Olympic swimming help

Hey people who know things. I'll get straight to the point. I've been stewing for a month now after watching the Olympics this year and I need some explanation as to the swimming events. 

In short, why are there races in the backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly?

I get the freestyle race, see who can swim fastest, this makes sense. But why are the other 3 Olympic sports? Like I get they require a skill. But so does running backwards, and that isn't an Olympic event. Nor is the 100m skip or the 100m hop. But that is exactly what watching the swimming events is like. Why am I watching who can swim fast, but in a slower style?

Thanks for letting me vent about that, as of you had a choice. 

In running you run longer distances, you jump hurdles, and there is also speed walking.    They are simply additional events just like most other sports have.

Whoa whoa whoa. There is Olympic speed walking? I'll put that in the category with horse dancing. 

I get the different distances, I can appreciate the 400, 5000, etc. Was just referencing the 100 for comparison.

i opened this thread because i thought you were on a golf forum asking for help training for olympic swimming. 

i've been let down. 

but not as let down as i was when i learned they didn’t give gold medals for actually stroking breasts.

Was only an event this year, they but it in since the Olympics were in Japan, but it isnt slated for the next Olympics. Was fun to watch.

You can buy all means share the advice you had for Olympic training, I mean, I could start training.

Had been in prior.  Like many sports they come and go.   So why different Karate events,  Karate is just Karate.
