Weather in your neck of the woods?

It was the coldest it's been this year down in SE TN, I woke up at 4 this morning and saw it was 18* out there. Almost made me glad I didn't go in to work today.

It looks like it's going to warm up a little as the week progresses but right now the 4 day weekend is looking wet.

11° here this morning and I thought that wasn't too bad. Better than -24°... If I stayed home from work because of temps I would never go in.

Cold, very cold around here, stay indoors cold except for a late afternoon grub hunt to Jersey Mike's yesterday.    3 seasoned gents were in line in front of me each wearing a Bill blue hoodie and a blue game overshirt inscribed with Allen.

I knew the Bills were coming to town for our Thanksgiving game and thought these guys are way overboard coming to town so early for the turkey game and wearing game gear to boot, but I didn't know the Bills were at Ford Field yesterday playing the Brownies due to snow in the Buffalo area.

They said their area got about 70 inches of snow and they came through Canada to see their team play.  Nice fans, easy to chat with, and still can't wrap my head around a 70-inch snow assault, never seen it before.

I couldn't imagine -24, that would be almost excruciating. I think the coldest it's ever been here was -16 in 1985 when I was 10.

I hated calling out, I don't like missing work, but my doctor said they were scheduling an ultrasound for a kidney stone today.

... Sometime in the 80's I had rehearsal and it was -83 in Chicago. Yup 83* below zero windchill. Obviously everyone was advised not to go outside. I started planning my departure that day. BTW, this was before cell phones and when I got to rehearsal there was a sign on the door "Rehearsal cancelled due to dangerous cold". It was a 3 block walk and one of my eyes froze shut when I blinked and thankfully saw on the news not to try and open it until I got indoors and thawed out naturally or I could have torn my eyelid off! 🥶

.... Just crazy weather. In '77 I was working at WZZD in Philly and thankfully the girl with the shift after me made it to the station before the serious snow started. Station was about 1/4 mile down it's own driveway and we got snowed in. Our cars disappeared beneath the snow and we had to trade off 6 hour shifts for 3 days til they could get a plow to clear the road/driveway. Ran out of coins and with no food we had to break in to the snack machine. Might sound great to a teenager but 3 days on chips and candy really sucked. Glad you had the equipment to conquer the massive amounts of snow!

Front loader arrived on the street just about sunrise and opened it up one bucket wide.  Much better than Snovember 2014 when a similar snowfall had us shoveled to the (nonexistent) street before it was similarly opened by a front loader 5 days after the storm passed.

1977 was delivering the Buffalo Evening News as the presses did not stop printing through that whole storm, we had to go out into those blustery conditions every afternoon once the papers were delivered.  Streets were down to frozen ice but snow was drifted to house height and some required climbing the drifts to slide down, duck under the porch roof and put the paper in the mailbox at the feet that was normally too high to look inside (and I am 6' or 72"/182cm).  Kept the house closed up with access to outdoors through the downwind attached garage door where all snowy clothing was removed, fireplace kept glowing with cherrywood smelled great, well stocked basement food shelves and vault size topload freezer with no loss of power made it just one great adventure.

January 1984 as member of NYARNG was activated to dig out South Buffalo streets socked in with up to 8 foot drifts in neighborhoods where there is no room to put snow from the streets.  12 hour shift commander so spent the whole event outdoors except for down time at the Armory.  Local news reporters came to find me for daily updates, awesome times to remember...

Guess what keeps me fit for shoveling?  That's right, GOLF! 🏌️‍♂️

I grew up in Western NY (Lockport), and lived in Lockport-Batavia-Rochester until age 31. I did lots of shoveling like that, except that our house sat more than 220 feet from the road and at the top of a hill. I lived through the winter of 1977 in WNY and got up every morning that winter at 3 AM to plow driveways, gas stations and small shopping center parking lots with my Jeep before going to work at 7:30.

Since 1981, I have lived first in NJ and now in Bucks County, PA. We have had a few brutal winters here (most notably 1983-84, 1986-87 1993, and 1996-97, plus one about 12 years ago (not sure if it was 2010 or 2011). Never got 77” of snow, but we got 34” in less than a day in January or February of 1997. Luckily, I had just purchased the first of two Subaru Outback wagons that I owned in late December of 1996, because my wife was an emergency services worker for NJ Transit and got called to come in to work at the command center outside of Trenton, NJ (about 15 miles from where we live) while that 34” of snow was still falling. After shoveling out, I immediately drove her there in the Outback. Of course, both NJ and PA Governors had declared states of emergency and ordered all non-emergency vehicles to stay off of the roads. I asked my wife “what if we get stopped?”, to which she replied that she would show them her ID and we would be fine. Then she said “just don’t get stopped or get stuck on the way back home”.

Since you were in the NYARNG, you may have known my late father, Doug Mael (same name as mine). You would probably have known him at Lt. Col. Mael. He died in July 1983 at age 60, but was still active in the Guard at that time.

My dad was a far better, and even more avid, golfer than I am, if that is possible. At his best, he played to a 2 handicap, and I never knew him to have a handicap index above 7 for 18 holes. What made that most remarkable is that he was essentially playing on one leg, as he lost the lower half of his left leg when he was wounded and captured by the Germans in WWII.

That was probably 1983. My sister got married in December 1983 in Minneapolis and as her oldest brother I was asked to “give her away in marriage” (a quaint old tradition) because my father had died earlier that year. We were in Minneapolis for about 7 days, and the temperature never got above -8* F that week. Several days during the week, temperatures were as low as -50 to -55*.

The name is not familiar to me and the NYARNG as big and diversified as it was and still is though smaller makes possibilities of paths not crossing.  I had been commissioned 2LT for one month in July 1983 so it is possible he knew of me depending on what and where he was assigned.  God bless your father for his dedication to serve and to you also for being part of the rock that every family is to someone in service, just as my son is to me.  I retired as LTC in 2011.

Your father sounds like many of my friends who are fellow graduates of the local PGA HOPE program that serves military members, with golf as a means to improve physical and mental health following service to nation.  The adaptive techniques taught and the positive supportive attitude of PGA Pros who work with us are key to drawing Veterans together with golf as the venue for open communication and wellbeing.  Some of our guys do get to your dad's level of handicap but my focus is different, it is to find my peaceful place that is there on every course as a place aside from all things connected to stress - and watching someone melt down over golf to me is just hilarious.

  • 2 weeks later...

Started snowing yesterday afternoon; woke up to this...

IMG_1722.jpeg.04eb1bd713b063b1542a489c3bbed598.jpeg

About 2 inches of powder and 27º at 9am.  My wife didn't even call the clubhouse to see if tee times were delayed.  🤣
