Steve F
My go to up to this point in my golf career is my 7 iron. I am noticing, however, that I'm starting to overshoot my targets around 150 with the 7 and have been experimenting with my 8 iron as well. My vote is for my 7 iron, but as I'm progressing and hitting better shots, I'm finding I'm stuck at times thinking I have to swing lighter with my 7 or grab my 8 and swing with more "enthusiasm." Reason I asked is all the new irons tend to have such jacked up lofts and oddly enough it seems many don't know that and I chuckle when having a beer at the club I overhear a group of guys in there 50s or 60s stating how their swings are really coming around and where they used to hit 6iron they cam reach it now with 8 I don't say a word silver & black and Steve F 2 Quote WITB Driver is PING G430 MAX 10K 9° W/VENTUS BLACK 44.5" TOUR VELVET GRIP 3 WOOD TAYLORMADE M2 15° W/ADDI BB TOUR VELVET GRIP IRONS PING G410 4 AND 5 IRON W/X100 IRONS 6-9 PING I200 W/X100 WEDGES TITLEIST VOKEY SM8 48° CHROME VOKEY 52° 56° AND 60 ALL IN CHROME FINISH WITH DYNAMIC GOLD AND MCC+4 GRIPS SCOTTY CAMERON TOUR RAT GSS 350G MATADOR GRIP SUN MOUNTAIN C-130 CART BAG NIKON LASER TITLEIST PRO V

chisag
... Depending on pin and conditions, that is a normal 8 iron for me. When between clubs or having any doubt I take more club unless there is trouble long. I have found more often than not, and like most Am's if I always take a perfect distance club, I can come up short far too often. It is rare for me to take plenty of club and go over the green, just past the pin and that's the way it should be. When you are not pin high you should be a little short 50% of the time and a little long 50% of the time. ... I know some will say all the trouble at their course is long and we have two holes just like that where long runs off the green and into a tough spot or through a fence/into the woodsy desert area, but I am talking a normal shot to a normal green and a mid pin placement. I play with far too many that hit one shot pin high and all the rest are short. In fact this was the final piece of the puzzle to get me to a + index. Just taking more club whenever there is any doubt. My thought process changed from "7 iron should get me to the pin or just a little short" to "7 iron should get me to the pin or a little long".
