I think it's important to keep in mind this particular glove we are testing is not meant to last an entire season or even half a season. Red Rooster set our expectations by saying they only expect the Sussex to last 2-4 rounds before possibly replacing it. Their target group are tournament players where you will use a glove once per round or those who are going on a trip or playing a very special course. Just something to keep in mind as you read the test. I plan to wear this glove throughout the entire season to see when that failure point is and will be updating the thread well past the test deadline.

They do have other offerings, like the cape, that may be closer in durability to other gloves us amateur golfers are used to.

Adding on, I believe Red Rooster also indicated that typically these gloves would/could then be relegated to the practice range glove.  Am I correct on that or did I misunderstand the discussion during the forum community call?

That is correct and discussing the glove on the fitting phone call I did not get the impression it was a glove that was going to fall apart sooner than expected but it was expected to show wear sooner than the other offerings.

I agree with Stephen that this short testing period of 4 weeks or so will be followed by the extended wear with ongoing testing information much as I did with the Decathlon Inesis Waterproof shoes (that apart from becoming smelly are still in great shape after 2 full seasons and a necessary shoelace replacement - and note to self to update that thread).

Correct, similar to how you would with any other glove you currently game so long as there isn't a hole in it most of the time it becomes a range glove after it hardens or the leather starts to peel. The other application i could see is if the weather conditions are too wet for a new glove but not wet enough for rain gloves it could take that spot.

So the sussex is really a competitor for the FJ Pure Touch and Titleist Players gloves?  Very high end with thin leather for good feel but not necessarily a durable glove?  I know those other 2 are really meant to only be used 1 round or so which is probably not what most golfers do.....or at least those that aren't getting free gloves and balls from the OEMs.

You have it right, @ChitownM2.  The Sussex is Red Rooster's softest and thinnest glove.  That said, Red Rooster expects it to last longer than one round -- more like 3-5 rounds.  Testing has started so we will let you know!

I haven't had a chance to go find and watch this video call everyone is referring to, but did they say what they expect the life to be of one of the standard leather gloves?

Here’s the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vk_z70tQlKLfV3ebKuBRPou5WwwooAj4/view

I know the Sussex was expected around the 2-4 round mark. I’m not sure what Red Rooster’s estimate was for the Cape. The other piece to durability is it’ll be different for every player. Do you have a stronger grip or weaker grip? Are you using corded grips or softer wrap style grips? Do you choke the chicken or cradle the bird? My wear point is typically on the lower right pad of my palm because I’m have a strong left hand grip so that tends to be my main pressure point.

Make sure to follow the thread as most of us testing are planning on wear these gloves until failure and updating as we go. I typically play the gloves you mentions specifically the Titleist Players glove and I get more than 5 rounds out it. So my initial reaction is that the Sussex glove from red rooster will be no different. I think I could get 8-10 rounds out of it. But time will tell.

3-5 rounds?  Yowza. IMO the wear depends on the golfer - if you have a solid grip and do not regrip during the swing, the glove will last a lot longer.

I was testing 2 RR gloves before being sidelined with a medical issue.  IMO the RR gloves and pretty amazing and will last way longer than the 10 rounds they talk about. I had maybe 5 rounds in for 2 gloves and they were conforming to my hands like I like gloves to do and they had essentially no wear, but I can wear a glove for 30-40 rounds these days - since I stopped regripping and wearing a hole in the palm

the two I was using are the Saddle and Scotts Silver - I do not like white gloves since they show stains too easily and these two are keepers for sure.

Just chiming in to say that my unboxing, first impressions, and aesthetics judgments are posted in the testing thread.

On-course testing started this weekend just ended.  An impressive beginning from Red Rooster.  (I mean, it's a rooster, so . . ..)

Fit/Feel/Performance/Etc. coming soon.  (Spoiler Alert:  Testers bleed for this glove!  Make it more redder!)

Good information to know as we follow along.  That really helps perspective 👍.  Personally there is no way I'd purchase any glove that is only expected to last 2-4 rounds.  The Kirkland's I've been using over the past few years last 16-20 rounds plus that many range and practice sessions.  I probably wear gloves a bit longer than some - typically only replacing when the thumb breaks through or they just get too slick in the palm.

Curious how others rank durability in glove choices?

I will say I tried to ask Kerry on the community call what his definition of “done” was when it came to a glove and I never really got a direct answer. My guess is because he and his cofounder are above average golfers they are used to switching gloves after 1-2 rounds.

I definitely expect more than 2-4 rounds out my gloves. I normally  play the Titleist Players glove and will get 10-15 rounds out of that before I think it’s time for a new one. Feel and fit are a lot higher on my list than durability. I’m okay spending $50-$75 a year on gloves.

To Kerry’s point I will also tend to prematurely replace my glove if I go on a golf trip or am playing in a tournament. You’re already spending a lot of money on both of those scenarios so why show up with a sweat stayed stretched out glove?

A pretty cool update (in my opinion) for all you Glovies, or Roosters.. idk we’ll figure it out.

Anyways had a nice little email exchange with Kerry over at Red Rooster and we decided to swap out one of my Medium-Large gloves for a Medium. I have been wearing a ML for close to 12-15 years so I’m really curious how this will fit.

The other part of this update is around durability which I know everyone is curious about. I’m going to see which glove wears down faster. A glove that is slightly too big should wear faster than a perfectly fit glove.

