GolfSpy_APH
Sometimes the old ways are the best ways. We are going to go through and continue this test/review under the old method as we intend to create a little competition here. I will leave a link to this thread in the old one, however in the mean time please welcome our testers once again as they look to put the Arccos bundle through its paces and see how it can help/improve their game along the way. Stay tuned for more about our side challenges/games to create a bit more fun and involvement in this test and maybe have some of you readers join in on the fun as well! GolfSpy AFG
Getoffmylawn’s Take: Arccos is a great concept that can definitely help you play better golf, but it’s still a little rough around the edges in execution, and for me it’s a little too invasive in my on-course routine. Read on! Greetings fellow golf junkie! My name’s Hayes. I’m on Active Duty in the Air Force, I’m a happily married father of 5 and pretty damn busy as a result, and when I’m not working or doing family stuff, I’ve got golf on the brain. (Yes, I know I seriously out-kicked my coverage in the wife department.) I’ve been playing for 9 years now and have slowly whittled my way down to a single digit handicap. I tend to get 1-2 rounds in a week at best, and have struggled to find consistency lately; I am as likely to shoot an 83 as I am a 73. Practice time is even more precious to me, so when I do get a chance to practice it’s become very important to me to make sure I’m using my time wisely. My long-term goal in golf is to get to a plus handicap and eventually enter (and compete well in) some mid-am competitions. If I’m going to improve, I need to focus my efforts and some Strokes Gained analytics should surely help me reach my goals. Enter Arccos...? If you have any experience with Arccos, you know the company makes some very bold claims regarding their product, not the least of which is their statement that the average new member reduces their handicap by 5.71 strokes in the first year! Arccos says you’ll “Improve faster by harnessing the world’s largest on course data set,” and “Make better decisions with A.I. machine learning! They say you’ll “Know your game by truly understanding your strengths and weaknesses” and “Vote for Pedro, and all of your wildest dreams will come true.” Okay, Arccos doesn’t make that last claim, but it kind of feels like they stop just short of it, right? Well on the MGS forum we try to cut through the hype and see if the product actually delivers. Arccos does, sort of… First Impressions (3 out of 5 Stars) For this test I received the Arccos Starter Bundle, which consists of 14 sensors, and Arccos Link. As far as packaging was concerned, everything was perfectly in order and arrived well-protected. Installation was stress-free; the app brings up a pairing wizard wherein you basically identify the club, scan the sensor with your phone, and tada…your club is paired. I also received a Superstoke Putter Grip adapter. If you’re familiar with SuperStroke putters, the end of the grip includes a counterweight port, which means you can’t simply screw in an Arccos sensor. Arccos has made an adapter kit to account for that which works pretty well (and as far as I can tell is something the Shotscope bubbas haven’t developed yet.) As to aesthetics and fit and finish, I have to admit I’m not entirely thrilled with Arccos in this department. I understand Arccos is a brand with a signature look, but the green is pretty meh when it buts up against some contrasting colors. Arccos recently released a Limited Edition “Smoke” package that replaced that green with a gray, and I would really prefer that look. The other oddity that kept creeping up for me concerns the fit of the sensors. They fit perfectly flush against the grip of course, but I found myself consistently gripping up on the club as a result of the sensor, basically treating the sensor as the “new” butt end of the club. Not good, and maybe that’s just me, but it’s something I’ll have to pay attention to going forward. Finally, Link. From an aesthetics standpoint it’s a clean and unobtrusive little gizmo. Once it’s clipped to my front pocket I didn’t really pay any attention to it until it was time to mark a flag. More on Link later… The Numbers (4 out of 5 stars) When discussing the numbers in Arccos, there are really three different sets of numbers to consider. The first, the GPS, is 5 stars all the way. As a guy who maybe reaches for his Bushnell rangefinder a little too often, I was very keen to get my hands on a good GPS, and Arccos did not disappoint. Arccos pulled in my home course no problem, but where it really shined was in providing conditions-adjusted yardages for the front, center, and back of the green. ALL of my Arccos rounds so far have been in cold temps and wind, and having the guess work taken out of the distances was extremely helpful in picking a club and putting a committed swing on it. Mind you, I still had to hit the shot and I didn’t always pull it off, but if I missed a shot it wasn’t because of indecision. The second set of numbers is the Strokes Gained figures, and here Arccos is