@Marlin Dave: I'd be curious to know how the finish is applied by Callaway and Cobra vs PXG!

I've been eyeing the Taylormade P7MC irons for about about 6 months now. I have wanted to replace my full iron set (3-PW) for a while now but haven't been able to pull the trigger.

Back story: I started playing golf about 5 years ago after my baseball career ended. I was good for about 1-2 rounds a month, 6 months a year, and never went to the range or practiced in any capacity. I would typically shoot around 90, but decided to start going to the range 1-2 times a week last summer and after 2 months I was consistently shooting between 75-85. At that point I was still playing the old Callaway Rogue game improvement irons, and was told I needed to get fitted and upgrade my irons to something that will allow me to work the ball a little more.

I went and got "fitted" at the PGA Superstore in Southlake, TX last fall, which was not worth the money in my opinion. The fitter kept wanting me to go back to different club heads after we had found the ones that worked best for me (Taylormade P7MC), and never tried out different shafts to go with them. He wasn't really doing anything to actually fit me for the right clubs, he was just asking me what I wanted to try and play around with. I can do that in another bay all by myself without having to pay for it... Needless to say, I left feeling like I didn't get all the information I needed to make that large of a purchase. The only knowledge I left with was that I love that club head, and I swing a 7-iron 97mph on average.

I have been eyeing the P7MC irons for 6 months but I'm still hesitant to pull the trigger. I put it off because my wife and I paid for most of our wedding last fall and we've been saving to buy a house.

If anybody has any honest reviews of these irons, please let me know. That could definitely help convince me to finally make the decision.

Got to see the new TM Qi10 yesterday and the new Ping driver.  May have to test drive one of them.  Still thinking about those Ping S159's though.  And thinking about taking my four long clubs - 3W, 1H, 3H, and 4iron and gapping them to three clubs.

I hate that you had a bad experience with the fitting as it is the best way to go, if done correctly.  My suggestion would be to go find a reputable fitter.  Ask the golf course you play at or any golf buddies who may have had it done.  When I got fitted for my Pings a few years ago we started with Mizuno as their preference, but I am not a Mizuno fan but it gave them a base.  Then we went to Callaway, Ping, Taylor Made.  Once we found the ones that produced the best results (RPM's off the face) and feel, then he dove in with the shafts and figuring out what we thought would work best.  I should have gone with the Callways as they were about a club longer, but the price was also a bit higher too.  But I definitely recommend a fitting to help your game the most, just a good reputable one.

I'm thinking this year may be the year for new irons... I'm one of the Mizuno fan boys but really like the look of Ping Blueprint irons, I mean who doesn't?? As well as the Titleist t-series. I really want to get more into a combo set this time around with a full fitting to see if any LLL adjustments can help me.

I know Callaway and Cobra call it a Black PVD whatever that means??? Not sure if that's a process or a color deal??

More on PVD as far as durability: again, I quote:

I've been eyeing the new SM10 wedges, mostly due to boredom with snow still on the ground. Has anyone here used the SM9's and tested the SM10's? If so is there any real difference or should I be just fine with my current SM9's for the time being?

Process. PVD = Physical Vapor Deposition

One of the materials guys or engineers on here could explain it better, but basically (as I understand it) vs a coating the color mixes / bonds with the metal in the head.

Not a materials or chemical guy, but the PVD coating process is really big in automotive wheel applications in place of traditional "chrome plating" processes.

Again, as mentioned previously, constantly having it subjected to impact and outside environmental conditions may impact how it looks after repeated use.

I have a pvd coated watch!! And it's super durable I've fished in it many times and there are no scratches.

I started playing many years ago but got back into it a lot last year. I took a few lessons and had a mini iron fitting at the end. I currently hit some older Adams RPM clubs. I swung my instructor's newer Callaway clubs and immediately felt the weight difference. Wow, my clubs feel like cinder blocks now.  My mini-fitting suggested paradym x as the irons for me and I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on a like new used set from Calaway's preowned dept. Living in Alaska, there are no formal golf stores, only company reps that will fit their respective brands so I haven't been able to swing multiple brands at once to judge for myself. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the site!  Is there a general sports store that carries different golf clubs in sets? (Dicks, Academy, etc) if so, maybe one of them has a few demos around?  Also, do the golf courses ever have demo days there?

