Popular Post edingc
My order of the Titleist Pro V1x RCT golf balls arrived yesterday. Together with @golfish!, we wanted to create this thread for our unofficial reviews of these new releases from Titleist. Per the marketing material, these balls feature an "internal radar reflective marker" and are "optimized for indoor spin capture." While they were developed specifically for use with Trackman, the majority of my testing will be with a Flightscope Mevo+ in my garage hitting bay, while @golfish! has a Garmin Approach R10 launch monitor. I have already finished an impromptu test session with them, and my initial results/feedback is extremely positive. I am guessing that the intent of these and why they will work with other radar based launch monitors is they “minimize” the interference that the radar receives from metal and fluorescent lighting and helps the radar unit lock in on the ball. I say that because I’ve read comments on other forums that the advice received from customer support is to reduce this type of interference. edingc, TR1PTIK, Shankopotomous and 3 others 6 Quote Driver: G400 Max 9* w/ KBS Tour Driven Fairway: Paradym AI Smoke Max HL 16.5* w/MCA TENSEI AV Series Blue Hybrids: 915H 21* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype 915H 24* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype Irons: TR20V 6-11 w/Vizard TR20-85 Graphite Wedge: 54/12D, 60/8M w/Accra iWedge 90 Graphite Putter: Render w/VA Composites Baddazz Backup Putters: Sacks Parente MC 3 Stripe, Milled Collection RSX 2 Member: MGS Hitsquad since 2017

I have a pretty good setup in my garage with all LED utility lighting and only minimal metal objects (I hit parallel to the door, which is mostly wood anyway). I still did not have particularly great results using the metallic dots included with the Mevo+. One of the biggest detractors of the dots for me is the need to hit the ball in a similar location each time, since the Mevo+ only reads spin if the dot is faced away from the radar at impact. Balls just are not meant to take that many impacts in such a small area, combined with hitting the target/net and stopping quickly. I cracked two balls in the first couple hundred swings and I haven't hit anything longer than a 4 hybrid yet. My hope is that I will be able to more even distribute the strikes on the RCTs and make them last significantly longer. It's not uncommon for me to take 150 swings in a practice session if I'm trying to work on something specific. Most of the time I just use a ball without a dot and focus on general shape, height, club and ball speed. The Mevo+ is plenty accurate with those, even without dots. But I'm really wanting to do a full bag gapping this winter and create a reliable wedge matrix. Both require accurate spin because the estimated spin Mevo+ provides is generally too low and results in carry distances that are closer to fliers than actual distances. edingc
I've been really impressed with the durability of the RCTs. I hit probably 50-60 balls on Sunday with mid-irons and wedges with a single RCT. Last night I used the same RCT to hit about 100 more shots, including about 25 shots with my 4 hybrid. Over the last 10 swings with my hybrid Mevo+ registered ball speeds averaging 147 MPH, so the ball took some abuse going into the net and vinyl target. My hypothesis about spreading out the impacts around the entire ball leading to longer ball life seems to be supported so far. I have added a few large sheets of cardboard to the floor between the net and my stance/hitting mats. The ball tends to kick back or roll off of the target and having the cardboard there catches most of the balls before they hit concrete and scuff the cover. Indoor/outdoor carpet would probably be better, but I'm making due with what's available. I split a Z-Star and a MTB-X after not that many swings using the metallic dot, I assume due to hitting in one spot only. On the flip side, I have a Q-Star Tour that I use for all of my warm ups and when I'm less focused on perfect numbers. It has seen a lot of swings and hasn't split yet, but the cover is nearly gone at this point. I didn't really touch on spin from my session last night, but I would say so far I'm getting measured spin that seems accurate about 90 percent of the time. There are still a few missed reads, and I've also had a few over reads where I will get 10,000+ RPM on a hybrid or mid-iron. But overall, I'm happy with them. They definitely improve the indoor experience. I dropped one off to my instructor yesterday. He has both a Mevo+ and a Trackman 3 and is going to give it a test in his indoor space as well. If you are concerned about breakage, this is probably a better approach than using 1 ball over an entire session. I hit in the garage which is not climate controlled, so I keep the balls and clubs indoors this winter. Clayton
