  1. @GetoffmylawnMy experience with the Tour BX is the same as @RDel90: I couldn’t get the ball to check around the green. Too much roll out; but I loved this ball off the tee and from the fairway from 185 and out. Good wind ball too. CSxls, Snell Mtbx, and Maxfli Tour X would all be balls I’d recommend you try: with the Mtbx behaving like a cheaper tour BX, and the maxfli behaving very similarly to a prov1x as far as ball flight and spin, imo.

  2. @JFish350 is 108 the top end of your driver swing? Figure out how fast you can swing and hit the center of the face, and then ramp the swing speed back up. As stated numerous times already, lessons with an instructor that speaks your swing language will be worth more than anecdotal advice or new equipment. If you’ve plateaued(your handicap isn’t going down anymore) swing lessons are the easiest way to break thru. I’m a firm believer in the possibility of getting yourself down to the 10-12 range thru course management, short game practice, shelving the driver, etc. But to be a low single digit golfer the driver has to be a weapon/asset, not a liability. Your speed should see you carrying the ball at least 255 at sea level, the right launch characteristics(how you deliver the club) should get you to 270 carry.

  3. My shape has evolved as I’ve improved, but I tend to agree with @RickyBobby_PR. As a mid handicap I played a fade that would veer into a slice when not striking it well. Since I’ve broken into single digits, my practice has been solely focused on hitting draws, driver to wedge. Does that mean I hit draws when I play? Sometimes yes, but really what all that practice does is keep me hitting nice, tight, 3 yards cuts. For me, the harder I swing, the more my natural shape comes out. If I’m going to swing my driver all-out, I’m going to set up for a fade. If I need a draw, or I need to play away from the right side, I’m going to my stock controlled swing which allows me to hit a draw.

I’m a firm believer that working on whatever is the opposite of your dominant shape will help you hit straighter, more on-target shots.

  4. I can’t do anything but hook a hybrid off the planet. My U-505 2 iron is great on tight par 4’s, doglegs, and in windy conditions. Some days the driver isn’t cooperating, and the 2-iron is a more accurate club for me than my 3 wood. Being relatively new to golf I can’t comment on how hard it was to hit a traditional 2 iron, but my driving iron is as forgiving as my 5 iron, imo.

  5. @mr.hicksta is it more that you’re getting stuck on the way back or just making what I call a “fake turn” that’s really all arms? When I’m going bad, it is almost always due to me having too much wrist in the takeaway, which puts my arms at the top of the backswing before I’ve had a chance to complete my turn. I usually don’t realize I’ve done it until the ball starts right and moves farther right.  Two thoughts that have unlocked my swing and freed me up mentally are.

    1) Take your time on the way back: I’m definitely on the slow side during takeaway, not Sungjae slow, but definitely on the deliberate side.

    2) Stop thinking about “hitting the ball” or “putting a good swing on it” and instead simply think about your target and sending the ball to it. There’s a whole thread here on this subject that really helped me.

Keep swinging and you’ll find it!

  6. Back to playing well after 6 weeks or so in the wilderness that is implementing swing changes/thoughts after my 1st lesson of the season. 4 straight rounds in the 70’s, including yesterday at Coral Canyon. Literally can’t remember a time where I was hitting driver better…. Bali hai tomorrow will be a good test…

With Snell limiting purchases, I decided to try a few other balls out.  I tried out Srixon XV and Bridgestone RB.  Both balls performed well for my game...I did like the Bridgestone better off the tee.  I had plans to try the Srixon XV Diamond, but I decided to give the Maxfli a go first.  Went with the Tour X as it was likely closer to the Snell MTB-X that I've been playing for the last 3 years.  Maxfli Tour X is my new gamer. I like everything about this ball.  For my swing, the ball fit me well....flight is good, distance off the tee and irons is good, spin is great off both irons and wedges.  The lower price over similar balls is an added bonus.

My thoughts exactly: didn’t think any ball could compete with Snell on performance and price, but I was wrong. Maxfli Tour X is my new gamer as well.

  8. I’m about 150 rounds in with arccos: put me in the “worth it” camp. Perception of my game vs the reality of my game are vastly different. I always considered myself(3 hndcp) a strong iron player and putter, and really bad with the driver. Across shows me that I lose all my strokes on approach. Turns out I drive like a scratch golfer, and have a mid-low cap short game. My putting is average for a 3 handicap. Using data to focus my practice is worth the subscription to me. I also find the caddie feature useful when trying to play into the wind.

There's no one size fits all here answer. Grips are very personal. Alot of it is based on your hand size. Some if it is based on the action on the ball where someone who battles the left miss might like a larger grip. Theres many, many, valid reasons why one player might prefer a smaller or larger grip.

That being said, in my opinion, the explosion in midsize offerings is because a decent percentage of people grip the club incorrectly and a larger grip feels more comfortable and natural. For someone that runs the grip more through the palm of the hands and less through the fingers a standard grips feels too small. A larger grip is easier to hold with less pressure and feels better. I'd rather see the root of the problem addressed and the grip fixed, but if you are going to hold the club that way you probably do play better with midsize or +4 grips.

Agree 100%: once I fixed my grip, my old midsize grips (+2 wraps) felt ridiculous.
