BIG STU
Damn.... you young guys are killing me! I used to be around the 170 mark with a 7 iron. Now..... it's my 150 - 155 club. I've noticed a "noticeable" loss of distance the past year or two. I play Mizuno irons. Trust me it gets worse--- I can remember when I used to hit that blade Macgregor 7 iron around 170 175. BIG STU
... To be fair BS, as I said my son carries his 7 iron 185 and more if he wants to really go after it. If he were hitting a Wilson Staff Fluid Feel 7 iron with a HT-100, he would only hit it 175 but much higher. It is impossible to make a full swing and hit that old balata ball hard as you can without it spinning excessively and ballooning. As you well know with balata balls and persimmon woods, we learned to control the ball first and add distance later. Today with the new ball that spins so much less off the tee it is exactly the opposite, hit it as far as possible first and learn to control it later. I can swing hard at any wedge with any modern ball and balloon it now. Had to show Bear the other day and this is sorta embarrassing. I only hit a 50* wedge about 105 or so (used to hit a 56 like that) Had a shot that required a 115 carry. Bear said aw hell you can stretch it some. I told him naah I cant. We were just messing around anyhow . I showed him with the 50* Cally BECU. I ballooned it high as a Philly Mick flop shot with a 64* only went 75 yards or so and I did not hit it fat. Took my PW and hit a little check up skipper with it. Now that little balloon shot can serve to my advantage. If I had been 85 or so yards out I would have hit the same shot with that 50 if I needed to stop it super quick or I could have taken the PM 56 and toe hit it a bit and stop it. All of this comes from screwing with wedges and practicing my short game a lot. I have always honed and practiced my short game most of my life. I also think there is some trickery involved with that PM wedge that I found by accident. I can hit the prettiest one hopper forward and spin back with it than I ever could with any other wedge including my beloved 588s. I found that little tidbit of a shot by accident dialing that wedge in. So I have been practicing it quite a bit. Saved my bacon Sunday afternoon because I did not have a good ball striking day as far as GIR with my irons. Which in the past was SOP "Stu Golf". robertson153
If we're talking average, it's about 180-185. At my course we have a par 3 that plays anywhere from 175-200 depending on which tees you're playing from and where they have them. With that being said Iï¸ believe Iï¸ could “hood†my 7i and “nut†one with perfect conditions 200. But then again my Nike VRS forged irons are GI irons that are a 1/2 a club jacked up.