going to be a difference maker in the long term. Now mind you, going in I kind of knew I was pretty good off the tee, really good around the green, and not so awesome with my approach game or putting. After test-driving Arccos, guess what? Turns out I’m pretty good off the tee, good around the green (but maybe not as good as I thought I was), and not so awesome with my approach game or putting. However, Arccos is great at chopping up the numbers further into specific yardages, and I can’t wait to get more rounds in and watch the data set grow. One cool feature you can use to do that is the Arccos Dashboard; if you don’t want to stare at your phone, you can log in to the Arccos site and manage your account and comb through your data directly on their website. They’ve also just rolled out a Beta version of the dashboard that should be fun to cruise through: The third set of numbers is the distances by club. Here, the jury’s out but so far I’m not impressed. Now granted, I don’t have a ton of rounds in so this should improve considerably in theory. And, Arccos has supposedly improved their algorithm to eliminate outlier shots that shouldn’t be calculated in your total distances. That said, but there just ain’t no freakin’ way these are my yardages. (I'll now pause while you mutter "he's in denial" to yourself.) As I said, I’ve been playing a lot in cold temps and a lot of wind, meaning I’m taking a lot of club and hitting knockdown shots. I’m not confident Arccos, despite whatever updates have been made, is really capable of accurately assessing club yardages if it can’t filter better for knockdowns, punch outs (which I do a lot with my 7-iron), etc. I intend to come back to this thread as this part of the story evolves, but so far I’m unimpressed with this part of the system. One thing is for sure, I’m going to get a ton of use out of the Strokes Gained data, and the GPS will be a go-to for distances during the rounds. A couple of other nuggets I’ll pass on: I make a habit of putting my iPhone 12 in low battery mode before playing. In low battery mode, checking Arccos for GPS yardages and checking whether or not it was capturing my shots, it still drained about 25% of my battery life. Of course, I may have been checking ProFootballTalk and answering “what hole are you on” texts from the wife a bit too. Also, regarding Link, I purposefully didn’t charge it after my first 18, and my 13 on my second 18 hole round a week later I started to get low Link battery notices. It still made it through the second 18, but it’s probably best to charge it after every round. On-Course (4 out of 5 stars) First, the positive…as I’ve already discussed, the condition-adjusted GPS was enough on its own to help me hit better shots. That said, it’d be an exaggeration to say you can simply start your round in Arccos, forget about it, and presto…there’s your score after 18. Frankly, I had mixed results that got progressively better with each round. My first time out, Arccos Link missed a ton of shots, and I must have spent 15 minutes combing through my scorecard trying to update the shots I missed. The interface on Arccos to add shots is easy enough, but crawling through the scorecard to try and plug them in was pretty much a PITA. My second time out, Link performed a little better, but I stil had to add a couple shots and, oddly enough, delete a few shots that Arccos had added in. My third time out, after some tips from some helpful users on this forum, Link did much better after I adjusted how I was using it. To make it work, I did have to add a few steps to my normal routine. One, I didn’t always remember to mark the flag. It’s easily done with a click on the Link, but it did take a while to get into the habit. Two, my post round score cleanup was much improved after another user recommended I simply take a quick look on my way to the next tee box, just to make sure everything had been captured correctly and do any quick cleanup. That practice worked MUCH better than waiting until the end of the round. The Good, the bad, the inbetween (3 out of 5 stars) Part of the Link discussion is a matter of personal preference. If you’re good with wearing a watch, Arccos just released updates to let you start and play an entire round, tracking all your shots, without every touching your phone. Or, you could always go old school and keep your phone in your pocket. For me, call me stubborn but I won’t wear a watch or carry my phone…Link has got to work or Arccos is a no-go for me. And it does, most of the time. The other nuance with Link that kind of bothers me is how much it draws my attention to my score if I check that it properly recorded my score each hole. I suspect I’m not alone in this, but I continue to struggle with doing some math in my head and knowing how much I’m over par by a certain point in the round, and what I need to shoot coming in to meet a certain goal score. It’s a bad habit to get into…I would much rather be process and “next shot” oriented than results oriented. I’ve always found I’ve shot my best rounds when I’m not keeping the card and I’m letting a playing partner do it…gives me