anti slice

Recommended Posts

I'm a senior playing the game only three years. My slice is getting better with practice. I've seen a product called Power Straight that is supposed to help correct a slice. It's applied before a round of golf and is supposed to last the full round. Does anyone know if this product works?

Basically, it's an anti-friction coating applied to the club face to reduce the effects of sidespin.

It breaks the rules of golf and it won't cure your swing fault.

A lesson or two with a pro is completely legal and the knowledge you gain will last a lifetime. A better investment if you ask me.

Welcome zglass!

I'm a super senior and have been playing for 24 years.  The first 3 years I sliced the ball, then decided I really couldn't teach myself the game and if I wanted to keep playing I had to take lessons.  It took awhile because I had to "unlearn" everything I taught myself.  I still take lessons periodically as refreshers because some old habits still try to creep into my swing.  See a pro and take lessons; and the sooner the better.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Hi, zglass.  I'm a super-senior that just completed season number fifty-six

A slice is the result of an outside-in swing which is what comes natural to most beginners.

Most of us needed a little bit of help learning  to swing inside out, but once we did, it became ingrained and we started fighting blocks instead.  (This game ain't easy.  If you want easy, recreate with a recliner and a remote.)

A few lessons won't hurt one bit.  If possible, go to someone who's helped someone you know.  LPGA teaching pros are always good because if they weren't successful, they wouldn't have jobs. No good old boy network for them.  Besides, hanging out with young broads is more pleasant anyway.

Love the post zglass. I've heard of "greasing" the club face but it's mostly been referred to as a joke. I didn't know some company actually made such a specific use product. What happened to ChapStick? LOL So I went over to the Power Straight website to have a look. As I clicked around looking/reading I keep laughing and thinking of jokes and such. First I can't imagine anyone buying this stuff. Maybe for a gag gift or something. In fact, Power Straight was declared USA Today's, "What's hot in golf" product of the week! Doesn't say what week that might have been. But who cares anyway as long as that damn slice gets cured. Right? LOL I loved watching the Pro from N.M. State University proclaim the wonders of Power Straight. Now let me ask you? What kind of "Pro" would want to rep this product? Do they use it at NMSU?

OK...  that's enough. But I want to caution everyone playing golf in N.M. to be on the look-out for ole Pete Sierra should he walk up looking for a game. I think he considers himself a "high stakes" gambler. Anyway ole Pete says...

“Every high-stakes golf gambler that I've ever known has greased their club to reduce friction. The fact that this product was specifically designed for golf is obvious. It works better than any substance I have ever tried.”  Hmmmm? Better than ChapStick Pete? Cha-ching. $$$ LMAO

Lots of "Pros" out there Blade.  We have tons of them on the ranges in Florida trying to hawk innocent students.  I think this would be true in any warm weather, destination type of place.

LOL This brings back memories. Back in the 60s they had a product called No Slice that was basically grease in a aerosol can about the size of a small can of WD-40. We actually sold it. now this is embarrassing but my old man was the one who got the credit for figguring out Vaseline would do the same thing and the grease thing was began. All the gamblers used it as "equipment" in those days. I can remember sometimes club selection went something like this " you reckon I need to hit a wet 5 iron or dry 4 iron?" I never used the stuff myself because in those days I had a hooking issue anyhow. I got accused of it one time because I could hit a low stinger barrel hook 1 iron that would run forever. In fact in those days it was the only club I could control the hook on. All the gamblers hung out at our course and we sold Vaseline in the counter along with legal golf equipment. Normal saying around there "oh yeah let me get a dozen Titleists and a jar of Vaselene."  Man I hated that stuff because I had to clean the carts and those guys would put a glob on the fender with a popsickle stick in it to put on their clubs. In the summer that crap would melt and run down the side of the carts what a mess. A lot of courses would put up signs "No Grease on Carts Please". The other down fall I saw in latter years was that on Persimmon and even wood laminate drivers continued use of grease would soak into the wood after a while and ruin a club. Many a classic M-85 Macgregor driver was ruined by the stuff. Later on when I first started doing restrorations I would literally bake the stuff out in a oven but sometimes it would rot the wood so bad that it would literally rot and degradate. I remember that some guys got caught using Chap Stick in high school matches and some guys got caught using it in the City Am one year. I can remember Charlotte was known as the grease or Vaseline capital of the world at one time. The first time I went to Florida on the minis and those guys found out I was from Charlotte the first thing that was said to me was "we do NOT use grease down here". I actually got called to the tour director's cart before my first event on that no joke. My old man in later years said he wished he had kept his mouth shut to begin with but heck he used it too sometimes in self defense after all every one else was and it was an unfair advantage. I hated the crap so bad if you played with me it was DRY and straight up or I did not play. One of the reasons I went to Florida for a while it was dry and grease free in the gambling matches too. Like I said I hated the stuff still do especially when someone even now finds an old persimmon driver and wants it restored with the corners of the face half rotted off from that crap

The classic Eye-O-Matics had linen fiber, not cycolac, insets.  Imagine ruining one of those beauties with Vasoline.

Insane.

Yep I loved those linen fabric inserts. Most old school club maker repair guys kept what I called sticks of that stuff because a lot of guys like me loved it over the cycolac inserts. I loved Power Bilt persimmon drivers in those days just did not like the inserts. I remember I ordered a brand new driver from H&B and when it came the first place it went to was  Mr. Harold Dale's shop in Charlotte to have a linen fabric insert put in.  I had all my persimmons done like that except one Power Bilt that had the cycolac insert with the 3 pins in it. For some reason I hit that thing good like it was and never had it "modified". Actually sometimes you will find a classic Eye O Matic with a cycolac insert. More than likely it was a victim of the "grease age" and had the insert replaced at some point. Those linen fiber inserts did not last more than a year when grease was used. Nifty glad you posted and someone else besides me remembers those old inserts

Wow, what kind of "Pro" would sacrifice all his credibility by endorsing a product made for the express purpose of cheating and then make such a statement? He has no business getting paid for teaching golf. Ridiculous....

The same kind of ones that would endorse some of those junk "miracle" clubs or some of those  "swing contraption things" that looks like a restraint system in a fighter plane. It is all about $$$$$$ this day in time ethics be dammed

OH how true you speak there Rev-- we have our share of them too down here or up here for you and Fozzy. The late J.P. Barnum once remarked "there is a sucker born every minute" and that is so true in the golf business these days

Do you love dogs, Dhuck Whooker? I love dogs.

Canis lupus familiaris (the domestic dog--all breeds), a sub-species of canis lupus (the gray wolf), is believed by science to have actually created itself as a species specifically to be a companion for homo sapiens.

After only thirty generations of successful domesticity, the gray wolf's dna literally turns into dog dna. That's very fast evolution for a highly evolved organism.

(A dog will look you directly in the eye without tension.  A wild animal will not.)

More than 100,000 years ago, some very intelligent gray wolves discovered that if they acted friendly toward the cavemen, they could sleep in warm caves and eat cooked meat. It was a way more comfortable style of living than trying to eat the cavemen.

Hence, the domestic dog, inventor of itself just to be our friend.

Yes, N.N.  I love that dog, that is Brody the Dog, he loves us and the food on our plates equally.  Ten years ago,  my wife found him at a rescue shelter, he barked the loudest. He came home and the first night he found the Alpha Dog, yours truly, in bed watching hockey and sat right on my chest.  I thought I was about to be violated but no he just wanted to lick my face.   Smart dog.  He did not descend from royalty for sure and I doubt his parents were ever married.  The nice word is beagle-mix, but really he is 100% mutt.

Respectfully,
DHUCK WHOOKER
