I will say in all fairness and I have said it before 99% of all of those that play the game play by the rules of their own group and could care less what the USGA The R&A or the PGA Tour for that matter say. Most courses here made again a local rule and disregarded the Anchor ban because a lot of senior league players have bad backs and such. ... Nerves are a huge part of competitive golf and I was all for banning anchored putters on Tour. If your nerves get the best if you on the back 9 at Augusta you deserved to lose because putting is the great equalizer when golf is played at the highest level. ... But like you, I really could not care less what an AM does during a round of recreational golf or local tourneys and if anchoring a long putter to their chest or belly helps them enjoy the game more why not? Especially those with a variety of physical issues. And if someone distance challenged wants to use an ERC and MG Senior ball that are both over the legal limit for distance have at it! This is one of the reasons I am all for a roll back of distance for the top .001% because we have bifurcated the rules forever and pretending we all play the same equipment and use the same rules as the Tour Pros on any tour has never been the case for the vast majority that play this great game. I have tried the MG Senior ball and I swear I can not get as much out of it as I do a Srixon Q Star or Q Star Tour. Back in the golf shop days I built a bunch of non conforming SOOO Long Intregra drivers. Back then I could still hit a golf ball and we built one for me. Those heads and faces were cheap and the faces as thin as paper. Never used it in actual play but I caved the face in one night on the range. LeftyAbruzz
I honestly have lost count. I started out with a brand new box set of Wilson 1200LT clubs I bought at Service Merchandise in late 80's and early 90's. Had those for a few years and then started my annual to bi-annual changing of the irons. My guess is that I have owned at least 20 different sets of irons. I have had Wilson, Cleveland, Adams, Cobra, knock off Pings called Zings, Zevo, TaylorMade, Mizuno and now PXG. Fast forward to the last 25 years and the floodgates opened for left-handed golf club manufacturing and we, most of us lefties became golf club junkies and have been on a spending spree for years, I would only guess at least 30 sets of irons and so many more drivers and putters to go with that. ParFore74x
Cool topic. There are some impressive lists in here! My list is on the short side, only three sets of irons. Square Two Rave II 4-PW. Wife purchased a used set of these for me somewhere around 2009-10 because I kept mentioning that I was “contemplating taking up golf”. Her way of making me stop talking about it and do it. I actually still have this set. I was only playing a couple rounds a year at this time, usually golf outings through my employer. Callaway X2 Hot 4-AW. Bought these used in 2017 when I decided that I actually was going to make golf one of my priorities. Started playing at least weekly and made the attempt at improving. Kind of wish I would have kept these because they made me really enjoy the game. Started to consider myself a golfer and not just someone who plays golf somewhere during the time that I had these. Mizuno JPX-921HM 4-GW. Bought new and fitted in 2021. Current set in my bag and absolutely love these. ChiefMikeOfficer
Irons are one thing that I stick with for a while... if we did this same exercise with drivers, I'd probably miss 4-5 of them... Before full-size sets, had some custom-built Golfsmith stuff (Texas Classic 3-5-7-9, I think). The full size sets: Cleveland VAS 2-LW - before you ask: used them for multiple years. Yes, I still have them. Yes, they're all-original...including the original grips Ping i3 Blade 2-PW - loved these things, but ran into shaft issues, I'm guessing related to getting slammed in a trunk or something (plus overuse, maybe not drying, etc.). 2-iron actually snapped on me, mid-swing, inside the grip, while demonstrating at a junior clinic -- all the kids got a good laugh, but after replacing the shafts with what our pro had in the shop, played 6 months of the worst golf I could imagine. While they were being fixed, I borrowed a set of Mizuno T Zoid Pro and nabbed what is still my only individual tournament win, so... Philip_R
I started off playing golf with one of my father's old Tommy Armour blades, that was in 1997. Then in 1998 by father bought me a set of Anvil Irons with a Spalding Big Momma 3 wood and a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 gun metal putter. The deal was then if I become a single handicap I can get better clubs. Then in 2000 I became a 9 handicap and got a set of Muzino T-Zoid Comp CT irons and a Muzino T-Zoid driver with a golden head. In 2002 I added a Hogan Apex Edge 2 iron to the bag and in 2003 I changed the driver to a Taylormade R540. In 2003 I cracked the face on the R540 which Taylormade then swapped for a R540XD. In 2006 I bought a Nike Sumo SQ driver which I could carry 320m. In 2008 I bought my current Muzino MP32 irons. In 2009 I cracked the face on the Nike and the local retailers wouldn't even do the effort to get it to the Nike rep to have a look at it, so I bought a Adams driver, also with a square head and fitted it with an extra stiff shaft. In 2021 I bought a used Taylormade R15 driver. In 2022 my brother in law swapped my R15 for a Titleist TS3. The putter my father bought in 1998 is still in the bag without any plans for me to change it. In 2023, as in tomorrow, I am planning to go for a fitment with Srixon for irons, will see how it goes and if they are worth the change from the MP32's. I do think the more forgiveness will help my scores a lot. with the blades any slight mishit really punishes my game.