a chance to not dwell on it after every hole. Well, for Link to work without a massive 15-minute scorecard review at the end of the round, guess what…I’ve got to review each hole and dwell on my score. I don’t like that nuance, at all Play it or Trade it? (4 out of 5 stars) I’m certainly going to play it for a season. Frankly, if I can’t get my mental game strong enough to not let knowing my score bother me, then I feel like I’ve got bigger problems. And, as you’ve probably guessed by now, I am really really excited for a year of Strokes Gained analytics, and the conditions-adjusted GPS as well. I’m also impressed so far with what seems to be an attitude of perpetual improvement from Arccos. I’ve already mentioned the new Dashboard and the Apple Watch updates, and these improvements seem to follow a trend of continuous upgrades each year. Bottom line: I’m going to give it a chance. Conclusion Is Arccos going to reduce my handicap by 5 strokes? I highly doubt it, but remember Arccos claims to reduce strokes by an AVERAGE of 5. I came into this having a pretty good idea of where I need to work hard to improve, and I’ll use the Strokes Gained analytics on the Dashboard to further refine my practice habits. If a higher handicap player came to Arccos having no idea where they’re losing shots, I can see this system yielding some eureka moments that leads to those 5 stroke gains. And as I’ve said earlier, perhaps the data will get better with more rounds, but the notion that Arccos will help me understand how far I really hit my clubs isn’t panning out. In my opinion, that part of the system needs work to further refine and eliminate outliers like knockdown and flighted shots. That’s a tall order I know, but it strikes me as a deficiency just the same. MyWifesSwingCoach
My name is Matt Wardell and I am 30 years old. I live in Southgate, MI with my Wife and two daughters. I want to start off by thanking MyGolfSpy and Arccos for this amazing opportunity. I am a CAD Designer and now work with wiring harnesses for gas and electric vehicles. I have been working from home since the pandemic began, and while I want to take more advantage of that to go golf, nothing could be better than being at home with my Wife and girls. The lockdowns are what brought me back to the game I love after a near decade hiatus, it began with youtube videos and MyGolfSpy whilst I was on medical leave helping my Wife through some severe post-partum issues. This led me to buy some used clubs, swinging and putting in the living room. But lets back up a little bit. My journey in Golf started with a misunderstanding, while I was getting ready for high school (~early 2000s) my father was talking to me about sports to play. While I have played many sports throughout my life such as hockey, soccer, basketball, and baseball, Golf wasn’t really on my radar. But I misunderstood my Dad and I thought that playing a sport was a requirement to graduate, my old man had been playing golf for a little bit so high school golf it was. I played on the varsity team, worked at a virtual golf facility and fell in love with the game, the camaraderie, the fact that it is a difficult game but also fun, always wanting to improve whether it be strategy or form. I think Arnold Palmer said it best… "Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented." These days I can play a couple times a month and thankfully my area has some nice courses as well as some really nice courses if you don’t mind a short drive. I am also working to help my Wife and kids get into the game as they saw my enthusiasm for golf, and we thought it would be a nice family activity. Unfortunately, that has been a slow path lately and I hope that come spring we can really get moving on that, I will still be reviewing the Arccos system during that time as well so that will help. Testing For this test, I will be increasing the amount that I typically golf. This is due to Michigans season eventually coming to an end, and to provide as much data as I can for what I will call the first half of the review. As we are being generously provided a year membership to Arccos, I will be attempting to collect data until I am no longer able to play due to weather, I will then look into what areas need improvement per Arccos recommendation. During the off season, I will use Arccos data to work on areas that need improvement and see how much it has helped me in the beginning of next season. I am also playing with the idea of putting the Arccos system head-to-head against my ShotScope V2 watch, how I would do this is not completely ironed out so I will update when I am able. According to the Arccos website, new users can expect a 5 stroke improvement. So after getting my initial handicap via their strokes gained analysis, I will be seeing if that kind of improvement is achievable between now and when my prepaid membership expires. It is at that point I will make my decision whether the system will stay with me or not. I am very excited to test this product as I have been wondering about stats and what I should keep and not keep while also paradoxically wanting to keep everything as simple as possible while still improving. My hope is that this Arccos system will do just that for me. My biggest hope above all else, is for all those reading to take something valuable from my review be it a new interest, perspective, maybe even a laugh. I will end this introduction with one of my favorite prayers... “Lord, please use my crap as fertilizer for their growth. Amen” I hope you all enjoy the review and please do not hesitate to ask questions. Popular Post Ben_Howell34
