Golf Grips

Recommended Posts

So I have used stock standard size grips since I started golfing again and I’m just wondering what is the best grip size and grip brand for a higher handicap golfer? I really want to try bigger grips to see if I can improve my grip, face of my club, and hand positioning! Let me know what you guys think. Also, I am swinging a full set of Cobra Fly-XL!

Looking to better my golf game, learn and test golf equipment to help others with there golf game too!

When I was getting fitted I brought up switching to a midsized grip and the guy fitting me said I didn't need them. They usually help people who over rotate their hands and get hooks. Whether that's true or not I'm not sure but he talked me out of it. You could try getting tape wraps added to make you grip slightly thicker on both or one hand.

Grip size is not based on handicap.  Grip size is determined by the size of your hand or potentially if you have issues like arthritis.

If you want to see if a bigger grip will help, change the grip on one of your irons and see how well it performs.

when you hold the club, the tip of your fingers should just barely go all the way around the grip and almost touch your palm. I am midsize.  My hand is not large but my fingers are thin, so they wrap around more of the grip.  A chubby finger needs a smaller grip in order for the finger to go all the way around.  every person has the right to choose differently though.

this was the very 1st measure my 1st fitter did.

That approach never worked for me.  Standard and mid basically looked/felt the same to my eyes.  I’ve read it also matters if you hold the grip more in the palm or fingers and some measurement guides separate out finger and hand sizes.  I’ve also seen some that go by glove size,  it that assumes people use the right size glove.

here is Goof Prides measurement guide

I'm currently in the process of making the switch from Standard to Midsize. See if you have a local golf store near you that has midsize grips you can swing with. For me, I felt like i didn't have to grip down on the club as hard, and just overall felt much better. Midsize are on all the new clubs I'm getting.

I copied this from Joel Tadman , a 3 hdcp, in Golf Monthly, an article  7 things I added to my bag this year.

"    Thicker grips     This is not necessarily a trend on tour but I was surprised to discover how many players are using much thicker grips than I use - Scottie Scheffler uses six layers of double sided tape, Tony Finau has 13 wraps under the bottom hand, then we’ve got Bryson DeChambeau with his Jumbo Max grips. I used to use two layers of tape under a standard Golf Pride Tour Velvet grip but then I tried switching up into a midsize, which is the equivalent of four extra layers of tape, and it just felt more comfortable. I wasn’t missing to the left as much, particularly with my driver, and my dispersion certainly seem to be tighter. I've transferred this size of grip over to my Titleist T150 irons and SM10 wedges and I'm really enjoying how they feel and perform."

Thank you everyone for your knowledge and input on this topic. I am going to try an abundance of different things starting with using midsize grips instead of standard sized grips, reason being I feel like my grip is to tight and i am trying to over compensate how tight I hold my clubs because of standards size grips. So I’m thinking a little thicker the grip I can feel a lot more comfortable with my grip and swing. Once again thank you all and I will keep you all updated on my journey!

I went from standard grips to midsize and hit the ball better then ever. I put them on two clubs to test. A 5 iron and a pw. I bought the winn dri tech midsize and am about 6ft tall so I don't know if that helps . when I try a jumbomax medium size much larger then the midsize winn dri tech I  was topping like crazy. the midsize seen to be the sweet spot for me.

I agree.  Replace your grip on one of you clubs and evaluate the results.

I would go purchase a couple different sizes and use an air compressor to put them on. Makes swapping them out super easy.  Test the different sizes. For under $30 you could try a mid, jumbo or undersized and figure out what works best for you. Use a club that is used all the time and test away
