What's your longest fairway club?

Recommended Posts

Modern equipment design has definitely impacted this, but realistically,
my 20º Heavenwood is the only fairway shot that I have after 5-iron.

What's the longest fairway shot for you that you consider "high percentage?"

It depends. In general, it's a 5 wood for me, but that needs to be for a shot that doesn't require a high-loft carry to reach the green, or cover a bunker / penalty area to a layup spot. My miss with the 5 wood tends to be low-launching.

If I have to make sure it's up, it's a 4-hybrid.

If it's a long, flat, open shot, I will hit 3-wood from the fairway, but that's generally me trying to hit a low shot that will run a long way.

That's impressive to me.

What does handicap have to do with it?

Perhaps nothing,
but to me,
I've always though of the very strong lofted fairway wood as a very difficult club to hit consistently,
especially without a perfect lie.

I don't know how old you are,
but wooden 3-woods were 17°
and 14° was a 2-wood.   2-wood from the fairway was a really tough shot.

Usually it’s my 3 TS Hybrid.  But right now I am playing the U510 2 with a Hazardus Black stiff shaft.  It’s rolling out great, but can also go high for me when necessary.

I love the T350 20° #4, but it's strictly a driving iron for me.
My Heavenwood is the exact same loft, but comes down much more steeply into greens.

I overlap because I love a shorter shafted forgiving iron on scary driving holes.
If I had to play an old fashioned butter knife 1-iron, though,
I'd do better playing right fielder and throwing it onto the fairway.

If I’m warm and it’s a great lie (flat), my 14.5 deg 3 wood is a fairly consistent club and by far my furthest option.

Mediocre and better fairway lies, I’m reaching for my 3h at 19 deg as my longest club.

Tough fairway lies such as ball extremely above/below my feet or some other tough scenario, I’m reaching for a five/six iron as my longest club.

If I have a decent lie the 3w at 15.5* is my 225 club.  If the lie isn't too good i hit an 18* hybrid from pretty much any lie and will get me about 200 yards.

4 wood for me if we are sticking to the "longest fairway club" question. 230 avg and the longest I have ever hit it is 284. Now if we are talking consistent most confident is 4 iron. 210-220 avg and can reach out to 260 if I nut it. I use the 4 iron off the tee more than any other club.

Great question and descriptions of how the changes in loft we have forgotten that a 13 deg 3W is much lower than when some of us grew up hitting persimmon woods from the deck.

I always prefer looking at a long fairway shot with my hybrid over a wood.  I carry my 2H about 250 and my 3W will go a little longer in the 260-265 range but the reliability of that shot off of the deck is not near as good as when I have a chance with a hybrid.  I play coastal golf as well so wind and sea level become a factor on carry as well so taking those into consideration as well.

A 3 wood, if you are asking about clubs including woods. I use a Callaway Epic GBB, adjusted to 14 degrees. If you are asking about irons or hybrid I use. 2 Hybred 17 degrees
