Hey Stu, what woods do you recommend for someone who's pretty good with woods and hybrids? I'm interested in trying something out, but wasn't sure where I should look from a model perspective. My long game (minus driver) is really good (yes, I'm unusual for most ams), so I'd like to try something out.

I did pull the trigger on the Moment X Tour putter yesterday. I'm having GW build it, and hoping my notes in the order gets to them.

Ask and ye shall receive 😁

Here is the 7w. So I didn't get a chance to get out to the course today but I did have a nice little 20-minute session in my garage with the Garmin R10. I will say that after spending a few minutes with it, I really think this thing is going to be a beast on the course. I needed a club that I could easily hit and cover about 215-220 yards and get some pretty decent height under the ball AND do it consistently. From the R10 numbers, it appears that this club hits all the marks perfectly!

The sound actually wasn't so bad. Being all titanium, sometimes these heads get really tingy with a high pitch sound that I just don't love. The sound was still kind of somewhat of a tink, but with more of a lower pitch than the previous models.

I was actually pretty surprised when I put it on the swing weight scale to see c9 which is extremely light for any fairway wood. It didn't really feel that way though when I swung the club And I could totally game it this way. I may experiment with some polyfill in the head to add a few extra grams to get that swing weight up and turn the tink into more of a crack.

Another thing to note about these new "Pro" line woods, including the newer driver, is that they play quite flat. I'm a little bit taller at 6 ft 2 so there is such a thing as too flat. That said, using the upright setting on the adapter really puts the club in a nice playable position for me. I have it in the upright standard loft position for both the driver and the seven wood and it really just moves the face from slightly open to dead square and doesn't promote any snap hooks at all.

Here's the one I'm really excited to share. The putter turned out AWESOME! So far rolling some putts in the living room, it seems to be really well balanced from head to grip. All I wanted was the exact version of the PTM 4 that I built, but as a mallet. The weight is nearly identical and all the other components are the same. I like the look of this one better but outperforming the PTM-4 is gonna be a heavy task.

Looks great Stu!! I didn't realize how short heel to toe was on these seeing it with the ball next to it.

That is certainly on my list to look at. Wish it had a colored alignment line. You'll have to tell me how the raised line in the center of the rear works for alignment.

Sweet! That's the one I'd look at seeing as it's the only adjustable option Maltby offers.

Which ProSeries shaft is that? You might think about grabbing a few weights for the head to help with the SW. I look forward to hearing about it's on-course performance.

The PTM-5 is a really good putter head and amazing value. It is heavy, I remember knocking my first putt on the course 10 feet past but for me that is a good thing. My daughter now uses it built at 32" and her stroke and distance control have improved considerably. The 7 wood also sounds good, I just don't have room in the bag for it unless I drop the 4 hybrid.

I actually just used the standard FW shaft. I went with the R flex and it's so stable and smooth even at a higher SS.

That's the great thing about these is that you can easily swap out the weights and they're pretty inexpensive. The polyfill works really well as an alternative. I realize it may not be a conforming modification, but I'm not a competitive player so I'm not too worried. It really does work wonders on the sound dampening though. I'll try that first and see how it goes. TBC

That was the 1 concern I had. I loved how squat my Toulon Atlanta was from heel to toe. It made me focus more and ensured that I didn't let the putter wander forward or back. This seems pretty similar. It's definitely deeper than I'm used to but it's not offensive at all. I'll definitely keep everybody posted.

What flex did you put in it with the MPF shaft? My understanding is they play a bit on the stiffer side relative to flex. I imagine I would be somewhere between the R and the S given that information. My swing speed is high enough for an S I think but I generally prefer a smoother feeling shaft.

Yeah I went with a R flex. Standard cut. It feels a little waggle soft but is crazy stable at full juice. If your driver SS is 105++, and like a smooth Otto Phlex-like profile, this shaft is fantastic!

FYI, for those interested in the TS1-IM irons, GW Support told me they expect the 5i/7i/GW back in stock late May or early June.

I'm thinking of grabbing the others now, and then those 3 when back in stock. Spreads out the cost. 🙂

Sounds like my paltry 100mph needs the R-flex in this shaft. I'll look at the A-flex in the UL version when doing the OP in driver. But for just normal play with FW/Hybrids, the R sounds like what I need with my smoother transition.

All of the components are from Golfworks. The head and shaft are Maltby. Total build cost was around $120. I'd call it an ultra premium feeling putter. It's pretty nice.

I'm just consistently amazed at the quality of their work. That thing is seriously good-looking.  I've got my buddy's demo 6-iron coming in on Sat/Sun, and cannot WAIT to see it in person.  I'm also going to have him hit the demo TS3 I built up last year (with the Score tipped to R+) just to see if he prefers one over the other. Having just been fit into the P790s, I'm guessing he'll opt for the TS1, but you never know.  And for about $120-130 (depending on shaft option, obvs), the price-to-value proposition is absurd.