Thanks for starting up this thread. I'm working at a Trackman simulator business this winter so I have basically unlimited time on them. I've been using two of the test #3 and #4 balls a bunch of us got from Titleist for the MGS test along with one Srixon Z-star and a TP-5 ball with those weird triangles on them, and was using 2 Chrome Soft. I have a silver dot on all of them so they get hit on the same side quite a bit. None of them have cracked but a couple have terrible cover durability. One thing I do is use a "wedge ball" for anything more than the pitching wedge. I've noticed that dedicated wedges will make marks on pretty much any brand (compared to 3-P sets). So I'm planning to take one of the RCT when I get them and use it just for my wedges. I do use silver dots and it's night and day for TM4 to capture real numbers. It is a PITA to align it for every shot. I can't wait to use the RCT! Have you guys used them on Trackman yet? How did you purchase them? I see Titleist is out. Fortunately I had my Pro in the US order me 3 dozen a while back and they should be there by the time I am in the US mid month. Last thing - the Callaway Supersoft balls we put out for people to use cracked extremely quickly. I bet the ones I'm using have at least 200 shots on each ball, probably more. edingc

I'm not positive if I will or not. $1,000 is enough that it gives me some pause. If it was a $500 upgrade I'd probably be all over it. My instructor (who is also a college golf coach), has a Mevo+ for easy transportation to/from events since it's much smaller than Trackman. He did some testing indoors with his Trackman vs. the Mevo+ and the numbers were neck-and-neck up until the longer clubs. He said he is going to order the Pro package and test it out, so he told me to wait until he can see how it compares to his TM. 21 minutes ago, Clayton said: Have you guys used them on Trackman yet? I'm using it with the Mevo+, @golfish! is going to use it with the Garmin R10. I was able to order directly through Titleist's website, which shows the ProV1x RCT is still in stock at the moment. $65 + tax, and free shipping. Better deal than when I bought them and paid $5 shipping a few weeks ago. I ordered on Nov. 13 and they shipped Nov. 24. I have well over 200 shots on the only RCT I've used so far and it is holding up well. edingc
As far as durability goes, my initial sacrificial ball is still holding strong! The cover is a little worse for wear from the concrete, but it has not cracked yet. My best guess is that it has close to 600 shots on it at this point, including over 100 drivers. My ball speeds today hit 165-167 at times, so I'm impressed by the ball still hanging in there. I obviously wouldn't play something like this on the course, but in the garage it's more than fine. golfish!
Ok so first impressions the packaging and ball doesn't seem to be any different than a standard prov1. Unfortunately I made the mistake of ordering a prov1 rct instead of the prov1x rct so that I could do a direct comparison as I only have BNIB prov1x. So anyway I proceeded with the test and have found something very interesting. The Garmin R10 picks up the standard balls fine. No metallic dots and not aligning the balls in any particular way. Can't speak for accuracy of spin numbers but judging as I was hitting full 7i shots which I normally use for total distance of 140-150, that's what I was getting on the Garmin with the standard Prov1x. When I switched over to the RCT, the R10 only picked up 2 shots out of 10. Thinking it might be the unit not the ball, I change back to the standard ProV1x and the unit picked up the shot right away. Thinking it could be the club, I tried hitting chip shots with the 56 wedge. Same deal. The R10 missed 1 or 2 out of 10 with the standard ProV1 but missed 9 out of 10 with the RCT. Not sure if I'll be able to continue this test but will try to gather more data. Might try to reach out to Garmin support and see if they can answer. edingc, Nolan220 and JohnSmalls 3 Quote Driver : SIM2 Max 9* MC Kuro Kago Silver 60 Stiff Woods : GS53 3 Wood 14* Mitsubish Tensei Blue 73g Regular Hybrids: 949X Project X HZRDUS RDX Black Irons : 699 Pro Black 5-AW 1* flat KBS Tour V 90 Stiff Shafts Wedges : 52, 56, 60 Putter : Spider Red Bag : lightweight cart bag | Dry Series Bag Ball : TP5 PIX (2019) | ProV1x (2021) Rangefinder : ULT-X Pushcart : M5 GPS DHC Electric Push Cart SoCal, USA Right handed HDCP 16.
edingc
9 hours ago, golfish! said: Ok so first impressions the packaging and ball doesn't seem to be any different than a standard prov1. I'm not very familiar with the R10. Does it have optional stickers to put on the ball? Good example of perhaps the software needs to be setup to handle the marking lines correctly. I'll be curious to see if Garmin support has an answer for you. golfish!
