That's some great feedback. Would be curious if on a range, or even a top golf type.place, if the same difference in yardage would occur.

That is what I want to do and also take it to the course but mother nation is not allowing me to do. I went to an indoor golf facility today but I could not set the MEVO, but from the 8i and PW, there was a difference of +/- 3 to 5 yards. I would have to do a bracket/stand to level the MEVO with the hitting mat, but believe me, I am already making it in my mind 😂

Finally edited my video. Had a hiccup with my computer at work today unfortunately. I use MOVAVI video editor and its fantastic but when I downloaded the new program I signed in and have the licenses for it but for some reason I am getting the watermark when I download the video...So please bare with me on this one, future ones will not have this.

As for the session I left the video running and just kind of talked all the way through but to save you from the 2 hours of talk and whack f*@$ I dwindled it down to 5 minutes!

I did a full warmup range session hitting 9/8/5/4 irons and then hit 18 holes.

I am noticing myself going left which seems accurate with the cold, I am not very smooth in this video at all. Had a couple over compensations and pushes right (you will see on the last swing with my 4 iron before the round). All said I am not seeing any terrible readings, all seem to make sense. On top of that I had 0 missed shots and I had over 120 shots here.

Most of my other reviews did not do to many videos so bare with me as I hope to get a little more savvy with this!

Great post!! Bro I can wait to see what else you will bring to this progression

Great stuff there Mark! I think you did a great job for the first video and I loved the fact you were prepping with the forum glove.

@LuisddavilaI really love the amount of information in your post, you're really diving deep and it's interesting to see the differences in the balls you're using. It's crazy to see the variation in distances depending on the set up and I'll try to remember to set it at 6 feet the next time I can get out and hit.

It's been wet and cold here, so I apologize for the lack of testing this week. I'm hoping it'll be nice enough Sunday that I can get out with the net and try it there.

1/2 First Session

During this session I decided to set the MEVO 6 feet from the ball with my PW and my 8I with regular golf balls. Then set it to 7 feet from the ball and used my PW with regular, range, and regular with metallic dot balls. I placed tapes on the floor for the mat and MEVO placement. After changing my hitting mat, I realized that the mat was at least 1/2” above the MEVO so I placed a piece of wood to ensure that the device was leveled with my hitting surface.

Average Data

image.png.f5a7629f336e0e9beb8d137e823f2aee.png

6 Feet Setting

Data from the PW, after 10 shots my carry average was 126.9 yards (which is the actual yardage that I hit this club) and an average of 100.2 mph ball speed. My longest carry was 141.1 yards with a 102.3 mph ball speed.

image8.jpeg.1a76d6904b825830ff383774f4a94378.jpeg

Data from the 8I, after 10 shots my carry average was 150.42 yards (which is the actual yardage that I hit this club) and an average of 109.6 mph ball speed. My longest carry was 165.3 yards (lucky first hit) with a 116.1 mph ball speed.

image7.jpeg.79e41e6fc27180840636c6e4d8405115.jpeg

7 Feet Setting

As you know from my previous post, I had some maintenance issues during my session because my impact net broke, but I was able to hit balls with this setting with three different types of balls: regular, range, and with metallic dot. Unfortunately, I was only able to use the PW and not gather data from my 8I so I could compare both settings.

PW with Standard Golf Ball: Average distance after 5 shots was 138.1 yards (I can live with that 😆) and an average of 107.1 mph ball speed. My longest carry was 157.7 yards (I want to know how I was able to hit that distance haha) with a 112.1 mph ball speed.

image4.jpeg.8a632e008f7d2f7ee5331bf29087b0c9.jpeg

PW with Range Golf Ball: Average distance after 5 shots was 125.1 yards and an average of 98.78 mph ball speed. My longest carry was 132.2 yards with a 98.3 mph ball speed.

image5.jpeg.83c0f71809eefe7a04c10b9253a80ef7.jpeg

PW with Standard Golf Ball (Metallic Dot): Average distance after 4 shots was 133.3 yards and an average of 103.2 mph ball speed. My longest carry was 142.8 yards with a 106.2 mph ball speed.

image6.jpeg.427d2ac7812bd8c0a392e3be27421115.jpeg

I noticed a difference of 11.2 yards from the different settings. The 7 feet setting showed longer distance and higher ball speed with standard golf ball. Also, as you can see from the pictures the different type of balls also impacted the data of my shots. The question, which is the more accurate data? Not sure, but I am planning to take the MEVO to an indoor golf facility with other technology (Trackman or TruGolf) and compare the difference between both to see the MEVO’s accuracy. In addition, I realized from the pictures that I had too much lighting over the MEVO, and that might have impact on getting more accurate data.