This thread has been so helpful in assessing the various Maltby iron options. I wanted to share my experience and seek some advice in case it helps anyone else figure things out!

I discovered Maltby after getting some Kirkland signature irons this winter and doing some research on DTC brands. I have been playing old Cobra Fly Z XL irons for the last ten years and my ball striking has improved enough that I want something with a better feel.

I live in suburban Columbus so I was able to go out to The GolfWorks for an iron fitting. I hit the KE4 Max, TS1, TS1 IM, TS3, TS4, and the new TE+. Just an FYI to anyone interested in going out to The GolfWorks, the fitting costs $30 and they do not trade out shafts on irons like I am accustomed to from other fitting experiences. For example, the TS3 had Dynamic Gold S300 shafts, the TS1 IM had the TT elevate 95 stiff shaft, and the others had the stock TT Score shafts in stiff flex. The fitter really pushed the Score shafts, which I didn’t mind, but is just something to know going in. Info on my game in case it helps you assess—I swing a 7 iron around 90 MPH and depending on shaft, carry a cut 155-160 and a draw 165-170. If I miss, it is out over the toe.

A couple of notes that could help others who won’t be able to go out and hit these clubs based on the location and don’t want to pay $80-100 for a test club:

1) Every iron performed well and consistently. As I have been looking for new irons, I have hit a lot of the big OEM new irons and every Maltby performed as well or better. They were much more forgiving on toe misses than others I have hit with the exception of Mizuno Hot Metals.

2) The biggest difference between the models is in feel, and the information you see in reviews online on the feel is pretty accurate. For example, the TS1 IM is just a softer feeling and slightly more forgiving version of other hollow-body irons you can hit out there. The TS4 and TE+ are firmer and you get pretty clear feedback, but both feel incredible when you absolutely pure them. The TS3 and TE+, unsurprisingly based on design features, perform similarly. The KE4 Max felt the best of any similarly designed game improvement iron I’ve hit, with the exception of Mizuno Hot Metals.

If you are thinking about saving and getting the original TS1, at my swing speed, the TS1 and TS1 IM performed pretty much the same on better shots. TS1 IM is more forgiving and feels softer on a toe miss, but the TS1 is really solid.

3) Depending on how sensitive you are to different shafts, the TT Score performs well. I would not typically get fit into a high launching shaft, but the TT Score’s weight is decent for me. When I wanted to, I was able to flight the ball down and turn it over left or right pretty easily with these shafts. Unsurprisingly, it was easiest to do this with the TS4. I lose some distance due to height when I hit one pure with the Scores—something like the Modus 120, Dynamic Gold 120, or the original Dynamic Gold S300 perform best for me—but if you want to save a lot of money on clubs, you could do worse than these shafts.

I went a couple of weeks ago and am still undecided on which irons I will buy. The day of the fitting, I was highest on the TS3 and TE+—the CB feel inspired the most confidence and the TS3 with the DG S300s performed by far the best of anything I was hitting distance and dispersion wise. But they all performed so well and so similarly that the decision is difficult. Current options are a full set (5-GW, I play a 4 hybrid) of either TS3, TE+, or TS1 IM. I also am considering a combo set blending any of the 3 above with the TS4s for my 7-GW. Also trying to decide if I want to save money and get the Scores or shell out for the shaft upgrade. As I mentioned, I also have a set of the Kirkland irons. Those are no where near as forgiving as anything Maltby I hit, but the distance is great on solid shots and I may prefer the TT Elevate 115s to the Score shafts.

Everyone on here seems so knowledgeable, so feel free to weigh in with thoughts if you think you can help me decide! Also happy to answer anyone’s questions on these since I am lucky enough to be close enough to go hit all of them.

I made a final decision and have gone through a formal iron fitting, so I thought I would go ahead and update this. I ultimately was gifted an iron fitting for my birthday and I got to use the Mizuno shaft optimizer; that was a cool tool for quickly narrowing down shafts. Ultimately, I got the TS3 5-GW with Dynamic Gold S300 shafts. The Mizuno tool suggested Project X LS 6.5, Project X Rifle 6.5, KBS C Taper X, then Dynamic Gold X100/S300, but I saw the most consistent results with the DG S300s. Also trying out a TSW 56 wedge, as my old Vokey SM6’s grooves were so worn that I was playing a Kirkland Signature 56 for a while.