Ok quick update. Reached out to Garmin and the support rep mentioned their Team lead purchased some RCT balls for their own testing. Said for now try to follow the instructions on indoor setup best results. Unfortunately they're recommending 12-15 feet ball to net and 8-10 feet R10 to ball. Even at minimum I would be 20 feet from R10 to net. I think I've got 15 maybe 16 feet total in my garage end to end so don't know how that will work. Might have to try and find a friend with a bigger garage or a bigger house! They've requested pictures of the balls, my indoor setup, and swing videos with each ball so I'll be sending those later tonight. Will keep yall posted. edingc
Still using the same RCT ball that I started with. No cracks and the ball speeds seem to be about right, yet. Titleist quality, for sure. I've cracked three other balls now so I continue to be impressed by the longevity of this single ball. I've learned that the Mevo+ can be pretty finicky and sensitive. Last night I think I did not have the tilt of the Mevo+ quite right (maybe not fully extended), and it was giving me lower than expected launch angles and heights throughout the bag. But, more relevant to this topic, I had a number of estimated non-reads with the RCT ball, and more misreads than I had in other sessions. For example, out of 20 full swing 9 irons, I had three register as 12,000+ RPM, while the remainder were in the 6,000-8,000 RPM range. Moving to some of the longer clubs I was seeing a lot more estimated reads than I have come to expect. Again, I think my setup may have been the issue, so I'll pay attention to that next time out. cnosil, RollingGreens, JohnSmalls and 1 other 4 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 3.6 / Anti-Cap: 9.9 (Last Updated Sept. 1, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. golfish!
@edingc hmm maybe it gas something to do with my set up as well. I haven't had a chance to redo the setup and test but I do have a lot of metallic objects near the garmin unit when hitting and the base is below the level of the hitting mat (though not sure how this would affect it since the unit sits on a tripod above the ground anyway). Maybe the special radar reflective coating inside the RCT balls is bouncing a lot of waves back and its being reflected again by the metallic objects near the unit? I am also hitting parallel to the garage door which is mostly wood as well. I have no drywall in my garage. edingc and JohnSmalls 2 Quote Driver : SIM2 Max 9* MC Kuro Kago Silver 60 Stiff Woods : GS53 3 Wood 14* Mitsubish Tensei Blue 73g Regular Hybrids: 949X Project X HZRDUS RDX Black Irons : 699 Pro Black 5-AW 1* flat KBS Tour V 90 Stiff Shafts Wedges : 52, 56, 60 Putter : Spider Red Bag : lightweight cart bag | Dry Series Bag Ball : TP5 PIX (2019) | ProV1x (2021) Rangefinder : ULT-X Pushcart : M5 GPS DHC Electric Push Cart SoCal, USA Right handed HDCP 16.

Maybe the special radar reflective coating inside the RCT balls is bouncing a lot of waves back and its being reflected again by the metallic objects near the unit? I am also hitting parallel to the garage door which is mostly wood as well. I have no drywall in my garage. I played with my Mevo+ setup this weekend and focused on setting the tilt to 17 degrees (which is what I found as recommended online). Height and launch seemed better. I found a Google Sheet from one of the golf sim forums and used that to confirm launch angle with where the ball what hitting on my net. It's definitely close. Carry and, best I can tell, shape seems about right again too. That being said, since getting the latest 0.19 firmware for Mevo+ last week, I seem to be having more estimated spin readings with the RCT balls than I did prior. That's completely anecdotal with no concrete numbers or evidence. I think it's safe to say they are a good partner with the Mevo+ but they don't magically eliminate all misreads/non-reads. In some cases I'd rather have an estimated read because 12,000+ RPM mid-irons are unusable shots. I know of one other person who is using the Mevo+ and RCT balls locally, and I've heard they have been really solid for him as well. He does not have the same swing speed as I do, however. I also heard back from my instructor and he was not impressed with the RCT as he didn't see any improvement in his readings on his Mevo+ indoors or his Trackman. But I didn't talk to him in person and only through text message, so I'm going to ask more questions next time I see him in person. cnosil and Nolan220 2 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 3.6 / Anti-Cap: 9.9 (Last Updated Sept. 1, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. edingc
