Western NY MyGolfSpy Forum Members   Derek @EasyPutter, Steve @bens197, Ryan @Berg Ryman, and Matt @MattWillGolf

9/18/2024 is the first meetup for the Western NY MGS Forum members group at Ravenwood Golf Course https://www.ravenwoodgolf.com/ in Victor NY.  It was chosen as it is about the geographical center of our respective home locations.  We have a morning tee time that will give us time to arrive without the need to depart homes predawn. 

There is no plan for a live feed as CBS Sports has not responded, but this inaugural round has taken almost a year to become a thing and we should end up with plenty of photos, perhaps video clips as well for what we are hoping will be the first of many such shared rounds. 

This may attract interest from others who live in our end of NY State (just) west of Syracuse to Lake Erie and from Lake Ontario southern shore to northern PA.  The Western NY PGA Headquarters Section extends to Erie PA and as far south as Warren PA.  Should more MGSpies happen to want in, we will see how to expand things as we go.  As for now, this is our 2024 event.

Sadly not this year, this is more of a proof of concept/long time discussed finally doing it thing. I think me and @bens197 have talked about doing something together since I think Covid maybe... add Derrick who I've met on the MGS trips and Matt, who I haven't met even though we live a stone's throw away from each other and boom!

If it comes off and other people in/around the area (nudge nudge @USMCSnyper and @Swood1994) want to do it, we'd be more than happy to expand it to an annual potential thing.

I'd love to see it again in the future.  I live just over the PA border and get to Buffalo/Rochester frequently. My daughter lives in the Rochester area.

Absolutely would want this to grow if there’s enough interest. Everyone’s busy and schedules are difficult so I’m certainly proud of us for finding a date and time that worked.

I would definitely be interested in this next year! Ravenwood is a great course and not far from me at all. With enough notice I can certainly make it happen. Hoping I can start to make more MGS in the future schedule permitting. Have fun guys!

As a native Western New Yorker, I would love to play in this event …. and I have played Ravenswood with my son and my wife (my son lived in Victor, as well as in Seneca Falls, NY). I still get back to WNY semi-frequently (I now live in the Philadelphia suburbs, as I have since the early 1980s), and we play golf up there as well as in the Finger Lakes and over in Cazenovia and at the various Turning Stone Resort courses and at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course every time my wife and I visit the area.

With Barb @BKervin and my guys Jim @The1C3man, Marc @Marc Threeput, and Robert @Bsimpson24 added in I'm sure we can make a real event as this proof of concept has promise of being a success.  Add in @funkyjudge and anyone else wandering through as MGSpies are known to do, thinking even Chuck @cksurfdude of course, this could gain some real traction in 2025.

I LOVE this idea! In fact, this was a discussion amongst the staff today, the idea of doing some localized "events"/"meetups" - nothing "officially sanctioned," mind you, lol, but as only a few people (in the grand scheme of things) are ever able to go to the "Official" outings, things like this are SUCH a great idea! Kudos to getting it organized, and I can't wait to see the photos!

WOW! I would have been totally underdressed for the final tee! I know upstate New York can be classy but this is showing MGS as top of the class!!

Question for the group - gonna be in Ithica next weekend and we have one day we could golf .. any "must play" courses nearby anyone can suggest? Thx

If you can get on the Robert Trent Jones course at Cornell University, I highly recommend playing it!  The course is available to the public, and greens fees are about $70.

Another great college golf course in the area is also recommended; this is Seven Oaks at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY (across I-81 from Ithaca, so it is about a 40-45 minute drive from Ithaca). We have played Seven Oaks a few times, and it is generally in good condition, and is certainly a nice layout and a challenging course; however, when we were there two years ago this month, they were doing some course renovations and maintenance. I suspect that the work has been completed and if so it would be a good course to play.

Finally, if you want to play golf on the way to or from Ithaca, you might want to stop in Cooperstown and play the Leatherstocking Golf Course at the Otesaga Hotel.  Other than the three championship courses at Turning Stone Resort, Leatherstocking is the best course to be found anywhere in Central to South-Central New York State.

I mean, RTJ at Cornell is the premier recommendation, RaNic is nice, but pricy. 

I'd also pitch Trumansburg GC which might be more palatable on price or Walden Oaks if you're going further afield. Both within a half hour of Ithaca proper. 

EDIT: So looking at RTJ, apparently the front nine is undergoing a restoration, so it's back nine only, but if you want to double loop it, that appears possible.

Trumansburg is your best bet.

Seven Oaks Would be my top pick

RTJ Cornell is a great course but among those other two I’d rank it 3. 
 

If you want a short trip, I’ll again bump up Trumansburg as I mentioned above. (I did not see the earlier recommendations prior to commenting).

I haven't traveled much past Rochester for golf, did play Bonavista NY State Golf Course east side of Seneca Lake near Romulus and Tupper Lake GC, both courtesy of attending nearby Boy Scouting of America summer camps, and Thousand Islands CC thanks to GroupGolfer discount and proximity to Fort Drum.  Most of my golf is within a couple hours drive of Buffalo and Ithaca is more than a bridge too far unless there's a trip in the future I don't know about.  Will be interesting to learn about what you find there!
