Swinging wedges at same speed as irons

Recommended Posts

Im trying to learn to swing my wedges equally as fast as the irons for full & partial shots, because I'm subconsciously swinging the wedges slower than the ironseg I'd like to swing a 4 iron at equal speeds as a lob wedge for full, 3\4, half swing shots, to improve consistency

I think it's because I can see that I'm nearer to the flag\green which Is making me slow my swing down

Any tips in how to do this?

I assume you mean you are decelerating your wedges coming into the impact zone which can be a problem.  I think for less than full wedge shots a long backswing gets the subconscious to slow down at impact because of the shorter distance.  I think it helps to take a shorter backswing and longer follow through to promote acceleration through impact.

Agree with @Shapotomous I was having  a similar problem chunking, pulling or pushing my wedges. Once I stated taking a shorter backswing, and a more aggressive follow through, I started hitting more greens.

I’d go to the driving range and hit the wedge(s) in question full swing until I was comfortable. That said, I almost never use my 56 or 60 full swing, gap wedge is the highest loft full swing club in my bag. My 56 has too much bounce for anywhere but sand and my 60 is very low bounce for tight lies. I've used my 60 full swing once or twice in the 3 years since I bought it, 50-60 yards over a trap/hazard, short sided with an ideal lie only. YMMV

The 4iron is longer than the wedge so it will have a faster swing speed.

Distance should always be adjusted by changing the length of the backswing, not "swinging softer."

That is a technique decision.  Some people control swing length better than speed.  Both are acceptable approaches and you will find Hugh level coaches that teach single length multiple speeds.  I am pretty sure Cameron McCormick is one.

In my twenty five years of coaching, I have found very few students who can adjust swing speed without decelerating, while almost all can learn to adjust length with even a modicum of practice. I've said it before, find a practice area where you can hit 50 balls 45 yards, 50 more from 60, 50 more from 75.... this is how you learn to score. I don't even care which method you use, it's the repetition that matters.  It drives me crazy to hear people say " these are touch shots, you can't really practice them." That's nothing but an excuse to not practice them. If you don't have a swing locked in that will carry 45 yards, or 60... you have no chance to be consistent in your wedge game. NONE!!! If you read Dustin Johnson on how he improved his wedges, this is basically it. Unglamorous, unexciting repetition.  It sure becomes exciting, however, when your handicap starts dropping to places you've never seen it go.

I don’t and didn’t disagree with you on practice.  I simply stated there is more than one way to approach hitting the ball this applies to full swing, distance wedges, finesse wedges, and putting.
