cschoegolf
I was an assistant pro at a course for 5-6 years. Unfortunately I had absolutely no support from the club or patrons - I was making $8.00 an hour and the head pro took his pick of lessons and let me have the leftovers - that was after I had became the most popular instructor at the course and had 8 hours of booked lessons a day - I went from making a few hundred bucks a day to being allowed to take 1-2 lessons if any where left. I was also expected to fly back and forth to Florida to complete training and testing to join the PGA for Club Pros - Obviously impossible with no support. I had a girlfriend and 2 young children at the time. Now 5-6 years later, I am married to a very successful woman and we are trying to find a way back to golf. I am currently 36 with a wife and 2 kids and we make pretty good money. I started looking and applying for golf jobs, but I just don't understand this industry. I applied and interviewed at one of the nicest clubs around Houston, The Woodlands CC - they have 5 courses and I think you are looking at a minimum of like $50K to get in. The highest they start assistants and pros is $15/hr - They make it extremely hard to earn a living even as a club pro. None of the math here is mathing for me, but I guess for the time being, my dream will stay just that, a dream jbern, GaDawg, Rob Person and 2 others 3 2 Quote Colin Schoenemann AKA CSCHOEGOLF
Ted Tedeschi
I retired in November of 2022 & the plan for my free time was to get more serious about playing golf. I would play 3 or 4 times a year, until Covid. Did not play at all in 2020 or 2021. While talking to the starter at the local public course, he mentioned that he was retired and was thoroughly enjoying the part time job. What a great idea! Get out of the house, meet new people, and work outside in the sunshine & fresh air. Close to home part time employment with low stress tasks that are usually is not physically challenging. Free rounds of golf at the 6 courses the Park District operates, free bucket of range balls every day and discounts at the pro-shop. Pay is not great, but that is not the main attraction for me. After working in an office, at what was often a high stress job for the previous 23 years, this seemed like an excellent new direction! Started the search in early 2023 & found a position at The Vineyards golf course operated by the Hamilton County Park district. Started early April of 2023 working 20 hours per week. That left me time to squeeze in about 20 free rounds of golf. Job has been pretty much what I expected. With only 3 full time and about 15 part time employees to keep the course in shape, we stay pretty busy. For the most part, the 3 full timers handle the "heavy" work, like chemical application and day to day equipment issues. Most of the part timers are retirees that are there for the free golf. Two of the fulltime guys are the maintenance superintendent and his assistant. Both are very easygoing, low stress guys. They appreciate the older part time workers for their reliability & work ethic. If you believe our customers, last summer The Vineyards was in as good or better condition than most of the courses in the area. Including many of the private courses! Pl Took 5 months off over the winter, now back at it and looking forward to another busy summer! tdroma98, jbern and Rob Person 3 Quote Ted Tedeschi
Kevin Polischuk
Hi. I work at Springbank Links Golf Course in Calgary Alberta for the past 11 years as a marshal/starter in a very part time capacity. It has been a great way to supplement my golfing expenses, weather it’s green fees or a discount in the pro shop or food gallery. The another added bonus was getting to know all the members and making new friends who love golf as much as I do. So much so that I was invited to play in our weekly men’s night. Retired or not, if you love golf, working at a golf course is the greatest part time job you can have. mackdaddy
I have worked in and out of the golf industry for years. I have been a starter, marshal, club fitter, food and beverage manager and General manager. I agree when you work full time in the golf industry you don't find much time to play. I have found a job working one day a week as the counter person and over seeing the food and beverage operations for the pub not the events. I am allowed to play whenever I want on weekdays and after 12 on weekends unless I fit in as a walk on without a set time. The industry is work like any other job field and is fun if you work in a good team and environment. Working for an owner that is barely making ends meet is hard. I started as a golf professional in Canada at a private golf course teaching and running the pro shop and back shop for about 14 years. During those years I also opened the first indoor golf studio in that town, with that being said those was back long before the popularity increased to what it is now. I have to say those years were some of the most enjoyable years. I learned alot from the game and the people and still use those lessons today. What a great game. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. Cheers Rob Person, tdroma98 and jbern 2 1 Quote Looking forward to new and exciting people and things. Let's roll the rock. I've posted as such before, but I am in my 5th year in my position as golf course maintenance at Foster Park Golf Course, a muni in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I now have enough seniority where all I do is sit my butt atop the big John Deer fairway mowers, and stripe away! The hardest part of the job is getting up at 4:30 during the summer, in order to get started before the first tee time at 7. I'm paid a ridiculous hourly wage, plus free golf at all three of the Fort Wayne courses. The best part of the job is working with a great bunch of fellow retired guys. But also, the indescribable scent of newly-mown perennial rye, the Rembrant-like vision of the dewy fairways striping emerald green, contrasted with the grayish-green of the uncut turf are really beyond words. And the vision of the orange sun, rising over the treeline of the 9th green is an almost daily gift that money can't buy. TopShelf30
I was in the industry for 15 years. Started as a cart boy, loved being at a golf course and decided that's what I wanted to be when I grew up. I went to a PGM school and was working towards my Class A, held various Assistant Pro jobs in the North Houston area for 8ish years. The courses were very nice, private clubs, one is now hosting the LPGA Chevron, so it was nice to jump on a quick nine in the afternoon but there are other aspects of the job that aren't showcased. Your day off is a Monday or Tuesday, you work all weekends and Holidays, Large Member tournaments are 14+ hour days and the base pay is something I couldn't live on. At 22, it was the absolute dream job, but as I got older, I had to walk away. I have a deep respect for PGA pros and very grateful for my time in the industry but I thoroughly enjoy being on the other side now. Fore67
In my close to 66 years on this planet, I'm now in my 4th iteration of working in the golf business. When I was just a kid, I started washing dishes in the clubhouse at the Red Deer Golf and Country Club, as a 13 year old. I moved on to bussing tables the next year and when I was 15, I worked in the backshop hauling bags and doing minor club repair. In my 40's, I left the corporate world and worked for a summer at a local 27 hole track, the Elbow Springs Golf Course. I worked on the grounds and did most of the maintenance jobs from spring opening until we laid the tarps on the greens for the winter. I moved from Calgary to Vancouver and worked in golf retail at both Nevada Bob's/SportChek and GolfTown, where I became a Certified Professional Teacher through the CGTF Program. I qualified as a Master Clubfitter for Titleist, Callaway, Mizuno, Taylor Made and Ping. I won 2 trips in my retail time, one a Callaway trip to their Carlsbad facility and one through Nike, who took me to Florida and we played TPC Sawgrass 3 times as well as 3 other rounds of golf. My current life has me on the grounds crew at a Vancouver Parks public course called McCleery. This marks my 8th year with the Parks Board and I'm simply in paradise. I am cutting back my schedule so that I can begin a retirement, probably in the next year or so. I continue to keep my CGTF membership current so that I can earn a bit of a living teaching. My life has been about and around golf since I was 12 years old (when I started playing). In 2004 the management company I was working for got the boot and the City took over the golf course. That's when I decided to make a career change, still miss some of it though. It’s a fun hobby, and has covered many rounds of golf for me! So not sure if it really counts, but it’s fun! Im sure its out there, but drop the link. Would love to get something like this.