Introduction My name is Ben Howell and I am 31 years old, living in Hoover, AL with my wife and two daughters. First, I would like to thank MGS for the opportunity to perform this test, and Arccos for providing the system! I love sports, outdoors, and am an extrovert, so golf suits me well. I also love to travel, eat out, and experience new things. I work as a major account sales rep for Xerox, so I get to use golf with my work (or in lieu of it ) sometimes, which is great. Golf I started playing golf later in life. Growing up in a small town we did not have a golf course, and put most of my energy into baseball and football. I thought golf would be too slow and boring (wow was I wrong). Ended up playing college football at the University of Alabama which didn’t leave much time for anything else, but I did pick up golf sparingly. After college, I started playing golf more, but wasn’t until about 5 years ago that I really started getting more serious about it. I play an average of 2-3 times a month. I am not a member of any club, and the Birmingham area has a lot of great public courses. I started to keep an official handicap last year, as well as took a few lessons, which have helped a lot. I have also been fortunate to be able to get some new equipment via a sales program with my work, which is a huge help. My handicap has dropped from a 10.5 to an 8.8 in the past year or so, but more importantly I am having more fun than ever playing golf! One reason I am excited about this test is the strokes gained (SG) aspect. I always "feel" like I know where I am losing strokes, but this should give a better perspective on that. Typically, it seems I lose more shots on approaches than anything else. Generally speaking, my strengths are putting and length off the tee, although accuracy can be wanting. Goals for this test According to the Arccos website, "The average Arccos Caddie member improves their handicap 5.78 strokes in the first year!" I would love to see how that holds up in my own game, in the short and long term. I would also like to see how the strokes gained feature helps gear me towards certain practice habits. Does it help me in terms of practicing correctly, or could it mess with my mental game on the course? How well does the actual product work? Is it a smooth look and feel that works almost seamlessly, or can it be glitchy? Is it something fun to use, or just another something that I have to look at my phone for instead of enjoying the golf course? How accurate are the statistics? Can it compare to other players? Could it replace my current golf app (i.e. 18 birdies, 19th hole, etc.)? I do have one friend who already has this application @Mtbryant01 and he seems to like it. I have not really used it with him, so my "slate is clean" as they say, which is the way I like it with tests such as these. If there is anything you would like to see tested or are curious about this product, please let me know. I am very excited to test this out! First Impressions: 20/20 When I received the package, it was not very big at all, which I great as the smaller the better in my opinion for something like this. The packaging and product are really slick, and I almost felt like I was receiving an Apple product. Clean edges and the sleek white box are a very attractive look for something that is being sold as high tech. The parts themselves were very easy to install on the clubs and seem durable. I was somewhat worried that the sensors would affect my grip but they are unnoticeable on the few swings I took with it. The app itself has a cool look and is very simplistic (in a good way). One thing that did happen in the setup that was not necessarily easy to find out how to fix was that I double scanned a sensor. There were no instructions on how to correct that, nor a very obvious section in the app to find it. I was able to Google a solution and once I found that, it is easy to change. That would be my one suggestion to Arccos is to include more detailed instructions in that area. My putter has a counter weighted SuperStroke grip on it, so the general putter sensor did not fit my putter. However, there is a $20 alternate sensor for that grip you can purchase that is very easy to install. I would not knock off any points for having to purchase the extra sensor, but I do not see anything on the app, instructions, or website that would tell me beforehand that I needed this (albeit since this is a test, I did not purchase the system). Only because one of the other testers mentioned it did I realize I needed this alternate part. Overall, my first impression of this product is exactly what I believe