Putting a 350 shaft in a 335 driver head?

Recently, I aquired a Project X 5.0 graphite shaft (made for Callaway)....the same shaft that's in my Cally FTiz Driver.

 

As I hit this baby so straight, I wanted to try it on some other clubs in my garage.

 

I asked the local "shop" in Tampa to replace the shaft and was informed that it was a 350 and the Apollo 55g shaft in my current Powerbilt WMD driver was a 335.

 

The tech said that he could make it fit, but sometimes the shaft will break. As I only have an 87-94 mph swing speed I said go ahead. I really don't think my slow SS will snap it.

 

Has anyone tried this before?

I have tried it on a shaft that I didn't care if it broke or not (it was a backup and I just wanted to try it in a different head).............it broke after about 5 hits. I have a SS of 118, so that could have something to do with it.

Well, I am off to the driving range after work to test it out.

 

I also have to get my iron grips replaced with the sweet deal I got off ebay.....8 Black Widow grips shipped to me for $18.06.

 

Will let you know if it works......will prob play tomorrow with 2 drivers.....just in case.

It might fit in there, but it is a bad idea. It will most likely break no matter how slow you swing.

I do it all the time on irons, but then you're really only tapering the last 3/4" or so. Never tried it with a driver where you are sanding through the first couple layers all the way up the hosel. I'd assume breaking would depend on how the shaft is wrapped/built with the carbon.

I just recently put a 335 graphite shaft into my Calloway Diablo Octane (350) and it has worked out great. I assume your builder will be using a shim of some sort, so breaking your shaft shouldn't be an issue. I actually didn't have any brass shims, so I used mesh fiberglass tape around the tip of the shaft to create a nice fit and then glued it in like normal. It was the first time I have tried this, but I will be using this method from now on. Much cheaper than sending it to a builder, and after 10 rounds I have had zero problems.

I watched the Builder......he lightly sanded the tip of the shaft, then took a little off the driver head side until they matched.

 

 

Was gonna test it this afternoon, but my wife had a kidney stone attack so I am at home. I may be able to sneak out later.

I snuck out for a bit and hit a small bucket of balls.

 

Warmed up with my other Powerbilt AFO Driver, then switched to the WMD with the new PX 5.0 shaft.

 

 

Started with some half and 3/4 swings and when they flew straight I decided to launch a couple.....Wow!....they got the distance and were absolutely straight....just like the shaft in my Cally FTiz, but the launch was longer.

 

I'll use it tomorrow in my Saturday game....

Your builder is smart but wishy washy. I would have simply enlarged the hosel to fit the shaft. The difference between the 335 and the 350 is miniscule and the hosel can take the loss much better than any shaft. Of course, you would have had to consider the Driver head lost for resale purposes, but when you think about automatic obsolescence you don't lose much, if at all.

I was a little leary of swinging it at first, but once i built up some confidence, i let her rip (LOL 87 mph SS) and experienced some very nice long drives.

 

The trajectory was low to mid so I got a lot of roll. Most were straight down the fairway and generally 10 to 20 yards farther than my Cally FT.

 

Although I started pulling them down the left side....resulted from my swing, not the shaft or driver head.

 

It appears that my modified Powerbilt will stay in the bag for awhile.

Reasonably true, .015 mm I think, and much more patient than I would be. I sometimes think the larger diameter tip could lead to a less tip active shaft but I truly have no way of proving it one way or the other. You seem to indicate what would be expectable in a less tip active shaft, which is lower flight, less carry and more roll. However there really are no rules I am aware of with such things so leave my ideas in the unproven and untested bin. I also expect that if ever you want more carry and a higher flight, you can go back to the .335 tip with only a very slightly loose fit that will not be noticeable once epoxied.

My brother has a Retail and Repair shop at Bloomingdale Golfers Club.