Now for the final piece. The customer service. It took 2 photos and a couple emails back and forth and Kerry got the glove out same day at 6:00pm EST. I was really impressed and figured it would be out sometime tomorrow afternoon. Huge bonus points there.

Will update everyone once I get the new size in.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop gang. We anxiously await the results. The Sussex is a departure for Red Rooster. We normally pride ourselves on the durability of our gloves: they are built to last (8-10 rounds). Whereas - The Sussex is built for feel. So, we are expecting The Sussex to feel amazing on the first tee - and especially the first round. But we would expect The Sussex to stretch out quickly, get slippery fast - and generally wear through after 3-5 rounds. We wish we could have our cake and eat it too. Thanks for letting us follow along!

I can say that I am a 27 holes in using the Sussex and it does feel just as good from the start when I put it on. I have taken optimal care of it, however I do expect that for me the glove will be on the longer end of that expected life span.

@Red Rooster Golf in your experience how much does grip type have to do with durability?

I am also 27 holes in with the first Sussex glove with comfort and no apparent change to feel and proportions.  Took these photos after finishing playing 18 holes and had presence of mind to capture the club grips that the glove gripped for all holes so far.  And the 18 holes was such a cold day the glove was not removed from gloving at the vehicle to removing returning to the vehicle.  So much for that part of the test for the first glove (and to be honest it really takes effort for me to remember to unglove and reglove for every shot and might be part of what gave me more swings in the 9 hole day with disruption to my practiced routine).

@Red Rooster Golf my grip is just enough to hang onto the club securely and hoping others with more variable grips can address the effect of grip type and condition of grips for age and design on the glove durability.  These grips are all original with the clubs and in undamaged and gently worn condition.  They are not slippery and have a nice secure feel in the hands.

Great stuff, Derek! The Sussex looks like it's holding up well so far. I like the look of it, very minimalistic with the white and just the Red Rooster logo, I find it to be very classy. Of course I'm saying that and really like a lot of the other offerings they have like the Comb, the Saddle, and the Brahma.

Awesome, Derek! I think this is exactly what people are hoping to see. Agree with @sirchunksalot on the look. The all white with the stand alone red rooster logo is a classic look.

I also use the Kirkland. Impossible to beat for the price, and I agree with your estimate on their durability. I’ve been curious about the RR, but would want a model that is meant to be more durable.

Sorry I have a bit absent. All the normal excuses Work, Life, baseball.

I am heading out for my first round today with a 10:49 tee time at Stone Creek GC. Tomorrow I am playing at my brother in laws course Orchard Hills CC and again on Wednesday at Pumpkin Ridge GC Ghost Creek. Hopefully I can remember to get some pictures of the glove and come on here and give a little up on Monday. I do have a board meeting Monday night, so We shall see.

Also hoping to get out next weekend but that means getting a TON done around the house.

The weather here is a nice day today high 70's sunshine and sunscreen needed. Tomorrow is mid 60's & cloudy no rain in the forecast yet. Wednesday is mid to high 60's cloudy no rain, but there is rain for Thursday. I say that as the forecast can change hourly.

Have a great weekend folks.

This test has been a great deal of fun.

The Sussex has been a very comfortable and soft glove to play with. I have played well while wearing it too.  Do you believe in coincidences?

i plan to play this week and will have more data for the testing.  Red Rooster has impressed me thus far.

Working at getting better ... and very slowly getting there.

Should have my new size early this week and my thought is that I will have a completely different outlook on the performance if it ends up being the right size. I have noticed with the current ML, some stretching in the fingers after about 36 holes (as expected) and my normal wear spot is starting to ever so slightly show, bottom right of palm. Most of the rounds have been played in dry conditions with the temp ranging from 55-72.

I will have more updates on the testing post coming soon surrounding the type of grips I use in my clubs along with my actual grip style.

I have been sick the last few days so unfortunately haven’t been able to get out to play but the timing works out as we’ve had rain since Friday.

I have 36 holes in with one glove. I have used it as I would any other glove. To me it is holding up just fine, a little dirty, slight wearing but nothing of concern to me. My two rounds were not good golf, it is not the gloves fault. The feels good on my hand and once on I do not have to fiddle with re-adjusting or moving the finger tips around.

I got one picture after the first round and I'll take a second one hopefully today while I'm trying to look busy to my wife.

This is a photo of my Red Rooster Sussex glove with 9 rounds on it.  Durability seems to be good at this point, and is still providing good grip.

3 full 18 hole rounds and one 9 hole round with back to back 18 hole rounds in rain.

What made this round a wetter experience for Mr. Sussex glove was wind catching underneath the large golf umbrella attached to the handle mount umbrella holder while hitting a par 5 third shot onto the 14th green.  The umbrella was on its first use after a repair and it needs repairing again.  In the process of righting the push cart with golf bag attached and umbrella looking sad, the glove was removed too soon and a fiberglass rod in the umbrella had splintered giving me something to remember the moment with in my palm - should have left the glove on for protection.  Then did put the glove on to gather the umbrella to stow it and deploy my second umbrella (yes I carry two, a true sailor always has redundancy in every system, right @Lacassem?)  So wet glove more than before.

Put into the box for drying though not looking really well worn for 63 holes of play.  Still wearing glove #1 and, after the first warm day trying to remember to remove it after every shot, it has been worn from first tee to last cup as is my habit (so there).
