  1. Just returned from my big golf trip of the year.. played the Bandon Dunes rota. Got roasted at Pacific, but I’d just gotten out of my car after driving four days and sleeping in a tent to get there. Shot an 80, 84, and 87 at Sheep Ranch, which my be my new favorite on that property. Only takes a few that come up short on those humps and bumps to run up the score. My big surprise was an 80 at Trails with a hole out eagle fr 54 yards on the downhill 14th and a closing birdie. Got my hopes up too much and tried too hard for an 85 at Bandon, and closed out the week with a couple birdies to shoot another 80 at OldMac. I’m now Open Championship ready. Bring on the ground game

  2. Late to posting, but some used TS2 hybrids that were on sale for ~$60 each arrived and will be replacing my beat-to-death TaylorMade rescue. I’ve already since replaced the stock grips with Lamkin Sonar+ Midsize grips and they are going to battle my CP2 Pros for my new go-to grips going forward.

Its Truck day!! Been a great 8 years at this house which has provided many great memories and saw us bring home 3 babies and 2 dogs. Bittersweet for sure, but we’re very excited for the next chapter for our family just across town.

  4. Got another round in while the kiddo was in camp. Was 95 and hot with not a cloud in the sky. 41/38 11 pars and 7 bogeys Start to finish looking back was a very hard and respectable round. Felt like I was playing a lot worse because I was scrambling. Tee shots were good as a whole but was missing by just a few feet on the front and on this course a few feet is a big difference. I had 5 shots on the front 9 that ii had to keep very low and advance. Land the green and 2 putt bogey. Back 9 was much cleaner and had a stretch from 7-11 of pars. I still struggled with 10’ and…in my eyes anyway…spoiled what could have been really a truly great round. Also had sweet revenge on 16/17/18 after doubling each the other day. Par/par/par. 60 yards and in saved my round for sure on the front as well as a couple creative 2nd shots Hole of the day was 18. Decent tee shot but cut myself off and had to keep the 2nd real low. Didn’t cut as much as I wanted and was left with a slippery shot over the green side bunker. Finally drained a putt

  5. I wouldn't buy one today but I think if we truly subscribe to the ethos of this forum, it's finding the best gear for you regardless of brand. That should also include design. A chipper never passed the cool test. Time to toss the cool test to the bin...I'd rather go low than look cool.

  6. Got out to my favorite course in CLE yesterday morning - Sugar Bush in Garrettsville, Ohio. I shot a 40/39 with 0 birdies, 0 doubles, and 0 penalties. I had 5 up & downs, but 3 3 putts. I always love playing here. So I've been gaming the Z-Star for a few years now, but I've been dabbling with the X balls this season. I tried ProV1x, TP5x, Tour BX, and the XV. These balls just don't hold greens for me, and I'm not sure why. It's weird because these are supposed to be higher spinning off wedges than the Z-Star. Yet the Z sits within a foot or so of it's pitch mark whereas these X balls jump 10-15 feet from the mark. I did have 2 rounds mixed in, one with BX and one with TP5x, that I was getting a few feet of rip back from the pitch. But those were early morning rounds on freshly watered & dewy greens. Anyone have ideas?

My sister got married last weekend they are on their honeymoon, currently in Ireland. She just sent this picture in the family WhatsApp of her hanging out at the clubhouse while my brother-in-law plays Ballybunion. I'm so jealous right now...

  8. So... Top Gun is my favorite movie, i joined the navy because I watched it at a very young and influential age. So for Top Gun2 my wife was looking to get me tickets for opening night... she found that she could get me a private theater for (only) $140. Sure, I could have brought up to 40 friends, but instead I got to have a whole theater to myself. No popcorn crunching in my ear, obnoxious people talking. Just me. I did allow my wife and 3 year old to attend, but he fell asleep before the movie started and slept until we picked him up to take him back to the car. Every seat in the private theater was a full power recliner. This has ruined ever going to the movies again. But it was amazing

Being in LA the past couple of weeks and playing some lower end munis, i got a glimpse of what it is like to be a longer hitter. Back in the PNW, even up until June, it was abnormally rainy. So i am used to hitting balls all carry even with a driver and then plugged. In LA, the lower end munis, they fairways are cut short, but the grass gets brown and super dry. Had a 360 yard hole, hit a nice drive, was up the right side of the fairway. When i walked up to look for my ball, i was looking for it at around 250 yards from the tee and spent at least a minute looking, wondering how i could have lost a ball in the fairway. Kept walking farther and saw a ball, first questioned is that even a ball, and second questioned if that was someone else's ball from another hole where they hit an omega slice. Walked up to it, saw it was a Maxfli, knew no one else but me on that course is playing a current year Maxlfi Tour with the CG lines. Had 60 yards in. Distance off the tee is a game changer.