As prior testers mentioned, the MEVO does not give you ball trajectory (whether it goes left, right, or straight) or graphics for ball dispersion. But, from the data you get Smash Factor, which is the ball speed divided by the club speed. In the user manual it is explained that “it indicates the quality of the strike. Higher club speed does not necessarily mean higher ball speed. Striking in the “sweet” spot of the club – the higher the ratio, the better the strike”. Not a “visual” representation, but at least you get an idea if you are hitting good shots based on the numbers.

From the 6 Feet my longest 8I (165.3 yards) had a smash ratio of 1.29 (higher ratio as well) and my PW (141.1 yards) had a 1.16 smash ratio. My higher smash ratio with PW was 1.20 (137.9 yards)

image0.jpeg.96e1eb9be348b2dd7c48141df41ea82a.jpeg

From the 7 Feet regular ball PW longest carry (157.7) 🤯 had a smash ratio of 1.25, range ball longest carry (132.2) had a smash ratio of 1.11, and standard ball with metallic dot longest carry (142.8) had a smash ratio of 1.24). One thing that I noticed was that my longest carries did not have a high apex height (less than 100 feet), which I would say it is very accurate as I tend to hit low shots most of the time.

@sirchunksalot same here brother and weather is not looking great next week. In addition that last couple of weeks I was dealing with the unit’s change of command and this week with post closure and making sure that I cover all the bases to ensure soldiers and families are safe.

That is why I decided to dive in to small details within the collected data to see how those numbers impact our golf game positively. I hope to take the MEVO to the course and compare its data with my Garmin watch.

As I mentioned yesterday, I went to the indoor golf place here but I was not able to set the MEVO. From some of the shots, the data was pretty close and I was able to see some similar data. So lets see what happens this week.

Introduction:

I want to first say thanks to MGS and FlightScope for this incredible opportunity.  My name is Josh (hence the screen name) and I am out of Austin, Texas.  Born and raised.  I got involved in this great community just by chance, looking through some articles and it has been amazing.  Just about everyone on here has been helpful, knowledgeable and most of all kind.  In today’s social media world, it’s a pleasant surprise.

IMG_20231028_094133.jpg.1092c78bfaf7aa06a3a70d8482037d4d.jpg

I live in a small lakeside golf course community just north of Austin.  I am married and have two small children.  My seven-year-old son has shown some interest in golf, but he really enjoys going out on the course and just hanging out with me and filling the divots.  My almost three-year-old daughter (going on 21) loves to ride in the “tart tart” and trying to hit the golf ball like daddy.

20231031_175751.jpg.d9981ddd3fae1299dc1526596dab911e.jpg20231103_100011.jpg.00164e0b8e7c323e30d22a87116e61b9.jpg

For work, my wife and I are both in real estate.  I made the decision almost 4 years ago to pursue this career in order to have more time with my kids while they are young.  Leaving behind a great career in construction was a major decision but one that I don’t regret for a second.

I started playing golf about 20 years ago in a small town because some co-workers asked me to play.  Being a lefty, I didn’t have any clubs but one of the guys that worked in the clubhouse was a lefty and had an extra set that he gave me to play with.  They were the Wilson Staff Deep Red Tour irons.  I was instantly hooked by the challenge and the opportunity to get better.   I would play three or four times a week and was down to a 3-handicap playing with the local “noon” group.  My best round was a 2 under 70 with a birdie on 9 and 18 and I remember all the old guys throwing a fit because I was moving back to Austin, and they wouldn’t be able to win their money back.  It didn’t matter that they had taken my money for years, so I declined the few bucks and had them sign the scorecard.  Once back in Austin, golf eluded me for a number of years, only playing occasionally when I would get the opportunity, but I knew I wanted to get back to the game.

DeepRedTourIrons.jpg.78a714b784fa109f245c8eef2893cfe3.jpg

Fast forward to this past year and a half, I get to play or practice golf just about every day and my handicap is down to a 5.  If you have seen my posts or thread about my goals and pursuit of earning the coveted “break 70” badge, you also know my struggles with the driver.

IMG_20231028_094130.jpg.91de4972ba1cf52bfeda395b81fd2474.jpg

This brings me to the Mevo testing.

FlightScope’s tagline states: Practice with purpose using FlightScope Mevo – an accurate, portable, and affordable launch monitor that gives golfers performance data they can trust.

Can a sub $500 launch monitor really improve my game?

Can it help me finally stop hating my driver?

I will be equipping the Mevo with the iPad app and utilizing it primarily at the range but also have the net set up in the backyard to do testing.

Mevo offers 8 data parameters that I will be collecting data from on day one until the testing is complete in order to see if I can take this information and make the necessary changes to my swing to improve my numbers.

Carry Distance, Spin Rate, Club Speed, Ball Speed, Vertical Launch, Smash Factor, Apex Height, Flight Time

For testing purposes, I will be using 3 clubs and the lucky participants are, PW, 7I, and Driver.

Mevo doesn’t just offer data, they also offer skills challenges so that you can make practicing fun.