the company is looking for: high tech, sleek, and metric forward. Aesthetics: 10/10 This product has a great look (it does not hurt that I love green). Very simplistic in it's design, which I like, and it is minimalist in how the sensors go on the clubs. I barely notice them which is great. The app has a great look to it and is pretty easy to navigate once you learn where everything is. The sensors looked like they might not be durable, but after using them seem to be very durable. I have treated my clubs the same way as normal (not rough by any means, but dropping them in the bag normally, dropping a wedge on the ground when I go to putt, etc.) and have not had any ill effects. They do not move either. The Numbers: 8/10 When it comes to the numbers, it performs pretty well, but I would not say it is perfect by any means. It tends to underestimate my yardages, specifically on driver. The irons seem to be pretty accurate, but based on me shooting targets with my range finder versus what yardage it says I hit it, it is lower than what my rangefinder says and how the scorecard reads (which could easily be those two things, but it is more likely the Arccos application). Another place I remove a point is the "recommended club" portion of the app. I would say 7/10 times if I had hit the club they chose for me, it would either have flown the green or, on the tee, I would have been well behind where I had driven it. I am not sure if it adjusts these things for how you are shooting over the short and long term (i.e., player X strokes gained on accuracy with driver is better than average so they can use driver here versus clubbing down), but overall, it is overly conservative in my view. The setup on this is very easy and I would give an A+. The only thing that was even a question was I accidentally scanned one sensor twice in setup, and had to google how to fix that, but it was an easy fix. On the course: 16/20 Overall, I like using it on the course. It is fun to be able to look back and see where you hit each shot and how far it went. Keeping up with your score for you is also nice, as well as not having to change holes manually once you go to the next hole. The only time I have to look at my phone is to delete any extra shots that it might add or add any it missed. This is very rare though. The one thing that makes me remove 4 points is the Link accessory. This is a small object that you hook on your belt or pocket on your lead hip to detect each shot. This allows you to not have to carry your phone with you in your pocket the whole round, you can leave it in the cart or your bag. It also gives you the ability to show where the hole is by double tapping it once on the green. Unfortunately, my experience with this was a negative one as I never had a full round that it worked well. It would either miss multiple shots or disconnect repeatedly from the application. After 5 rounds, I finally decided to give up on it and use just my phone. The nice thing is, you do not need the Link for Arccos to work, as the phone worked great for me. I do not think that on course, the actual in game yardage helped me or hurt me much. However, I do think that the overall stats of the application pointed me in the right direction on where to use my finite amount of practice time. The Good, the Bad, and the In Between: 19/20 Overall, Arccos is really fun to use. However, for me, the fun with it is not really on the course, it is more about reviewing the rounds, hole by hole and shot by shot. I really like the feature where you can see each hole's aerial view and see where you went well or wrong. I also love how you can dive into the strokes gained per club, per round, per segment (driving, approach, short game, putting) and overall. It is fun to see improvement as well as digging into what parts of that game you are losing strokes on (i.e. proximity to the hole vs pure distance). I do feel this has given me new insight into my game overall, seeing where I need to improve and how much these deficiencies are holding me back. This is my main goal overall, so that is what really matters. The only thing that keeps me from giving this a 20/20 is the Link issues described earlier, but I feel it is unfair to ding this twice, but also unfair to give it a 20/20 as well. Play it or Trade it?: 15/20 I am very torn here. I do like using the product and believe it has helped me somewhat. I think the purchase price is more than fair for this technology (around $200). However, I am not sure if it is worth the price of the annual subscription, which is $156 annually, for me personally. I knew going into this that my weakness was my approach play, and this so far has validated that knowledge. I do not think that the product really makes me play my best on "gameday" so to speak, but I do think the knowledge of where to practice will eventually make me better. However, again, there was no "lightbulb" going off from this product, it only validated what I already knew to be true. I have 6 more months of the free trial, so my opinion on this may change. I have only used this during the offseason, so I will be interested in seeing how the spring and summer change my mind, if at all. I do think that for a golfer who is a low handicap (I am an 8.1) looking for the edge in their club championship or getting to scratch or better, it could be worth the $155 per year. Once you get to that point, it seems that the difference in winning and losing are minimal, and this could give you the edge you need. Conclusion: In conclusion, I believe this is a strong product that adds a fun element to the golf experience, mostly post round. It also is something I believe can help the average player find out where their struggles are and how they can gain the most improvement out of practice, as well as the low handicapper finding that extra edge. Popular Post DiscipleofPenick
