First Tee Nerves

So I'm not a huge sharing tips and teachings because well everyone is different and tips can cause people unintended issues. So saying that I will share a tip [emoji6].

As some of you may know my driving performance has been garbage as of late. Over the last few weeks I have maybe been getting 1-2 fairways a round trying different on the range and on the course with minimal success. I was even planning to play today and only hit irons off the tee since thats what it took to find a fairway.

This morning I came across a video TXG posted a video of Gareth Raflewski talking about minimizing your stress/anxiety on the first tee to help. It was surprising the affects it had on Matt on only a few minutes. I though it was really interesting and makes sense, so I figured it can't hurt. No warm up no range straight to the 1st tee, striped 272yrds on the right center of fairway....commited to try to do this every hole the rest of the round. Best driving day all year by a long shot. Its not the easiest thing to keep doing every tee since there are a million things to think on the tee so I wasn't perfect on making it work but here are the details

Hit 9 of 13 fairways 2 were less then 5 yards off. And the last 2 were poor focus but didn't get into any trouble getting to the green. I'm going to keep trying this technique and find a good way to incorporate it into my preshot routine.

I hope this helps anyone else who is suffering at all off the tee. I may try and get a heart rate monitor to keep an eye and experiment with a technique to lower the heart rate.

Good stuff there: The last 2 rounds I’ve actually become aware of how nervous I am. Usually My first shot sucks and I’ll settle down from there, but my last 2 rounds it has literally taken 5 holes to make what I would consider a decent swing. I’m definitely going to pay more attention to my heart rate/breathing when I tee it up this weekend...

I don't really feel like I am an stressed or nervous person I just think that after having such poor driving lately I guess I have been anxious.
Hope this technique helps you.

The funny thing is when there are several groups waiting to tee off all watching I usually make a nice slow smooth swing and hit the best drive of the day [emoji849]

I let the other guys hit first. For some reason, the various folks I get paired up with always end up hitting it into the trees on the left. I either follow suit and end up with them, but lately I have been putting one right down the middle of the fairway. Feels good when others set a low bar on the first hole.

I'm somewhat the same way - if there's a group watching , I take greater care in my set up and swing. More often than not, it's the best drive of the day.

Love the first tee - one of my favorite shots of the round.

Ball: Titleist Pro VI or Callaway Chrome Soft X ls

While not at the same time I was fit for every club in my bag as well as the Pro VI ball. I use the chrome soft x ls on my league course.  It has much softer softer greens than the club that I belong to.

I’m on a mission to shoot my age - lifetime lowest round is 66 and I’m currently 67.

As an addendum all but the tip of the first tee at my club is hidden from view of the clubhouse, range, putting green and starter.

No need for jitters at that club. If you are playing from the tips you aren’t having jitters that’s for sure.

I use nervous and excited interchangeably: I’m so excited/have too many expectations at the first tee: I’m amazed at how many good rounds I have that started with a bogey. If I could just figure out how to settle down and make a quality swing, I’d be in business