  11. One of my cronies we call Checkers has that same problem----- He got one of those Square Strikers or Green Thing as we call it. That completely changed his short game. He saves no joke about 5 shots a round. His brother Little Bear (RIP) was raising cain about it because Checkers started beating him.

  15. ... As a first year lifeguard (there were some that had been there for many years) I was assigned to the park area not the lucrative nice hotels. I had to pass my Water Safety Certification in case I actually had to go in the water and save someone. I went in to help a few but never a lifesaving instance. But most LG's had no certification because their job was not to provide any safety for swimmers, it was to rent beach chairs, umbrella's and rafts. One stoner, a veteran with an excellent rental record couldn't even swim but his wife that worked on the same stand with him could LOL! Talk about low standards.

  16. For those that are considering the Ping Chipr, i spoke to Ping about fitting for length for it. Should you treat it like an iron for length or truly like a putter for length. They said putter. For me, that is important because I play my irons -0.5" but my putter is 31.5". I updated my order to be 32". So its going to be very different for me, instead of chipping with a 9 iron, i will be chipping with a club that has a 9 iron loft but is 3.5" shorter than the 9 iron i play.

  17. Hey, I hope I haven’t come across as criticizing anyone who bags this…certainly not my intent. Yeah, I am quite confident around the green and can’t see giving away a spot in the bag for a club with the same loft as a short iron I already have. But I’m truly asking from a place of “seek first to understand…” I’ve really never struggled around the green…90% of the time I keep my low point in front of the ball, keep the handle in front of the clubhead, and I’m good to go (unless I’m trying a flop). Driver has always been the culprit when I struggle…

  19. Jlukes is a much better golfer than me, but I will give my opinion why i think the chipper will be a good fit for myself (besides the fact i like buying clubs). I chip like crap. The closer i get to the green, the worse it gets. I can execute ok sometimes with a high lofted wedge, but i know that my chances are better with a lower lofted club so i almost always try to do a putting style chip. I've been using a 5 hybrid quite a bit for chipping, but will also chip with anything from a 5 iron to a PW, but putting style. What I don't like about the putt chip is it gets the heel very off the ground. with the toe down, my chips tend to come out to the right of my intended line, i think primarily because my eyes get tricked by where the clubface is actually aiming when the heel is so much off the ground. sometimes it works well, but sometimes i aim really poorly. but my distance control is pretty good with this method. also, given my height and proportions, besides the putt-style chip, the best club i have chipped with is a 34" lob wedge. works pretty well for chips, but i don't like that length for anything more than a chip. so this Ping Chipr will be like having a 9 iron that is more upright and plays 34.5" (i ordered it -0.5").

  21. ... Yup, just like courses charge $350 in winter because snowbirds and tourists will pay it. And why not if they are booked with those willing to pay it? Simple supply and demand with actual value irrelevant, although personal value is always what anyone is willing to pay. Locals play the same courses in the summer for $49.

Another game of Wolf today with the same two guys as Tuesday. If I have my best game, I can hang with them, but they are more consistent than I am (and they know this course and greens better than I do). Not so good today; shot 81 with no birdies, but no doubles either. The biggest difference today was poor putting. Had my chances but couldn't convert. The other guys tied with rounds of 78. The bad news is that I gave back 9 of the 12 quarters I won on Tuesday!! Seems like every time I had a decent hole as the Wolf, one of them had a better hole!