Hey spies, it's ya boy back at it again with the Arccos test! My name is Tom & I play out of Cleveland, Ohio. I have been golfing since I was in middle school as my dad and uncles got me involved in the game. I currently have a 4.9 handicap, but I got it down to 2.7 a month or so before my daughter was born in 2019. It's the three of us in the house, with our two dogs - Reggie the Hound mix & Otis, our new Bernease Mountain Dog. Reggie is 6 & Otis is 1, and our daughter is almost 3, on October 5th. For golf, I am a semi-competitive golfer. I played in 3 tournaments this year, but didn't do better than middle-of-the-pack finishes in any of them. I take the game serious and mostly play on public courses, taking advantage of the great munis Cleveland offers. I used to be a very long hitter, but it seems like that playing field has leveled out in the last few years (everyone hits it far). Now I feel like irons & chipping are the best parts of my game. And I think my putting stinks, and my stat tracking this year shows it going the wrong direction, but I am hitting more GIR. But that is something I am hoping to learn with this product in the bag. I want to know if my perceptions actually match my performance - above is what I think I'm doing, but now I can see what I am actually doing. I also have a pretty good feel for my carry distances with every club, so I would like to see if that is accurate as well. As they say, we are more consistent than we think. It's just whether or know we know what our consistencies actually are and how we can adapt them for our games. As far as the claim about taking 5+ strokes off a golfer's handicap, I find that a little dubious. Though I would love it if it did, because that would turn me into a plus handicap . It's one thing to to turn a 22 into a 17, but it's a completly different world to turn a 4 into a +1. Not without dilligent practice, but hey please prove me wrong Arccos. I've known about Arccos for a few years now and have gone back and forth on wanting it. I'm already a data oriented, analytical minded person, so my fear was that I would wind up on some deep dive and too into the weeds on the data. But now that I've seen it, and I've imrpoved my mental game, I don't think that will happen. It will be a nice test for myself to not become obsessive. I am already somewhat familiar with this product as I play with @MaxEntropy quite a bit and he has it. It's actually a great help on par 3s and anytime there's lots of wind or elevation. I recall one of the first rounds, I shot a par 3 flag at like 212, he pulled out Arccos and showed it was 175 and instead of a 4i, I hit a 7i to the front of the green. So that had me intrigued. I also play with @MattF and his hat occasionally, so it would be nice to compare it to ShotScope as well. My biggest concern right now is that scoring season ends in Cleveland at the end of October. That doesn't give me a lot of time to test this, so when it shows up on Monday, I want to get it set up and get on the course asap. I really want to get those 5 rounds in asap so I can start getting feedback before the end of the year. I mean most years anymore I can play till at least Thanksgiving, if not early December, so I think I will have plenty of time to give this a thorough review. I also want to note, my plan is to play one ball the enitre time I am using this. I want the data to be as consistent as possible, so I want to control what I can. My gamer is the Srixon Z-Star, so that will be what all my shot data is off of. I know it's not everyone's favorite, but I haven't found a ball that works as well for my game. Hope you all enjoy reading the reviews, watching the competition, and I can't wait to get my hands on this!!! First Impressions 3.5 out of 5 Overall Aesthetics 5 out of 5 Overall the product and packing were very clean. I also thought it was nice that on the sensor box there was a lady golfer on the product, as it seems like they are a growing portion of the sport. As far as getting it set up and linked, it was super easy. Just screw the sensor into the butt of the grip and then follow the very simple instructions in the booklet that accompanies the sensors. Dowload the app on your phone, tell it what clubs are in your bag, and scan the sensors to link them. Make sure to be outside while doing this as the sensors are light activated. Here's what the screen looks