What tee box are you playing from?

Recommended Posts

Just came across an article from Golf Digest. I found it interesting, but I’m still playing from the blues. Thoughts?

Could be interesting to pretend like you are hitting “like Rory”.

However, I don’t like the title/premise of the article haha. I am not a professional golfer and don’t expect to play like one either. I already don’t play the tips, and happy with where I’m at.

This is speculation based on what people think the new ball will be like.

As for the tees I will play,  it will depend on the course, the weather, how I am feeling that day, what I want to work on, etc.

I typically play second from back but have played every tee box and enjoy seeing different parts of the course.  I have played irons only off of every tee box as well.  I use it as practice and a chance to hit every club in my bag.

Really depends on may factors, such as course length, weather, if they have tee markers out or not, and what I may be working on during that round, or if playing with my regular group.

Typically play second from back, but also now hitting an age mark where it would be more beneficial for both hitting shorter clubs into greens and score to possibly move up another tee box.

Have played many rounds and courses using irons only or setting myself up to hit multiple wedge shots into greens, both to keep pace of play moving, or just for practice as well.

Only thing I would recommend to anyone is to play a course where it is both enjoyable for you, and you are not causing any delays to others on the course as well.

It's a great opportunity to experience different parts of the course and work on different clubs.

I wouldn't necessarily do it at the random course I go play but on my home course that I play multiple times a week, it keeps things fresh and me on my toes with my game.

I played irons only at the course on the base up near where I live. But it is a shorter course and only 9 holes. The 9th hole is a dog leg left around trees, but if you can get your irons up quick enough you only have maybe 190 over them to the green. I hit a 7 iron and was on the fringe on the far side of the green. Three putted cause I was excited I had my second eagle look. I did get an eagle once during my league night on a par 5. hit my drive 290 and had probably 170 to the pin. Hit a nice 8 iron to 2 feet and was shaking cause it was the first eagle putt I had. Backed off twice and then sunk it to win the hole. and secure us the win for the match.

Depends how I'm feeling that day.  Have played them all.  You get a very different view of the course when you play championship tees versus forward tees.  Usually, play between 6,000 - 6,400 yards in length.  i.e. white or blue.  Used Arccos and USGA data as a guide to determine best tee box to play from.  See below.

image.png.598b1d12aab9bac04a829bee5b67ceb5.png

Based on this the vast majority of men should be playing from white (5,800 - 6,200 yds), but that almost never happens except for the smart old guys.

I'm 63 years old. My husband and I started playing 8 years ago. We were range rats and I started taking lessons from Golftec for a whole year.  Now  we take private on course lessons not from Goltec. So I play from the reds. My hubby frlm the Senior tees. I don't  have a handicap  but my scores are anywhere  between 92 and 95. On a really good day they are between 85 and 90.

My daughter has started playing but she refuses to play the red tees. She can still keep up on whites though. She played hockey at UW so she has that hockey power. Glad you guys are enjoying golf! Happy birdie hunting!!!

Sometimes I play from the whites it all depends how far they are from the reds. That is good your daughter plays. I wish now I started younger. I was into so many sports that golf was too slow for me. Lol. Just goes to show ya, God has a sense of humor. 🏌‍♂️⛳

I guess I'll never know what it's like to play a course like Rory.  Tee boxes that short don't exist. 😂  I'm OK with that, and I'm also OK with Rory not playing 10,000y courses.  Stop messing with the game.

I moved up a set of tees 2 years ago when I turned 75.  I will probably not move up to the Forward tees because that's where my wife plays, and that would be totally unfair to her.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

You may also want to consider Shotscope. (Shotscope.com) Also very good, but no annual fee like Arccos.