FS PGA & LPGA Challenge – Compare your stats to the latest stats of the pros. (This one scares me)

FS Long Drive Challenge – What will this look like at the beginning vs the end of the test?

FS Range Challenge – All about distance control and makes for a fun practice round.

If there are particular things that you want to know or see tested, please leave a comment or shoot me a message.

First Impressions

When the UPS guy showed up at the house, we were expecting two packages.  The Mevo and the wife's watch.

20231221_075859.jpg.dd9e788b75aff01f44a21419255e5188.jpg

I was shocked that the watch box was twice the size of the Mevo.  I started to wonder what was actually sent to me.

20231221_143052.jpg.c5049f3c469df7bad5628b6f7a8f4c26.jpg

Upon opening the box, the first thing I saw was high quality packaging.  The box is magnetic, and the presentation was great!

20231221_143330.jpg.429c7b318231a526e1e1b2490538c06c.jpg

It comes with a charging cord, quickstart quide, protective pouch and metallic dots.

P1000828.JPG.5977f364e988ab3cdc9e4b6c2296847a.JPG

It is amazing that such a small unit can pack so much data and I am excited to see how accurate it will be and how it can improve my game.

P1000827.JPG.eabead2166b784ff5352a5724e408026.JPG

I give it an A+ for my initial impression.

Conclusion:

Because this is an ongoing test, I will save the full review of the Mevo until all tests have been completed but for now, here are my thoughts.

FlightScope has accomplished their tagline with the Mevo, and being priced at just under $500 with no yearly fee, it makes it one of the cheapest launch monitors out on the market today.  I found that the Mevo was extremely accurate with the data points that it offers.  Being able to easily take it to the range, on the course or at home hitting into a net and have the ability to collect data that is valuable.  I was able to make sure that my bag is dialed in with the correct distances as well as figure out any gaps in my bag.  I had the ability to play the Range Competition that will let you dial in specific distances and repeat your swing all while playing a game.  I could test my numbers to the numbers of PGA professionals and even attempt a Long Drive Competition.

While the Mevo accomplishes what I believe they set out to do in this price point, I do think it has a few things that I would have liked to have seen.  It was missing dispersion and while most of my testing was at the driving range for me to see ball flight, hitting in to a net, you would miss that data for truly improving ball flight and ball striking.  I also wish that it had some type of simulator included with it.  Some of the other LM out there in similar price categories offer the ability to play rounds.  I think many people get launch monitors to practice during the cold months where outside golf is not available and it is an item with the Mevo that I think brings some of the value down.

Overall, the Mevo is an accurate unit and one that can really improve your golf game.  It’s price point and portability make it a must have for anyone wanting to enter the launch monitor world on a budget and with no yearly fees.  I am looking forward to testing out the Mevo+ and seeing how the additional data points, including the face impact and pro package can improve my golf game.

Great info!! @Josh Parker I cannot wait to see all the great things that MEVO+ can bring to your golf game

@Lacassem and @GolfSpy_BNG

Have either of yall tried connecting the E6 to the Mevo+?

Mine seems to be having issues with not finding the LM in E6.  I'm running it on iPad.  Waiting on a call from tech support and have looked thru threads and it seems to be an issue some have dealt with.

Took it to the range this morning in 30 degrees weather to make sure set up and tracking were completed and built a little block for it to set on. It worked great.  I didn't make many swings due to the cold weather but I am looking forward to getting it back out to the range.

New net shows up Monday and will have a great spot to test as well.

I’m hoping to connect it tonight as I didn’t have a ton of time before needing to get back to work. My big issue may be not having great cell service in my FIL shed.

Cell service shouldn't be an issue. A few suggestions I read said turn off cell service.

Still waiting on a call from tech support for actual advice/answers.

I assumed I needed cell service or WiFi and my FIL has zero internet on his acreage.

@Josh Parker @Lacassem are either of you having a problem connecting the plus?  It seems I have to manually connect it whereas the mevo was automatically done

I did at the beginning and then it started to connect after the first few times. I'm guessing it's because the mevo was originally connected.

It has definitely been a little bigger learning curve.

same here brother and weather is not looking great next week.

I'm in the same boat as you, it's been freezing here the last couple of days and today I don't think the wind chills got out of the teens. Tomorrow isn't looking great, either but I do see a bit of hope for either Monday or Tuesday when we're going to see highs in the 50's. It's usually not this bad in the South this time of years, but it's been a doozy lately.

I did get to use the battery I picked up to charge the Mevo and it did a wonderful job.

I had the same issue. I connected the mevo+ to my phone and then tried it on my friends tablet. Problem was it was trying to connect to my phone instead of the tablet still.

have you connected it to another device besides the iPad?

I have not. I'm going to call Monday to tech support and see what they say. I'll mess around with it tomorrow.

I can't use my phone because I have android.
