Graphite shafts in irons?

Sluggo42

Recommended Posts

Getting older, weaker, and joints and tendons etc aren't as strong

Wahhh!

Anyways, does anyone use graphite's shafts in your irons?

Do they absorb shock?

Are they too heavy?

Accurate?

I'm thinking about getting a new set of some more forgiving irons as I actually sold my MP64's

I'm using some nice older cavity backs on nippon 95's and they're not bad at all, but I want one of the new sets that go 30 yards longer (hehe), and maybe the graphite's are the ticket.

Those new Wilson C300 on graphite is cool

Graphite shafts these days are extremely good and golfers of all ages are using them. They are in some ways better than steel because the Graphite is easier to manipulate for a bunch of different profiles. They are as accurate if not more accurate than steel and yes they absorb shock. They come in various weights so one can easily find a light, heavy or something in between

I currently have graphites in my D200s and they feel great. No concerns with feel or dispersion.

Graphite all around for me too. Indeed it helps with shock and they are very light so I don't feel too beat-up after a round-especially in my left wrist with has limited motion after a long-ago injury...Try some, you may be very pleasantly surprised how good they are.

graphite today is much better than it was 10 years ago....look on tour...Snedeker, Kucher and Couples all play graphite in their irons.

I had Aerotech Steelfibers in a set and LOVED them.

I have UST Recoil graphite in my Cobra irons now and really like them as well....much smoother and easier on the joints

LOVE my UST Recoils! Tight dispersion and flight, lots of pop but with consistent carry numbers. And my wrists no longer hurt after a long practice session. Can't recommend them more highly.

I have aerotech's in mine

Love them. Had matrix studios in my Wilson C100's and loved them. A little extra pop, no noticeable dispersal issues. But they will cost more than 100 to reshaft a set with the graphite's we've mentioned.

You can get about any weight you'd like.

Yes. Graphite's in my irons. I shattered my left wrist and have a Steel plate, 13 screws & an inch of my hip in my left wrist. Graphite shafts definitely absorb a lot of the shock.

Agreed this is opening my eyes to graphite in irons. I had graphite in my irons 20 yrs ago and snapped the heads off 2 of them.

Steel ever since but not I'm starting to get interested on the possibility of how positive the change could be.

I would say that you didn't have the right ones if that were the case. However I think there's little doubt that there will be players whose swing type works better with steal.

When I was fit at the tour performance center five years ago the fitter estimated that 35 to 40 percent of regular tour guys would have graphite in a decade. We are half way there and already we are seeing more graphite on tour.

It is easier on the joints beyond a doubt

I tried graphite shafts a while ago, and flat out couldn't hit them.  They felt really floppy to me.  But...I know they've come a long way, and I know I need to try them again, especially as I get older.

I hear a lot of good things about the new graphite shafts, and you guys are just confirming it.

I always try to remember that I'm not good enough to get mad!

When my fitter grabbed the Aerotech shafts I was a little hesitant because I've never been into graphite shafts and didn't think they'd fit my swing. I don't have a high swing speed at 83mph (6 iron), but it's not exactly slow either. After testing, I found that it really comes down to the weight.. I definitely did not like the 80 gram shaft, but once I hit the 110 gram shaft, I didn't think twice about it being graphite.

Normally I'd agree that I didn't have the right ones, but fittings with the ones in the weight I needed bared this out. I went with Steelfiber for a bit, because of feel, and my GIR went down year-over-year by almost 25%. That's not good. I don't think anyone disputes the advantage for one's joints, but I have not seen a benefit other than that the numerous times I've gone through fittings.

I'm with you, I saw a noticeable increase in dispersion and no loss of distance when I had recoils in my irons.

According to staff at UST more and more younger players are putting Graphite in their clubs and the long term benefits are going to be there in their joints as a result.

I switched to graphite a short time ago. Main reason was the arthritis in my hands & fingers. Yes graphite does help with the less weight and shock.

For those on the fence out there who maybe think graphite may be "weak" compared to steel...I humbly submit this...

24-IN BROWN-OWYHEE R. SPRING 2009.jpg

Yes, this is a 24" 5# brown trout that I landed using a 7-1/2' 3-weight fly rod on an interesting little river just across the border from us in Oregon. I had no buisiness using a tiny little "buggy-whip" of a rod like this on that river, but at the time it was new and I really didn't think such unicorns existed except on magazine covers.

If a slender little tube of graphite like this could hold up to fighting a monster like this, then the graphites of today could certainly rival any steel shaft for sure.

BTW, I released this pig after the photo, fished up river for a bit and later came back to this exact same hole later in the day and caught him again!!! Damn, I need to fish more... ;)

For those on the fence out there who maybe think graphite may be "weak" compared to steel...I humbly submit this...

attachicon.gif24-IN BROWN-OWYHEE R.

Damn, I need to fish more... ;)

Nice one! I like busting out my little 3 weight because of how much more fun the battle is. Nothing quite this size, but a heck of a lot of fun either way.

Very nice. What test leader/tippet? 1.5#?

I used to stalk the small out of the way trout streams of the Northeast mostly with a 6' flyrod. I still have about 6-8 flyrods various lengths, my grandson has them now.

Edit;

I've got a fly fishing story from 30 years ago I need to put in Happy Thread soon.

Anyway graphite is definitely strong.

I changed shafts in my irons -- more flexible (due to injury/age) and lighter -- 70 grams.  I have hated them...feel like I am hitting with a noodle.  I retrieved an older set of Titleist 735 forged irons with steel "r" shafts (Nippon) -- and love them  Height and distance have returned along with feel and control.

Any thoughts?  Is there a tradeoff between weight and feel?

Yes, there is absolutely a significant "trade off" between weight and feel.

Also, changing to lighter weight iron shafts may effect a players swing shape,  swing plane, swing tempo and rhythm.

Light weight iron shafts have come along way during the past 10 years, and "feel" better than they ever did before (smoother, less harsh) but for a number of reasons they are not suitable for every player.

Ironically the shafts I replaced were graphite, but they were 120 grams...they were stiff and I needed more flexible.  Missing the distance from the 712 AP1's, but not the stiffness....