The fitting result was ultimately a toss-up between the new Ping i530 and T200s. Both performed great, pretty much on par with what I saw from the TS3s at GolfWorks, but the Maltby feel won out by a long shot. Just incredible soft feeling irons. Ultimately, between the Maltby choices, I just preferred the feel and forgiveness of the CB options, but you can’t go wrong.

For what it’s worth, the total price for the custom TS3s was a little less than half the price of the T200s and exactly half the cost of the i530s with the same specs. Finding this company is like finding a 50% off coupon!

Here are some brief notes I have after playing the TS4 4-PW irons for 6 months.

  1. They are probably the most forgiving irons within their category of construction and materials.
  2. Despite the forgiveness, they take the shot shape very easily. I hit fairly neutral, but when I swing more than 1° to the right or left, it is possible that I will miss the green (even if not by much).
  3. I don't feel like I am losing any distance compared to hollow body irons of similar loft.
  4. Other iron models I've been able to test (:callaway-small: Apex TCB, :tour-edge: C722, :wilson_staff_small: CB) have a tendency to fly "straighter" on miss-hits.
  5. They feel just as good or better than any other iron (including :mizuno-small:) with the exception of some :callaway-small: and :wilson_staff_small: irons.
  6. The durability might not be as good as some non-forged irons and irons forged from harder steel. This might not be an issue if you don't hit 400-500 golf balls a week. Since I do, I am having trouble imagining that these faces will stay consistent and last longer than 18-24 months.
    20240329_163044.jpg.55cde4f47fe14f3d78bb6a1d3445e8d0.jpg
  7. The blend of feel, looks, distance, distance consistency, and dispersion (despite miss-hits being slightly more punished) is what makes me believe that this iron will be tough to beat for a while.

Note 7 was reinforced when, exactly 1 month ago, I was able to buy a set of new :wilson_staff_small: 2021 model CB irons for only $549. s-l960.jpg.b1c9f00f7bdb9752874cd6df55db774d.jpgFeel, looks, and everything else were good, but for whatever reason I wasn't as consistent with strike and distance control. I think the Wilson's were slightly smaller top to bottom and heel to toe, so that could be a factor. Another factor might be the fact that I am more custom fit for the TS4s since they have an extra 0.25" of length.

I will likely post another update here once I see how the TS4s compare to the Haywood MB/CB combo set. It will be an interesting battle since the Haywoods also have a relatively "large" overall footprint like the TS4s do.

Nice writeup and comparisons! I still love my TS4's (almost as much as my wife and kids😜) I am however considering a shaft change but not sure what yet. I'm thinking maybe something a little heavier or lower launching. Currently playing mine with KBS C-Taper  Lite 110's but soft stepped x1. Interestingly, as my swing has been improving, my disbursement had gotten slightly worse. I think I'm now launching a little too high with more ballooning spin and that's throwing off my consistency (excuse #371 in the world golf excuse handbook).

I really don't want to go try a bunch of shafts so I may just have to track down some FCM Royal Precision Rifle Flighted shafts on eBay or something. Those things are probably the best I've ever used!

So, I've mentioned this before, but I'm building up a demo 6-iron for @Billy The Kid Rogers, so he can do a direct comparison against the P790s he was recently fit into. His prescription from TrueSpec was the P790, $Taper 120, oversize Winn Dri-Tac grips, at a cost of approx $300/club (including their upcharges).

This arrived today.

IMG_9056.jpegIMG_9057.jpegIMG_9058.jpeg

Along with the Nippon 115s and Oversize Winn, and a little surprise from me for indulging my "please don't buy the P790s before trying these" insistence 😉

IMG_8934.jpeg

Total cost of this build: right around $135 (he also got a Dallas Cowboy Super Stroke grip so that we can cut his putter down an inch and re-grip), which would be the most expensive club in the set should he take the Maltby plunge, as I also added some glass beads in case there were any issues (I'm a big believer in better safe than sorry) 🙂

I'm a little stunned at just how good this thing looks. Just did a quick comparison against the TS3 6-iron I built up last summer, and 100% prefer the sightly thinner topline of the TS1.

Fingers crossed he's in love. I'll also have him hit the TS3 (with Score TT shaft tipped to R+), so he can have a fuller comparison.

Fun times!

Well, I've been one to jump in with both feet on occasion. So I did a thing the other week.

TS1-IM, 6/8/9/PW. The 5/7/GW were out of stock at the time, so I'm waiting to hear when they're back. I have a set of 5-LW of the Recoil Prototype 125 F4's that will be going into them, along with the TSW DRM wedges in 54/60 (most likely). I have the 4 iron and Proto 110 Utility shafts as well that I'll need to figure out what to do with, as I'm not a fan of the Maltby hybrids. I have some Red/White and Blue/White MCC+4's and R/W/B BB&F ferrules that'll go to build up this set.
