Smoke Black or Smoke Green?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I'll try to include all pertinent information in the thread but I'm sure I will miss something. I am needing some advice as to which shaft I need to use in my driver. I play a TM Sim 2 Max 9* in the standard setting. Both shafts that I have are 6.5 flex (xstiff) the black is 62grams and the green is 60grams. I have a driver swing speed of 110+ and usually play a soft fade, however, I'm pretty inconsistent. My club fitter/instructor recommended that I purchase a project X hzdrs smoke black shaft and he "tipped" it for me and I have been gaming that for awhile with some good results. When I purchased my TM though it came with a project X hzdrs smoke green shaft. I played yesterday and noticed that the hosel on my black shaft was coming loose a little bit (slight gap between shoulder and the adapter). I couldn't fix it on the course and didn't want to launch the club head! So I switched to the smoke green.....and started to hit some pretty good shots! I couldn't tell a difference between the feel and maybe I just got lucky on a few shots.

What is everyone's thoughts on the smoke green overtaking the tipped smoke black?? I know it is a small sample size but it appears that for the near term I might be gaming the green!

Do you have launch monitor numbers that show carry, dispersion, launch, spin, etc with standard deviations?   Without that type of information to compare your results, the answer to your question is that it is possible that the green is better for you.

I do not have any right now...but my fitter has a trackman so I need to schedule an appointment and let him reassess. Last time he had me on the trackman was for a fitting with my irons so I was only swinging my 7.

Despite both being x stiff you really can’t compare stiffness between them. Stiffness is only comparable between the same shaft line in the same weight class. Even though both shafts are from PX they are completely different designs and therefore stiffness which has no industry standard is just a label.

This is the way to go. You said he recommended the black so he has a lot more information on your swing than anyone on this forum and recommendations or opinions on either shaft are just that and the results may be different for you compare to what we would say. The launch monitor will tell you how each one works with your swing and you can tell if you like the ball flight, feel and which one works better for.