  30. I’ve always had a decent short game and from day one used mostly 8/9 iron. I think that’s the reason the chipper didn’t fit me.
    4 points
  31. I didn’t want to jump in on this and be negative. I did pickup a chipper maybe 15 years ago. I was surprised I found one LH. Used it for a better part of a year. I really didn’t care for it, no better results than my 8 or 9 iron. I think it’s one of those personal decision clubs. Saying this we do have a couple of players here who play them and lovem.
    4 points
  32. ... You probably have a good short game. I think it is all about confidence. I am not going to hit a chipper any different than I will hit my 9 iron as well as preferring more options with different clubs depending on my lie and pin location. But I play with plenty of gofers that have little confidence in their chipping and pitching. While most are higher index players I have played with low index players that admit chipping is the weakest part of their game. ... It is hard to underestimate the confidence of a club designed for the sole purpose of chipping as opposed to a 9 iron that is built for full shots and I think that can allow any player to have a different approach. Even if the different approach would work with their 9 iron if executed in an identical way, they still may feel like "this chipper will make me a better chipper" and that is worth the price alone imo. I have already said even though I don't think it would ever make it into my bag, I would love to play a round or two with one just to see if my results are any different.

  33. Thinking about the top of my bag for next season already. Currently have the Super Hybrid at 16 degrees and the Epic Flash 4 hybrid at 20 degrees. The Epic Flash is essentially a 6/7 wood, and I can expect reasonably struck shots to carry about 225-235 from the tee and maybe from the deck if I really catch one. I don't use the Super Hybrid much - I hit one tee shot with it every round at my home course and I've used it sparingly otherwise. This winter I was able to get 250+ carry out of it off the deck at times on the Mevo+, but realistically on course it's probably a 230-240 club. Those two clubs and my Cobra 4 Utility are now the only non-fitted clubs in my bag, so I'm thinking a top of bag fitting might be in order next spring. Not sure if I'd want to go to back to a wood or not, it's just so rarely used that I don't think I'd justify the money. Really tough to justify too much more money when the course I play most often just isn't long enough. It was a lot of fun getting out last week on vacation to a 6,800-ish yard course where a lot of different clubs got a workout. I'm no more accurate with the Super Hybrid than driver, so I never give up the distance except where I'm absolutely forced to.

... In the MGS ball tests the Maxfli Tour compared to the X with the driver: +6.67 yds High Speed +14.67 yds Mid Speed -1.39 yds Slow Speed ... Figuring I am somewhere between mid and slow combining the two I get +6.64 yds with the Tour. As I have always said these number are just starting points and everyone is different but around 3-5 yds longer is about right for me.

  35. Ditto. I think overall it's a much more consistent result with the Motore X than the AutoFlex. I had a nice honeymoon period with the AF, but mishits seemed to be more penalized than with the Motore. I haven't been hitting my driver all that well this season, but ShotScope has my P-AVG at 278 yards (all Motore) and Arccos had my smart distance at 284 yards (mostly AF). A wet spring did not help overall distance and I also have done zero speed training work since the fall. I have managed a few 300-plus ones with a little wind or elevation help, but overall I still wish I was a more consistent driver of the golf ball.

I had the same thing on the PNW Spy trip to Eastern Washington. My average drive during my time there was 40 yards longer than at any point earlier in the season. I feel like half the drives I've hit on the west side so far this year have had a negative rollout.

  38. I was always a skeptic. I remember playing at a tournament in Miami, FL in 2005 and a Pure rep was on site selling his technology. I kindly declined as I just didn't think it was relevant for me or my game. Fast forward to today, the quality of products is far better than the Dynamic Gold shafts I played back then and the evidence in support of why it's not necessary has been clearly laid out above. I was a little surprised to hear last month when I was at CC that the pured shaft is part of the process. What I ended up with is an LAGolf shaft that has a logo that is almost exactly facing down at address....exactly as intended...

  42. Great cart. I have probably 1,000+ miles on it over four seasons and it's finally just starting to have a few minor issues. There's a support wire/cable that keeps the two wheel arms from opening beyond where they should and it finally snapped this year. Been meaning to fix it but it keeps on rolling. Definitely recommend some dry silicone lubricant on some of the moving parts (at least the ones you don't touch), and also keep the screws tight on the bag holders. Mine were pretty loose at the beginning of the season and a gentle tightening of the screws fixed it right up.

  44. ... Tiger did not play older kids as a jr because he (and Earl) wanted to learn how to not just win, but crush his opponents, something he could not do with older kids. Beat them, sure but not completely dominate them. Liv does not have the best talent in the world so it would hold no value for him. And Major wins was always his ultimate goal, not money.
