What Are The Best Irons In Golf?

Recommended Posts

For me right now it's Srixon MKII ZX5- KBS Tour lite stiff flex Shafts.  I am able to control ball flight and swing pattern easier than ever before.  IMO you just have to try different irons and shafts to be able to find what fits you and your swing.

I love my new Lazrus Hybrid Irons.  They help me play better.  I am hitting them higher and longer than my old irons.  I'm almost 74 and they deffinately help my game. Also they are sold at a very good price.

I'm 73 years old and I enjoy playing golf at least once a week.

How can anyone really answer this?? My current irons were fitted to me at Club Champions (Srixon ZX-4s) and they work great.

So my answer is if the clubs in your bag do what you want them to do those -for you- are the best irons in golf at this moment in time.

No wrong answers here as every golfer is different and each golfer has different experiences with products to determine what the best products are.

So for this thread what is the best set of irons you ever used? What would you consider to be the best set of irons and finally why? Was it all head design, or was it a shaft or even grip that made the big difference for you?

Looking forward to hearing what all of you think!

For me, my favorite irons were the very first King Cobra OS, probably back in 1994. I may have like them the best because of the Driving iron, 220-230 down the middle every time, teed up or off the turf. I really enjoy the set I have now though, Srixon ZX5, I put the Ping CB Gold shafts in them and they are smooth as butter!

Mizuno MP32: best head shape and size.  Buttery feel when you hit them solid, feedback when you didn’t.

A friend gave me a set of 90’s Hogan blades that will always hold the top spot for me. They were the best feeling irons I’ve ever hit. I’ve mostly stuck to Mizuno blades and cavity backs since.

The best irons in golf are the ones that are fitted to you.  All of the major manufactures have very good products but, all are slightly different.  I believe that the shaft  is just as important as the club head.  I bought a set of PXG irons that were fit to me, W through 6 iron.  I felt that I still needed a 5 iron so I took out my old knock off 5 iron and had the same shaft put in it as the PXG's.  I could not discern very much difference in the club.

Over the past 50 years I’ve played blades, CBs and now multi material. Favourites vary by age and memory. The swing hasn’t changed and technology definitely makes a difference.

In my (long gone) youth  I played Lynx CR (favourite design)Wilson Staff, then Mizuno (favourite brand) MS3, TP9 and TP11 (best blade). In middle age I switched to cavity backs from Ping Eye 2’s (great shaft ZZ lite), 845s, Lynx FC and then the Taylor Made 300s (all time favourite) & Mizuno 60’s with Rifle 5.5 shafts.

Shafts seemed to be the key to the elusive set balance. Many years with Brunswick and then in later years switching the MP 60s into KBS 90s. Now on the Srixon ZX4 II with Recoils, easiest to hit and long.  In the running for favourite.

Perhaps the ego and emotion should have been parked long ago 🙂

Best irons, nothing close, are Miura. Look and feel are ridiculous in a very good way.

only issue is my swing speed has slowed (I guess thing happen at 70 !!),  so time to change shaft from 3000 (stiff).

I tested Taylor Made and Titleist at Lincoln Hills fitting day. Slight distance improvement but not enough “arm candy factor” to offset the price.

I've tried a lot of different irons. Most of them produce the same results but my current gamers are the BEST. The main reason I got them was because I've always heard Mizuno irons were superior and it was rated #1 in Mygolfspy player distance irons. I highly recommend the mizuno pro 225.  I've already converted 2 of my friends to them. My second choice is the Taylormade p790s which I had prior. I thought they were the last irons I was purchasing but when i found a good deal on the Mizunos, i had to try them. Between the two, I feel the Mizunos are more accurate and love the feel off the face. I still recommend my friends to the p790s which 2 of them recently purchased. These are my beauties in the picture.  😁

haven't had much history. Taylormade burner 2.0 irons and now in the PXG Gen 6.

But I did do a fitting on this set and PXGs won over taylormade, Callaway, and Titleist.  Been super happy with the results and my game.

So PXG for me

I think there IS a right answer and that answer is the irons your a fitted for.  Irons that you are fittes for, were choosen for many reason, which should result in confidence when you swing.  Doubt is the (my opinion) the worst thing to have in you head.  And confidence in your irons, reduces the doubt.

What's best for me isn't best for everyone else. That said, after trying numerous heads from different OEMs, the best feel/performance option was Mizuno. Admittedly, I'm a fanboy, but during my fitting I was very close to going with a set of Pings. Had they been a little tighter in dispersion distance-wise, my signature would look a bit different.

Being a Mizuno fanboy... anything Mizuno for me. Playing MP64's for the last 14 years. It's time to admit that my age renders them ineffective at this point. I don't have the swing speed any more. It's time to find a little help.😉

Based on your screen name, all you need is to move to LA, er back to OAK, er follow money to LV!!

LV you can play year round!!

just win baby

I am on my 3rd set of Pings, currently playing i500 4 through PW. I love the compact look and the feel is the best I have ever hit. I was looking Taylormade but I'm 6'5" and the are not customizable to my specks. Ping can go to 5 degrees upright so until I can afford a fully bespoke set I will rock with Ping.

Now I'll go back many years.  I was told this by a golfing friend.  He would contact the manufacturer and ask if they sorted heads to get the correct swing weight.  If they did, good.  If they didn't, it meant they poured lead powder down the shaft which would move the sweet spot, bad.  Back then, Wilson and MacGregor were the leaders.

I was a Wilson Staff Dynapower guy; red rubber dot on the sole meant stiff shaft.  Super thin top line.  The short irons were so choice.

I would have to say my Miura CB 57 irons.  As a 14.1 index, some might think these are not an iron for me.  They are buttery smooth, dead accurate and so consistent in distance.  I was fitted 9 years ago and have not yet had the itch for a new, high tech iron.  Plain old forged steel. After all these years, I still enjoy the clean esthetic.

Such a subjective topic…

I agree with the others that have said the best are what you feel most comfortable standing over.

I know that they’re older, and nowhere near modern technology, but I cannot get my old Titleist DCI Black Oversize + with Rifle Steel Shafts out of my head.

Not only did I shoot my best scores with them, but there’s a lot to be said for the amount of confidence I felt with them.

I’ve gone through the ringer trying to fit myself over the past few years, buying different sets, sizes, flex etc. I think overall, my favorite set to play with were my Taylormade P7-MC because they were a challenging blade that really forced me to be precise when striking.

IMG_9708.jpeg.04d5a1c77c4e922ff4464059b345b8e4.jpegI also did a fun rebuild to them and have since sold them to rebuild their older brother - Taylormade Tour Preferred MC - and my current gamers. I found an affordable price in great condition, to which I re-shafted, put new ferrules on and hack away with.

(Honorable Mention: Srixon Z785) shot my first ever round in the 70s with this set. Are a little stronger lofted and slightly bulkier than they Taylormades I’ve had, but I love the v-sole in terms of ground contact when striking the ball.

Swing with purpose,

Anthony
