Thisway84
I built a putting green in the basement to practice last summer and was able to hit a range once a week. I was thrilled with just that amount of practice. Growing up I lived at the range. It’s incredible how access and cost get in the way of that. The thing I want to do a better job of this summer is chipping around the green and bunker play… unfortunately I haven’t found a nice practice facility for that yet. The one closest to my house is full of clover and hard pan bunkers with garbage drainage. It resembles nothing close to what’s actually on the course which is well maintained. Laziness! That’s the #2 reason. I have no excuses for that. Ditto here regarding facilities! Unless you are a member at a pricey and inconvenient private golf club, practice facilities are almost completely nonexistent in this area (Southeastern PA/Philadelphia suburbs and nearby NJ). What few practice facilities do exist in the area consist of badly worn-out mats on top of concrete pads. The only public golf course that has a decent practice facility has also gone from natural grass hitting areas to mats and raised the prices by almost 100% -- and waiting times at that range can easily exceed an hour. I use their practice bunkers and chipping green frequently in good weather and also practice on their putting green semi-frequently. However, despite the fact that I have a range card for that facility, I rarely use the range for two reasons: 1.) the excessive wait times, and 2.) the fact that hitting off of mats on concrete is not only bad for my arthritic hands, wrists and elbows plus my twice surgically-repaired left shoulder, it is also not very good for golf clubs. My trips to use that practice facility have decreased from 3 or 4 times a week when they had natural grass hitting areas to once a week or less now that they have installed mats on concrete and jacked-up the prices. They know that they are the only semi-decent option within 45-50 miles and have priced their use accordingly in spite of the horrible mats!