like while setting it up. Took me maybe 15 minutes to get it all together. And as for the sensor clip itself, it is very compact, and all you need to do is turn it on when you get to the course and select the Link option for shot tracking on the Arccos app home screen. No setup is required to use the link. I wear a Medium FJ glove. I also think the durability and quality of everything is top notch, nothing skimped on there. The link doesn't really have a good storage though. There's a tiny drawstring bag included, but I don't use it. I feel like the link could easily get lost or damaged in my golf bag, so I just have it sitting loose on my desk right now. The Numbers 5 out of 5 So far I am getting accurate yardages to the green, although the app has absolutely no idea where the flag is. And I haven't really tried to adjust it to the approximate pin location. I have compared the Arccos numbers to my range finder (Precision Pro) and I am getting matching information from it. The only place I've noticed the results are off are on the green, and I understand this is a common problem with any GPS. I usually have to adjust the length of putts after the round. Mostly tap-ins being read as 3-5 footers instead. But the last round I played went much better (that's a teaser). So far I haven't played any unfamilair courses, so I know what to hit off tees or on layup shots, so I've really just ballparked the numbers on the GPS to double check I get something close. I'm not a SG Guy (it's strokes shaved playa) so this is the first time I've ever seen SG data, so I guess it's right. Though I got into a deep conversation about it the other day. It started because it seems like the SG data for putting is off. In back to back rounds I had 31 putts. In the first round my SG was -1.3, in the second it was +2.6. Maybe it's because I finally ran in a couple long putts on the second round? I also feel like at my level Short Game & Putting SG should be a bit of an inverse of each other. But it is cool to see those stats after every round. Here are my results from the first round with it. And here's my SG from my PB round on Tuesday... On-Course 3.5 out of 5 This is where I really have to ding Arccos. And it's all because of the link. The sensor does not work well at all. And oddly, it's gotten worse as I've used it. The first round was ok, but I had to adjust a couple shots. The next round it completely missed about a half dozen shots. The third round, hoo boy, it said I shot -27 under, only recorded 3 putts the enitre round, and showed me hitting numerous 430 yard drives. I suspected a problem like this could arise so I was recording my second shot distances on the scorecard and the length of my first putt. I'm glad I saved all the information because I basically had to input the enitre round manually. On the last round, I just left the link and home and put my phone in my pocket. I had to adjust maybe 4 putts. Every shot was counted this time. And honestly, I can't say I would use the sensor any more. Or at least not when I have to wear a pullover or something else that might interfere with it. I also had the link fully charged for each of the 3 rounds, so it wasn't a battery issue. The only other thing I'm not wild about is the way the map displays on my phone. If there is any sun, it is so dark, it's almost illegible. Even with the brightness turned all the way up it doesn't help. On overcast days the screen is clear and I don't have this issue. What I would love to see is if that could be improved. I would love to see something like a 'Contract Mode' a course map in white and blue, almost like architect's paper. That would really stand out. Now that I've got the bad stuff out of the way. There is a ton to like. It is super easy to use on the course. I actually didn't mind having the phone in my pocket, and I didn't even notice the link on my belt. I don't notice the sensors in the grips either. I've still been using my range finder with this too. I know, maybe it's overkill but I like to know my exact yardage to the pin and base everything off that. So what I've been doing, on my second shots, is shoot the pin with my finder, then pull up the plays as distance in Arccos. I then adjust my shot selection off of that number. I figure if Arccos is adding 5 or 7 yards for hill & wind to a front or back of green distance. I can add that same difference to whatever I shot the flag at and it works out. It's what I did Tuesday and shot a 74. I guess I don't need to be scared of that much information after all. Next will be my 5th round, so after that Arccos Caddy will come on line and start giving me club recommendations. I am really excited for that. Final Thoughts: I am itching to get back out on the course this year. I also want to see what numbers I get from Arccos once I get into the 'normal' playing conditions of the summer. Becuase we received the setup so late in the season there were a number of rounds I posted where it was fighting to stay above 50*F or there was a 3+ club wind on and off. I know there was one round where I hit 3 wood more times than I had in the previous 6 weeks. It's