General Question to the testers: Was there any fitting done for these irons? Being DTC, if fitting was done, how was it done? Thanks for any replies in advance. I also want to reiterate that I hope these irons play as good as they look!

Hey Ben,

As you noted, MacGregor came back to the equipment world as a DTC.  At current they are offering standard options to include a few shaft options several Lamkin grip options, and some LLL adjustments as requested (a few of the testers when to a local shop to try out the shafts specifically and a few others knew their specs going into it).  So the answer is yes to fitting... but within the stock specs offered on their website.

@Ben Joest I'd echo what @GolfSpy TCB said. I didn't go anywhere to get fit, but I did run to Golf Galaxy to check out the available grips, and used some Trackman data from my latest lesson to select a shaft from the stock options available.

I left loft/lie/length at standard.

Doing some prep and looking for some input from the forum.

For the TopTracer range data, looks like I can report on:

  1. Flat Carry (yds)
  2. Total Distance (yds)
  3. Ball Speed (mph)
  4. Launch Angle (deg)
  5. Height (ft)
  6. Landing Angle (deg)
  7. Hangtime (s)
  8. Curve (ft)
  9. Offline (yds)

Currently planning to omit Total Distance as I don't think it's very accurate using this technology. Also going to leave out Hangtime.

What do people think about Height and Landing Angle? I'm on the fence, as they both feel like they should be a function of Launch Angle, so wouldn't add much value.

I think there is value in landing angle, as it indicates how a ball finishes on or near a green i.e. a steeper landing angle on the mid/long irons would indicate that the ball would hit and probably stay on the green. A shallower landing angle would indicate the ball hits and keeps on going through the target. A comparative test between your current 7i and the MacGregor 7i regarding landing angle may give a good picture of which club is more likely to hold a green from say, 150* out (*whatever distance your average 7i goes)

As to height, it gives a piece of the overall picture, but it could be discarded without detriment to your overall data and review.

@Ben Joest I was thinking higher Launch Angle would correlate to higher Landing Angle and so would be redundant.

I'll see what the data looks like. Might be interesting to correlate launch to landing Angle.

All of a sudden all my stats classes from undergrad and my MBA are firing in my head 🤪. Might have to dust off some old textbooks.

I suppose it depends on the shape and arc of the shot. The example I would cite to gently argue against that correlation would be a drive that launches low and balloons mid flight due to the spin imparted on the ball during the swing. The launch angle may be 7-8 degrees which would imply the ball would run out a bit after landing, where as the landing angle may be 50 degrees, which usually means the ball landed and stayed put. Using one piece without the other gives an incomplete picture and doesn’t tell the whole story.

All that being said and all hypotheticals aside, any direction you choose will be the right one for you and your test. I am looking forward to the results and the review. Lastly, have fun with it. 😁

@Ben Joest good point there. Hadn't considered the effect of spin as it isn't something measured with this tech. Can see it indirectly through the curve I guess. Follows that the same launch angle with a draw might have a lower landing angle than the same launch with a fade.

We'll see how much time I have come data analysis time😀

Hello Forum!

My full Introduction will come soon, but wanted to kick things off on the MacGregor MT 86 Iron Member Test thread by expressing how excited I am to put these beautiful irons in my bag.  I have had several iterations of MacGregor clubs roll through my bag over the years, and these appear to be another in a long line of clubs I will be proud to place in my bag.

As I said, more to come about me and my experience with MacGregor's over the years, but briefly:

Tim Root

  • MGS Forum Staff,
  • Virtual Championship Tour Commissioner,
  • Golf Enthusiast and
  • Nice guy 🙂

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest - I grew up in Yakima (Central Washington) and moved to Portland Metro (Vancouver Washington) for most of my adult life.

Golf in the Pacific Northwest is AMAZING and I miss it every day.

IMG_1342.jpg

I now live in Houston Texas (4 years running) with my wife Annette and our 5 children (Chandler, Connor, Cooper, Chase, and Cameron).

Before you ask... none of them golf, but I can occasionally convince one or two to join me (with the lure of driving the cart) 😉

I play out of Willow Fork Country Club and post 100+ rounds a year USUALLY... however the past 6 months have kept my golfing addiction at bay with a series of personal and work priorities.

But I'm now ready to RE-engage in my golf game, perfect timing... Summer in Houston! LOL

image.png

I am considering my MacGregor testing bag... and it just MAY include this baby...

20220907_183057.jpg

  1. Will surely put the focus on the MT 86's by ensuring I have mid to long irons into greens, and
  2. Because it is a beautiful MacGregor that just needed an excuse to get back in play 🙂

Ok, maybe not so briefly... 😉

Along with my Vintage Super Eye-O-Matic pictured above... I can think of no better time to bring out my 80's reissue Wingback Colokrom's.

20230623_180316.jpg

Oh boy... this is going to be A BLAST!!!

Beautiful set.

I don't have 2 thru SW, but I do have a 2i and a SW that have been hand me down across 3 generations of my family.
