What're Your Thoughts?

Hey guys!

 

I'm curious to hear what you guys think about something. One of my favorite things to fill my time with are podcasts. I spend pretty much all day at work with one playing and have them that cover a HUGE range of topics. It's pretty amazing to learn about something you never would have found interesting from the surface, but when someone breaks a story down in an interesting way it can become absolutely fascinating.

 

So I've been thinking. I have a few golf podcasts, but nothing really stands out as being top notch. I feel like there is an interesting opportunity here for us.

 

What would you guys think of a MGS Podcast? This is specifically MY idea, and may never develop legs and become anything, but would you guys enjoy hearing from the staff in an audio format?

 

What would you want it to be like? How long? What topics? What do you think?

As for the MGS idea. Interesting thought. But I don't see myself listening to it much or ever.

Reason... I don't listen to or watch much from my computer , phone, tablets, etc.

I think an open/unbiased conversation about the golf industry is sorely needed in the industry. The audio format may be the perfect delivery device for that message.

I typically fill my drive to work with podcasts and depending on the season they vary. During football season I'm usually listening to one of the daily Fantasy football podcasts, during spring it's usually golf related whether it be Golf Digest, Tee'd up or some of the other one's that I've found.So in answer to your question, yes I'd listen to it if it were available.

I could see it being interesting for the right demographics. I sometimes listen to the podcasts at the Berkman Centre for Internet and Society at Harvard Law, because I went there.

So did this ever become a thing? I listen to sports radio almost exclusively so a MGS podcast would be an easy leap.

 

Even if it's only one per month or like 2-3 per year. You could even have pieces where you interview interesting folks on the site or in the industry.

I'm 49 and never picked-up on the podcast wave... If it's morning, and I'm driving, I'm listening to the Dan Patrick Show on XM. After that, it's music all day. When I'm working from home, I usually work in silence... With three young kids, it's the only quiet time I get!!!

The only podcasts I've listened to have been the Callaway ones back when I was a “homer” of theirs... I just don't ever really have time for a 30-60 minute listen.

I'd give listening a shot, but there isn't much that would keep me hooked through an entire episode unless it dealt with the “mind” aspect of golf. Swing and equipment have been done ad nauseam.

Interesting timing that this was bumped today...Thanks Stud!!     As I started listening to the new GolfDigest PodCast on Ty Tron this morning on my drive in.  It's 45 minutes, so I still have 20 minutes of it to go, that'll save for the drive to a basketball game tonight.

 

I get so sick and tired of the Kirk Cousins contract talk that is litteral on the DC sports talk from morning till night EVERY DAY.  I'm serious anyone else in the DC area that listens to either of the main statins can verify this.   

 

So it'd be nice to have a few good golf podcasts, and I do have a few college hoop ones I listen too off an on.   A MGS one would definitely fit in my drive time.

 

Things it could cover.

 

• Obviously any new club releases or technology that is current
• If you could get a couple of the OEM R&D types to open up honestly about some of the biggest myths in club design, fitting and things like that.
• A regular guest from the tour, ie caddie, player or media member of some sort to give an inside look
• Someone to talk about the business of golf, both good bad and all.

With the upcoming PGA Show it might be a great time to meet with some of the above to get content or at least to see of their willingness down the line to participate.

I thought about making a “....... with Shankster Podcast”. But I'm very monotone, my would be listeners would fall asleep driving. Just think Ben Stein... Bueller, Bueller.

Not a big podcast person. I have listened to them in the past but they don't really hold my attention for very long. Maybe I haven't found the right one but even golf

Specific podcast only have a couple of episodes that I would consider listening too.

 

I think the reason is they require that I concentrate on what I am listening too and I prefer something that would be background noise. Same reason I hate talk radio.

I have a 2 hour commute door-to-door each way (for a total of 4 hours) from my home to my office in Boston.

Hard to believe, I know... but... Boston has the 2nd highest housing costs in the nation (apparently) and if you want a piece of grass then you've got to get out in the burbs.

 

That being said I am a HUGE podcast fan...hell, I've got 4 hours to kill...what else am I going to do.

 

I rotate around through various pods and use the "Pocket Casts" app on my android.  Attached a screenshot of some I have in the queue now.

 

I'm pretty finicky when it comes to pods since it is now pretty "trendy" and everyone is jumping on board; it's a really inexpensive way to create a show but if it is done well it can be fantastic.

 

I'd be interested in hearing what MGS has to offer.  I'll admit though, I've listened to some of the golf pods and they can be pretty dry sometimes; although, I do like the Feherty show on TGC.  I record it to get through the commercials and dumb parts; I mention this to say that not everything with golf is dry and it can be interesting.

I have 35-40 minutes each way, and that is way too long.

I only have like a 15 minute drive in but I'd still listen to podcasts if I found one I liked. Even if I have to listen to it over the course of a few days, that's no biggie.

I think a lot of people really liked to hear Adam's thoughts on the anser putters ... if it was something along those lines then there can really be something here.

You need to add Dan Carlin's “Hardcore History”. Beware, though, these are LONG. Like hours long. Only good for plane rides or long drives. (Highway not Fairway...)

I think this format, along with discussion of reviewed products (perhaps even notes on member reviews) would be an interesting listen. You've got to have SOME different slant, or you're just another voice in the wilderness.

I've heard recommendations over the years for Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. It's one of those things on the backburner in my head, that WILL become reality one day for me to listen to. I'm very familiar with the long podcast format. If you're familiar with any of Tim Ferriss' work they are commonly 2-3 hours long. Fantastic stuff, always though.

 

Also, it's extremely interesting to see the company take this direction! I'm thrilled it is going to become a real thing at this point, and continue to stand behind my idea that simply maintaining the perspective that MGS brings to the table every day (honest insight, power to the player, cut through the bullshit, etc.) is exactly how to structure it. Would be fantastic to see that happen! With the obvious player interviews, company interviews, product info/releases and maybe an "ask the member" segment where they interview some normal guy out of the forums to ask why they are so loyal to this community.

I like this idea, would love to hear interviews with MGS staff, equipment companies both large and small, forum members. For me, 30-45 minutes podcasts are ideal.

The name..... Hmmmmmmm might need a contest on that one