going to take some time, due to the heavy clay under the soil in Ohio, it'll be mid-May by the time things dry out. I think this is when I will get the most useful information out of the system. I'm not worried about the data from less than ideal playing conditions, because Arccos will show you your last 100 shots or so. If anything, Arccos helped me confirm what I had already thought. My iron play is quality, my short game saves my life, I'm not a great putter BUT it doesn't kill me, and if my drive is on, that's when I really score. But if it gets squirrely, that's when I lose the most to SG, because it's usually instant penalties driving it OB or in a hazard. It's given me 3 goals for this season - Driver consistency, Wedge Proximity, and No more 3-putts! I'll post updates on my progress with this as the season moves along. It was also nice once I realized that I could have Arccos ignore shots when giving me feedback or calculating SG. I wouldn't exclude a bad shot, but in the Fall I was having issues that it was saying how poorly I hit my 4i, which is the club I use for nearly all my punch and recovery shots. When I was able to exclude those from the calculations, Arccos gave me a more accurate statistic that I could base my performance on. One thing I did not like, in addition to the sensor belt clip (which it seems everyone had an issue at some point), was the caddy recommendations. One of my last rounds of the year I moved up to the middle tees and played a course a little under 6200 yards. Short par 4 under 350? Hit a 3-wood. Reachable 480-yard par 5? Hit a hybrid off the tee. Long 420-yard par 4? Hit a hybrid anyway and concede the bogey. Not once in 14 holes did it recommend I hit driver. I already went through this stage of golf. This is the play safe stage, where you're going to lay back, hit it down the middle, and keep the big numbers off the card. However, with where I am I want to have planned aggression on the course. I am working at breaking through to scratch and to do that I need birdie opportunities. So on short par-4s & 5s I don't want to lay back anymore, I have trust in my game and I want to go for birdies. Overall it was disappointing. Though I did not like the wearable sensor, I still see times where it could be useful. During tournament play, I could keep this on my belt or pocket so I can shot track while I keep the phone in my bag. This way I don't have to futz with the app to set it up for tournament play, and I won't be tempted to look at my phone and I can concentrate on my play. I have a rangefinder I use anyways that doesn't have the slope function. Overall, I am very happy with Arccos and I would recommend it to everyone. I didn't feel overwhelmed by the data and it helped me to pinpoint areas to work on. The subscription fee could be a hangup for some, which is understandable. I think every serious golfer should employ some kind of stat tracking system and this is a great, don't-have-to-think-about-it option. I want to thank MGS and the mods for giving me the opportunity to test Arccos and I believe it will be something that is in the bag for years to come. GolfSpy AFG
So, a little more detail I didn't share from my intro...I'm extremely excited about finally having some Strokes Gained data to support my practice and overall improvement efforts. As I posted, I'm a quite busy husband, officer, student, and father of 3...my practice time is precious, and getting out for a round doesn't nearly as often as I'd like. Then, of course, once I'm actually able to get out for a round, the "what hole are you on" texts start coming and I inevitably sprint from the 18th to the truck to get home because one of three kids has to get to whatever practice or activity they need to get to. Long build up to show you this, a screenshot of the Analysis tab for entering your post round data in the DECADE Elite program: I know that's not the best picture; I'm not expecting anyone to read it as much as recognize that it's a lot, and I have grudgingly learned that it's just not realistic to think that I'm going to be a guy that can sit down and manually enter a bunch of info post-round...life gets in the way. (If your mind goes to "well then why did you pay that much for DECADE Elite, I didn't, which is another story.) Putting is something that can be trick with Arccos, but once you are use to I do find it quite intuitive. Curious to hear your thoughts on it as the test goes on. Yes and making sure you are tracking it is important. Data will be very skewed if not. Some of the upgrades like the walking path on the green is very helpful. I can see where I look at a putt and where I putt from very easily. KC Golf
I agree with the comments around putting. The Link is great for making sure you get each putt recorded and the location on the pin with the button. Interesting; I’m looking forward to how well the system works in capturing the putts, but “fewest putts” as a stand-alone statistic is debatable. If your GIR is low and you’re getting up and down a lot, it’s debatable that you necessarily putted better than a guy who had a high GIR and two-putted a lot, no?
