What do you normally pay for a round of golf?

So, interesting question. Since there seem to be members here from all over, I think the average price for a round of golf makes for an interesting discussion.

Personally, here on the north side of Houston, I can usually play a pretty good course for under $50 on weekends and, more often than not, under $40 during the week.

The high end public courses around the city are usually around $80 on weekends before twilight, but can be had for around $50-$60 in the afternoon.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, there are plenty of courses around here that you can play for under $20. These courses usually aren't great by any means, but they're a decent value for the most part, especially if you're new to the game or are playing with someone relatively new.

Most of the golf that I play is booked through GolfNow or TeeOff. I usually look for their discounted rates (hot deals) and I'm able to save a few bucks. Because I can be flexible with when I play and don't necessarily need to go off at 7-8 in the morning so that I can be back by noon, GolfNow and TeeOff work great for me.

So what do you all usually spend (on average) for a round of golf? If I had to guess, I'd say that overall, I'm spending $30-$40 on average around here, cart included. Sometimes I'll splurge, sometimes I'll find an awesome deal!

During the week I can play some of the higher end courses here around Columbus, OH for around $30-40. On the weekend those get up around the $50-60 mark. I've found a few courses, however, that even on the weekends I can play for $20-30. I usually just stick around those. I'm kicking around the idea of joining a club around here but I think it might still be a couple years out.

Depends on the time of year and the course.

Since the question was usually it's between 40-50 in season, 30-40 shoulder season and 20-30 offseason (now until October).

If you want to play one of the two biggies in our immediate area Copperhead or TPC Tampa Bay, you are going way north of $100 in season and just south this time of year. We have lots of others to choose from within an 1 1/2 and they can go up to $250.

Pick your poison I guess.

For many years I played around Wesley Chapel for $20-$35 range....there are many courses in this range if you look for them ..last year I joined the club where I run a Game every Saturday. They gave me the over 65 rate even though I was only 63 at the time. This is now $225/month. I usually play twice a week, so I get in 7 or 8 rounds a month. Plus I get 10% off I. The Pub and Pro Shops. This also gets me a reciprocal membership in two other clubs about 40 minutes away (Crescent Oaks & Wentworth). Both are upscale clubs and fun to play although somewhat more difficult.

My membership due just got changed from 189 per month to 149 because we just adopted the Jr membership idea for players under the age of 34. You get 3 courses with this and unlimited range balls. Courses are pretty decent and one usually serves as the venue for the pga tour event qualifier for the Sanderson farms classic. Carts are an extra 19.80 a pop if you don't want to buy a trail plan. Overall it's the best deal in my area but rounds can easily creep up to 5 hours on some weekends.

My wife and I belong to a private club in the far western suburbs of Washington DC.  Our dues are about $4000/year, and between the two of us, we play between 120 and 150 rounds a year there.  That works out to around $30 per round.  When we travel, its more.  We visit our condo in Southern Pines a couple of times a year (never in the peak season), and I'd guess we average around $60 to $70 per round there, including cart.  When we visit Kohler in June, and play Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run, we're resigned to paying what it takes, but that'll be a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

My wife and I play practice rounds at a 9-hole executive course for $900 a year and that includes a cart, but we will usually walk about 50% of the time.  It's a nice place to practice, and it allows us to play other courses in the area and travel to play many other courses during the year.

In my area courses run about $25-35 with cart extra.  There are a few courses an hour drive away that are $50-90 depending on the time of year or time of day.  Of course, within 2 hours there are courses that are north of $100.

We just returned from a golf vacation in central Oregon and played for about $40-60 with a cart, but there are several high-end courses there that are well over $100 and you have to stay on the property to even get to play them.  I can have just as much fun on the less expensive courses.

I pay about 330 per month for my membership that includes two 18 hole courses that I can walk free, or ride for 22. No food/bev mins either.I typically ride 2-3 rounds a month and walk another 2-3. So realistically, I'm playing for 65 or less per round.  That said, those fees also include the fitness center that I use every rainy day, and would cost me another 40 / month elsewhere.

My home course is one I'm a member of. The monthly dues are $276 not including a cart but that does include all the range balls you want to hit. I walk 90% of the time. Figuring 4-5 rounds a month it cost me between $55-$69/rd. More on that later. There are two other private clubs and two muni's in the city. The city owned muni is a 36 hole facility and they charge about $25 w/cart. The other public course charges about the same. I occasionally go play at one of the other private clubs and their GF is $75 to $100. Are the Green Fees in my town a good deal? In my opinion... not really. I've been fortunate enough to have traveled to many areas of the state and country to play golf. Granted, where I live is in a rather harsh climate. Hot and dry. But, I've played courses elsewhere where the climate is harsh and found some really nice courses. And for equal or less. I want to stress to you guys living in parts of the country where it rains more and... well, things just grow how lucky you are. I've played your courses every time I do I come back home to disappointment.

Great to hear from you Plaid!

@ Dave - I have played all four of those Kohler Courses, the Black wolf ones numerous times - you will not be disappointed but you will be a lot lighter in the pocket book.  I will be very anxious on your take.  I think they are all great courses but I have a very, very strong opinion about the best one.  Here's a hint, its not the most famous of the group. :)

I also believe that if played from the tips my favorite one is more difficult for the pros than the famous one.

