stiff Shaft.  This was the optimal combination at my fitting and resulted in about 8 yards greater carry and 12 yards total over my aging Ping G30 with Tour 65 shaft.  It’s currently in the spread weight setting and +1 on the loft sleeve.  I’ve been working on my swing over the winter (I’m sure you’ve never heard that before), so we will figure out final settings for the weights once the range opens up and we get some time on the course.

 

Fairway:  Ping G30 5-wood with a Ping Tour 80 Stiff shaft.  This is set in the ‘big minus’ position so is playing at 17*.  I got this as a result of a prior fitting where I was told to sell the 3-wood and get the 5-wood along with the tour shaft over the stock ping offering.  That was some of the best fitting advice I’ve ever received.  I feel confident with this club to hit a draw or fade off the tee and can play it off the fairway much better than I can a 3-wood.  Don’t mind the idiot mark on the crown.  It doesn’t bother me as long as I hit it as solidly as I do!  This will likely be in the bag for a long time.

Hybrid:  Titleist 818 H1 23* with MRC Tensei Blue 70 Stiff.  Currently A1 setting with the weight in the fade position.  My old G30 Hybrids were going a little more left that I would like and the gapping wasn’t great anymore.  I was fit for the G410 Hybrid last fall, but found a smoking deal on this and had liked it when I hit it too.  I might mess around with some shaft selection down the road (following the GOST testing intently) and keeping my eye out for a KBS Tour Hybrid Prototype as that’s what I was fit for in the G410.

Irons:  Titleist Ap2 714 5-GW with KBS C-Taper Lite Stiff shafts.  I was fit for these at Spargo Golf in Cranston, RI and can’t recommend them enough.  It was an awesome experience and my first real fitting.  This set is MOI matched and ranges from C-9 to D-2.  Standard loft, ¼ inch short, and 2 degrees flat.  I noticed an immediate improvement in dispersion after my fitting and my game improved drastically.  I wasn’t tracking my handicap at the time was fit, so I have no hard numbers to back it up, but you’ll just have to trust me.

Wedges:  Vokey SM7 – Slate Blue Limited with Nippon Modus 125 Stiff shafts.  These were the wedges and shaft I was fit into last fall, so seeing as how the SM8’s were released and I discover that these already came stock with that shaft, and had gone on sale… I was sold.  I was playing 54-58 in my old wedges but decided to go with 3 since I dropped a hybrid.  I got the 52.08F, 56.10S, and 60.12D wedges.  I wanted some variation in bounce as I am a player who can benefit from more bounce but also get into some firm lies where I think the 52.08 will be great for some bump and run shots.

 

Putter:  Here we have an Evnroll ER2B.  But lurking not far behind is my old standby Scotty Cameron Newport Select.  While they are both currently in a quarantine duel, The ER2B will be the first with me to the course this year.  It already feels so comfortable in my hands.  I was able to get it matched to the specs from my putter fitting last year. The only difference between the two is that on my Newport I have a counter weight installed in shaft and I don’t have that in the ER2B, but the grip is heavier on the ER2B.  There’s still a difference but my early tests suggest I might not be adding any more weight to the Evnroll.  

Ball:  Titleist Pro V1x and Titleist Pro V1 (AlignXL Tester).  I’ve been using Pro V1x’s for years now.  While I don’t see that changing I chose the Pro V1 model when I was selected for golfballs.com AlignXL testing because I wanted to try them out again as they are more similar now than in years past.

 

Training Aids: SuperSpeed, PuttOUT Pressure Putt Trainer, SKLZ gold flex swing trainer, Alignment Sticks, and a can of athlete’s foot spray.

Accessories: I use the PrecisionPro NX9 HD rangefinder along wit Arccos for shot tracking and GPS.  Besides that I have two Crown Royal bags, one if full of tees and the other is full of the odds and ends of ball markers, spare batteries, and divot tools.  Outside of that stuff goes in and out of the bag as needed and ranges from bug spray and sunscreen, a sweater, wind/rain layers, and sunglasses.

I think that about covers it, time to get out and play!

Thanks! I’m really liking it so far. It feels very compact and light on my back, even though its only .3 lbs lighter than the Hyperlite 3 it replaced. The straps are MUCH more comfortable than the Callaway was, I think that has a lot to do with it.

Great stuff!  Really like the set make up and recap. Especially like the variety in wedge grinds.  Max flexibility for shot making. Also eager to try the M5 weight setting, but feel like it might get a little too spinny.  I would have been with your less favorite kids and recommended against the white (says the guy with the 20 year old black bag)

Thanks!  I was torn between the two colors but didn’t like the shade of blue as much in person.  You’d probably like their black one.. It’s all black except for the two red zippers. Haha.  I figured it was worth giving a shot.  I really like the way it looks all together.  Now to just keep it clean.

SuperSpeed is awesome.  On the radar I started right around 100mph and now I frequently get 108-112 on swings where I’m doing my best to imitate a “real” golf swing and not a Happy Gilmore swing.  I’ve gotten up to 115 once, and 114 a few times.  I didn’t get to do as much as I would have liked over the winter as I have no indoor space to swing, but I’m getting back into it now and am about 2/3 through the second level.  If you’re interested (and you probably should be) its worth giving a read through the 2018 Official Testing thread and the story they did posted to the main site.  Tons of good info and a lot of people seeing the system work!

I will track down that thread. Speed has decline the last few years. Eager to bring it back and maybe surpass the old levels.
