It took over 8 years to put together my modern system but still old school so this system only vinyl and reel to reel. A dedicated room is also a must for me. I don't think most people understand the quality of sound some of the old 70's receivers have. many are very musical with great midrange. chisag
... I am a long time audiophile and got my system where I wanted it many years ago. After my years as a DJ I made some contacts in the industy and got most of my stuff at 50% off or less. I was lucky. I have 5 Hales speakers with 3 across the front end. I met Paul Hales and he had the warmest, most accurate speakers I heard. He designed his speakers using Ayre Amps so they were also a natural tandem. Both Amp and Speakers are internally wired with Cardas wiring and Cardas binding posts so I purchased Cardas interconnects and speaker cables. Insanely expensive but again I was able to purchase them for less than 60% of the price, which was still more expensive than most peoples entire system. When it comes to sound, you get what you pay for and while some think interconnects/speaker cables make no difference, listening to different ones when you have a very accurate system is glaringly apparent. Using $2500 interconnects/speaker cables with a $500 receiver and cheap speakers you will find no difference in sound of course, but a sound system is always defined by your weakest link, so the goal is not to have a weak link. ... I learned early in the digital era that a Processor can sound as good as a tube amp and high end turntable IF you are willing to pay for an audiophile Processor. $5,000 to $15,000 can produce sound that feels like you are listening live. I really wanted a Spectral Processor but at that time could not afford the discounted pricing around $5,000 and ended up with. Meridian Processor. Blu Ray players threw a monkey wrench into audiophile CD/DVD players and most of the high end guys were out of the biz by the time Blu Ray became popular so I have an Oppo Blu Ray player CD transport. Even they are out if the business now. Then to further change the face of audio interconnects in the digital age, HDMI became the standard and they are as accurate as it gets for $25. While I put an insane amount of money into my system which took years to build, I think you can put together something close to what I have for 1/2 the price or less today. I am looking at Emotiva for a Processor ($2900) and 5 channel Amp ($1600) when I buy a second home in Phoenix. Considering I will not need speaker cables or interconnects that seems like a bargain compared to Audiophile Hay Days. Shapotomous, Larryd3 and Rickp 3 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... I bet it sounds awesome though! ... Thanks! I was seriously into high end audio for quite some time. I will simplify it in golf terms. Most peoples audio equipment is like an old surlyn covered 2 piece Top Flite ball. It gets the job done as far as being able to play golf at a lo al muni but you can't spin it, check it or do most of the things you can with a TP5 urethane covered ball with 5 layers that do everything a better player has the ability to accomplish at a championship golf course. So most peoples idea of audio is just hitting it as far as you can, find it and hit it again with little control or nuance trying to break 100, and of course there is nothing at all wrong with that. Audiophiles sound systems work the ball high and low, side to side, spin some but roll out others having complete control while playing at a very high level paying attention to every little nuance trying to shoot in the 60's. It also depends on whether or not you dedicate listening time to your system, perhaps sitting in the dark and listening to an entire CD like a concert or is it basically background music while you do other things. Like Clint said....A mans got to know his limitations and I am in the top flite category. Unfortunately almost all those nuances would be missed by me with my tinnitus & poor hearing so the money would not be well spent in my case. I can still hear the sound quality difference between ipod and CD (major) and CD and vinyl (minor to me now) so when i want to really enjoy some music I will make time to put it on the system in the basement and position my chair appropriately between the polk's and crank it up to where I need it. More often though I use my ipod & headset on the tractor or on the bluetooth speaker in the workshop listening to the quirky playlist too. chisag 1 Quote Modern Bag: G410 LST 10.5*, Hzrdus Smoke RDX 6.5 Flex; 915F 3w, Diamana S+ 70 S flex; Snake Eyes 18* 2h, 23* 4h & 27* 5h; JPX 900 Forged 6 - PW, PX LZ 6.0; Edison 2.0 49*, 53*, 57* KBS Tour 120 S; Heppler Fetch; Ball - MTB-X; Bag - Jones MyGolfSpy Edition! Sluggo42
It’s funny to hear how deep the audiophiles equipment knowledge goes, and how far away I am from that. when I was young, I had what I thought was a pretty gnarly system that consisted of a set of speaker lab “K’s”, a “Fisher Sudio-Standard” Amp/receiver that was 700 watts (if I remember right), and a nice record player. We would always use a record cleaner wand prior to dropping the needle with the little handle that softly set the needle down. Then we would blast some queen/Aerosmith/zeppelin/ELP/etc... as loud as we could take it... Also played in numerous bands as a drummer, and went shooting a lot. now I’m darn near deaf. Thankful I got to listen to a lot of good stuff when the ears worked...