Callaway makes great clubs and going through their preowned store helps from a price perspective.    The only question to answer is which heads and shafts would help you out the most.     Since there are company reps,  it might be a good idea to try some of the clubs and see what could possibly work for you.

Thanks! Not really a general sports store anymore. There are demo days but mainly Callaway and Taylor Made from what I'm seeing on the calendar and pretty far apart. I'm hoping to purchase before the snow melt so I'm ready to go when the course opens. I'm ok with going Callaway, I have a couple of their clubs already and I liked what I swung last fall. I would like to swing other brands together but without flying south to do so I may be out of luck. My wife is expecting our 2nd in late April or early May so that seems to be out of the question lol. I think I'll find a decent deal on some used ones directly from Callaway via a rep I found and they have 25% at the moment.

My instructor/Callaway rep did have me try a couple of different heads and shafts. No launch monitor to get numbers or anything so was more on feel, flight, and the contact sticker on the face of the club. It was obviously all Callaway heads, I think I hit the rouge, apex, paradym, and paradym x heads. The X is what he recommended.

Might be the least expensive putter I've ever owned, if I decide to pull the trigger. Golfworks is actually giving me the weight kit for the grip, free. Which is awesome. $10 to build it, then whatever shipping is. High MOI (second highest they offer), which I love. So we'll see if I decide to pull the trigger.

I always forget that Maltby has putters. Very cool concept. Let us know if you end up buying!

I’ve been thinking about moving into the “players distance” iron space for a while. After my recent health scare I might get permission. My youngest has even started lobbying the finance manager on my behalfHer line was “if he died we’d have less money than having him alive and buying golf clubs” Subtle as a truck that one.

I’ve had a hit of my mates TM790s, easily a club further with a good descent angle, so they’ll be on the list. Will probably look at all the options in the space and hopefully end up with something that works for me

After my TPT shaft fitting for the forum review here. Jon the fitter mentioned that a 10 degree head turned down would probably be better than a 9 turned up I am going to have my eyes open for a good deal if one pops up. Also Jon pointed out that the TPT shafts only have 2 layers of clear coat instead of a few layers of paint and clear coat so to be more aware of bag rash so I am looking for some sock style head covers that run down the shaft further.

Stopped in to golf galaxy to return a pair of shoes that were shipped to me in the wrong size and hit the Ping Blueprint S irons. I’ve never owned Ping irons but these were extremely forgiving and hot off the face. I noticed very minor reduction in distance and ball speed with mishits. It’s definitely got me thinking of possibly upgrading my Mizunos with a combo set of the Ping blueprint S & T irons

I finally got to hit the Mizuno 923 Forged with Recoil SW 780 shafts, and compared those to the MMT shafts. Both felt very good for me without being whippy or boardy. It seemed I hit the recoils a little higher which is a better fit for me. I went ahead and placed an order. The Mizuno rep said the 923 forged and 923 tour are both retailing now for $150/club. Apparently it will appear live to the public tomorrow but I got to order at the new price. 

I returned a used set of the Cobra King Tour 2023 irons with steelfiber shafts, as they just did not feel solid. I was very disappointed as the demo club I hit, even with steel shafts, felt much much better. I wish I had a chance to try the cobra tour with the mmt shaft in case the feel issue was unique to that set or the steelfiber shaft, but I haven't been able to find a demo anywhere. 

I think the Mizuno 923 Forged should be a very good match for where my game is right now. Excited to get them and see how they play.

Been searching for quite a while now on what I'm going to replace my ping i10s with. Been looking at Haywood, Byrdie, Ram, Tacomo, New Level, and Louisville Golf. Among others, but those have caught my eye the most so far. I want something aesthetically pleasing as much as something I can hit. And cavity backs sure aren't the prettiest so I've been debating pulling the trigger on an in between or a straight muscle back. We'll see what happens!