I'm still using the original ball I started my testing with back in November. The RCTs get a big positive mark in the durability category. I have not seen a significant reduction in ball speeds or anything like that. As the cover has worn, and since the FlightScope firmware update, the estimated reads have gone up significantly, however. For example, from Sunday's session: Driver - 6/63 (9.5%) Balls captured Actual Spin 2 Hybrid - 2/7 (28.6%) Balls captured Actual Spin 4 Hybrid - 0/7 (0%) Balls captured Actual Spin 4 Utility - 6/18 (33.3%) Balls captured Actual Spin 6 Iron - 6/14 (42.9%) Balls captured Actual Spin 7 Iron - 5/8 (62.5%) Balls captured Actual Spin 9 Iron - 3/5 (60%) Balls captured Actual Spin Full 54 Wedge - 12/18 (66.6%) Balls captured Actual Spin Partial 54 Wedge - 3/14 (21.4%) Balls captured Actual Spin Sunday's session was with the Mevo+ set 8 feet behind the ball on the concrete, on indoors mode, with about 13 feet of flight. Mevo+ was set to 18 degree tilt angle, and the ball height parameter was set to 2 inches since the Fiberbuilt Flightdeck I use is about 2 inches above the Mevo+. These settings seem to get accurate peak height and direction, but the lack of spin is a little concerning. There does seem to be a cutoff at about 140 MPH ball speed where spin seems to be significantly more difficult for the Mevo+ to read. That's right between my 4 utility and 4 hybrid. A good test will be for me to use a new RCT the next time out and pick a similar selection of clubs. Hoping to get out there sometime Thursday for another session. I wonder if anyone who has the update on the mevo has noticed any improvements in spin captured with the RCT balls even though it’s not a main reason to upgrade I think the captured spin is pretty good. There are a few low-spin fliers every now and then, but for example, my 7 iron spins somewhere around 5,500-5,600 off the Fiberbuilt on a good, measured strike. That's maybe a touch lower than I'd hope for on course, but with the height I get it's very playable. The Mevo+ tends to overestimate spin when it doesn't measure it, unfortunately. Since the latest firmware update they've cut the estimated spin on the driver and longer clubs a bit, but it's still higher than I'd expect (and higher than on measured spin shots). For example, it's not uncommon for the Mevo+ to estimate spin at 3,000+ on the driver when a measured spin rate for a similar shot shape might be somewhere around 2,400. edingc
I finally broke the first RCT ball from my box yesterday morning during my practice session. I was in the process of testing the E6 range vs. Flightscope range and couldn't figure out why the E6 range ball speeds went way down. I checked the ball and noticed it had finally split. New ball went in and the numbers looked much better. I am impressed that there did not seem to be a ball speed drop off until the moment the ball actually cracked. Driver spin reads still tend to be estimated, but the new ball resolved a lot of my misreads with mid irons. My hypothesis there is that the cover damage on my original RCT was affecting the radar bounce back off the markers. I don't think the ball is to blame for the driver. For whatever it's worth, in my particular setup the Mevo+ seems to struggle with hybrids and driver. While the ball speeds and carry seem OK with the hybrids, club speed does not line up with my irons. Spin estimation/read is hit or miss. Driver ball speeds are pretty erratic and spin is rarely measured. I think some of it is indoor swing syndrome, but again, none of the numbers fall in line with the rest of the bag. It will be interesting to get outdoors in the spring and see what kind of differences I see between my practice indoors vs. out. MGrand
RCT on TrackMan - Unofficial Review Thanks for starting this thread. My ProV1x RCTs arrived last week and I finally got to use them for an indoor TrackMan session last night. Very similar impression as others have had regarding durability, but thought I'd share feedback from how the spin data was showing up on a TrackMan in an indoor session. Below are my initial (and purely anecdotal) takeaways from my first time hitting the RCTs. Regarding durability: I was hitting with a friend for around two hours and we used the same RCT ball the entire time (although we did go back and forth with the RCT and a regular ProV1x to compare); after all of those shots the ball held up great with barely any signs of use. Not a surprise from a Titleist, but still was happy to see it, especially since this included hitting some full shots with a 60*. Regarding spin: I can only recall seeing one italicized spin rate (meaning estimated) with the RCT and that was a super wild shot that rhymes with "thank" from the guy I was hitting with. I did notice when we went back and forth between the RCT and the regular ProV1x that the majority of the shots with the regular ball did have italicized spin rates, so that was promising. With all the clubs the spin on solid shots was right where I would expect it to be. We also definitely saw the spin pick up on strikes lower on the face and saw the spin drop off when struck higher on the face, etc. Overall, I was very impressed and can't wait to get back on the TrackMan to keep practicing and testing either tonight or later this week.
