PING Apologist #9
I was a MGS reviewer of the Snell MTB Red last season and found that while it was similar to the PV in many respects, it was short on performance in the wind. I found on independent testing that the Snell MTB Black was far superior in the wind and possesses a very close performance profile to the PV's for way less $. I currently play the Blacks exclusively after the tests and switched from the Bridgestone E6 softs. Below are a couple of links; one to the member review of the Snell MTB line and one to Snell's web page. chisag
... Dean Snell was instrumental in developing the ProV1 and I find his My Tour Black to be very similar in every way. BIG STU
I am a big fan of both the Snell and Vice balls. I have a source where I am getting them used grade A cheap. Both of those balls surpass the Pro V IMHO. I played titleist balls for many years even back to the balata days. Even if I had to buy new I would choose either the Vice or Snell balls. GB13
I really like the Snell Black. As @chisag said, Dean Snell worked on and developed the Pro V1, and he took all of his expertise and new ideas to Snell. In doing so, he ended up making a Tour level ball at half the price. NM01
All tour level balls are good. It’s about finding what works best for your game. Ball fittings are a great way to find this and several of the big names are doing them. the other way is on course testing
Glynn Taylor
TP5 hands down is the best ball I have played....Flies beautiful in the wind and for me is great around the green. For me its all about feel with a golf ball and the TP5 is exactly the ball I was after. Price wise you can probably pick the 2017 version fairly reasonable due to the new version coming out. Here in the UK its around £30 a box. Kind Regards Glynn Taylor Twitter: - glynntaylor
Kor.A.Door
Late to the party, but I will have +1 for Snell MTB Black. It is about as close to the ProV that you will find and the cost is much better. It is 31.99 shipped. If you buy in bulk it is cheaper. You can find others, but Snell is probably the best of the “lesser known” brands. TP5 May be good, but it’s still 40 a dozen. Jhigdon13
Are there any balls on the market, at any less cost, which have a similar feel on the putting green to the pro v1’s or pro v1x?It’s been mentioned in here a few times already, but I use Kirkland balls and they’re very comparable. I prefer a ball that allows me to spin it around the greens and the Kirkland does that. Also, I always had issues with ProVs getting cut up from my clubs during rounds. The Kirkland balls don’t seem to have that problem! MarieLaure
Bonjour all, Still a beginner, but I love the Vice Pro Soft. To be true, it might be the marketing from Vice that got me, because I prolly dont need such a ball with my super beginner level... jjfcpa
I've been playing Snell golf balls ever since they were released. Yesterday, I played 18 holes and after just 8 holes, I noticed some pretty good scuffs on the Snell MTB Black. Being picky about the ball I play, I grabbed a brand new one and within about 3 holes, I took a look at it and it had a cut in the outer cover. I'm 71 years old and a moderate swing speed. No way I could be doing this with my clubs. A little worried about the quality control on the MTB Black. I switched to a Bridgestone B RX for the rest of the round and found no markings on it at all when I finished.
JonMUSC08
these days golf ball fitting is becoming more and more popular just like a driver or iron fitting. The large diversity of balls will play differently for different players just like clubs. I know the kirland golf balls from Costco were so close to Pro V 1's that Titleist sued them. Since they had to change their formula, the new Costco Kirland balls are still good. Great for the money. The Taylormade TP5 is an excellent ball and is very similar to Titleist. Good enough that pro's are switching. storm319
Objectively from a basic construction, overall construction, and common performance standpoint, the closest for years has been the Srixon ZStar. The ZStar’s cover being TPU is a bit harder vs the ProV1’s cast thermoset urethane cover which to me has meant greater durability and negligible less spin on lower speed shots. KurtActual
I use the Costco Kirkland 3 piece. I opened the first sleeve of 3 on my garage bay "driving range" about 3 weeks ago. I have cycled the same 3 balls through hundreds of shots. From 56* wedges to 3i driving iron shots. I literally spend at least 30 minutes a day, 7 days a week hitting these balls. There is only one mark on any of the 3 balls, and it's from a miss-hit that hit the garage door guide. Not from impact from a club. These things are soft feeling, but insanely durable. golf is fun

GregB135
I did a bunch of searching this year after doing the e12 Speed test early in the season. Tried a box of ProVs, but they price themselves out of the bag. Side by side comparison of those to the Vice Pro and then the Vice Pro+ has come out with the Pro+ in the bag as the gamer. Best scores of the year have all been with the Pro+. Equal in every way, and better in some, than the ProV performance wise (for me) and a fair bit friendlier to the wallet.