I've kicked around the idea of joining a club here in the Houston area as there are many good deals, but seeing as I play around 6-8 times per month (give or take) and I think I'd get burned out on the same course or 2, I like to keep my options open.

With that being said, joining a club becomes much more realistic when I have children that play and/or can take advantage of the other amenities provided by a private club. Until then, it makes the most sense for me to bounce around and play anywhere and everywhere and not feel tied down to one club.

Currently a member at local muni for $780 April1-Nov 1 - 18 hole course + 9 hole short course, unlimited range, putting/chipping area + 1/2 cart.

Various similar plans available, plus South Dakota Player's Pass, Groupon, discounts.

2 major markets and private member courses are somewhat more expensive but not excessive.

18 hole + 1/2 cart runs on average about $50, less (often MUCH less) at 9 hole public munis.

This is exactly why I do the same thing.  Yes, I could pay significantly more to join the CC but I would feel like I would have to play there all the time to get my money's worth.  We opted to join a little inexpensive course that is only $900 a year for both of us.  We can play anytime we want; no tee times and we use it for practice.  I feel that I can now afford to play other courses in the area for more of a challenge and we like to travel for golf weekends.

One of these years, I will have to actually figure out how much I spend on these golf outings and compare that to the CC cost.  But even if it is more, I like seeing different courses throughout the year.

I have a membership at Dye's Valley at Sawgrass, the sister course to the Stadium.  Pay $275 a month plus $32.50 cart fees.  So comes out to about $75-80 a round.  But it's a Tour caliber course (home of the Web.com Tour Championship) and in the opinion of many of us, almost as difficult as the Stadium.  Plus, it has world class practice facilities that I can use anytime.  I guess I'm spoiled, plus semi-retired and fortunately able to afford it, but to me its worth it.  Other good, accessible, non-resort courses range from $27 to $40 weekdays and $35 to 50 weekends.

Here in Austin, I have run the gambit on Greens fees.

My average round is probably $35. I have played plenty of $10 rounds using hot deals from GolfNow.

My local favorite is probably the 12:53pm, $10 round at Pine Forest in Bastrop. Hot time of the day, but cheap.

Most of the decent public courses here have been about $40.

Obviously the top of my expensive list has been Wolfdancer at $100.

Thanks, revkev, I'll remember to post something once I get back.  We're playing the Straits and the River courses.  I've read a number of opinions that the River is a better course than the Straits, but that both are outstanding experiences.  I'm excited, but its still a month away.

I'd say $25 is the average for me, but I walk so you'd have to add about $15 cart fee to ride.

2 of the 3 courses I play regularly are time-tiered though.  About $55 early morning decreasing throughout the day to around $20 by 2pm.  If I play early, I play the 3rd course....later in the day and I'll play a tiered one.

@ Dave, I'll clue you in because you won't get to play the truly best "course" of the bunch.  Blackwolf run was originally an 18 hole course.  The front 9 was the current Meadow Valley back (Except that the 1st tee was in a different place from the 10th tee which is cut into the woods for continuity sake) and the back nine was the first 5 of the River plus the last 4.  They call that the Championship course and have it set up for play on occasion.  It is a spectacular course.

I get why Whistling Straits is used for big tour events, it was built for them in fact, for us though the River is much more difficult.  There is plenty of room at Whistling so long as you are on the proper set of tees.  The PGA doesn't even use the tips, they exist to provide alternates for the par 3's, wind direction and to create options for various days of a four day event.  There are a couple of holes where not everyone in a Tour field could reach the fairway without a favorable wind.  So if you play the blues or greens you'll be fine there.  Doesn't really matter where you play the River from, it's tight and tricky and will test you from start to finish.

I would love to see how touring pros would handle the 9th.

Here in NW Iowa we have a lot of "nice" muni courses around me. After reading all of your posts I feel fortunate to have the membership that I have. It is $475 for the year, that includes cart shed rental for my cart. I can hit all the balls i want on our tiny range. I can also go to 4 other 9 hole courses. These aren't high end courses by any means but they aren't the worse. I do have 3 higher end courses near by that are in the $50 range.

Depends where I was at.

NJ the courses were all around 30-40 bucks and closer to 45 on the weekend.

In Florida it was 20 and below.

In Yuma where options are limited and fluctuate from 10-40 bucks depending on the time of year, I play different courses based on the time of year.

One course in particular went from 20 bucks to 50, and I refused to spend that much.

AT my current salary level I can't afford to play any place over that much unless I'm on vacation.

Well I can tell you now that for the next four months I'm going to spend $150 per month and $11 cart fee for a Fazio Course in perfect condition. That's a tad over $30 if I play 7 times and under if I play 8. I will also get as many range balls as I want, a weekly skins game, a free lesson and playing lesson with the pro and lots of other cool stuff for my family.

I'm feeling pretty good about it right now.

Can I move in?  I'll pay the difference for a family membership.

How much does falconhead run these days? Played it a few years ago and it was a ton of fun. Sadly, that's the only Austin golf experience I have. :(
