Looking for any and all options for a driving iron or a hybrid-iron. I currently switch between a 3 iron and a 3 hybrid with a 4 hybrid that stays in the bag, but I am looking to replace the hybrids with irons. Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas? I've tested the calloway driving irons for this year and I hit them well, but want to hear how you guys finish off the top end of the bag and also what has been your experience if you switched from hybrid to iron or vice versa.

I think everyone is different and it comes down to ball striking ability and how you want the ball to react.  You’ve mentioned two of the three option, hybrid and driving iron with the third being fairway wood.   A lot of people are going 7 and 9 wood to replace long irons.  I went with hybrids.  Some like the concept of a driving iron.   I test driving irons as part of most wanted testing and for me I don’t think I strike the ball well enough to consider putting one on the bag.   Driving irons probably require the highest swing speed and most accurate ball striking.   TXG did a video comparing the three and explained the perforce difference so you might want to search their YouTube channel for the video.

I encourage you to look at sub70. I custom ordered a 699u 24° to fit a gap in my yardage. It's among the best performing clubs in my bag now. $110 brandy new with upgrade to KBS shaft and no1 pro 50 grip.

I was so impressed, I checked out their pre-owned section and picked up a 6-PW to go with it.

Added: They have a demo program, you can test a 19.5° 3ut and if you don't like it only costs $20 after you return it.

@Cameronpaulm I am a big fan. Check out their demo program.

Previous attempts to fit that yardage were an Apex '14 24°ut that couldn't match my Apex '19 6i for distance, Titleist T-MB individual iron that I didn't have the ball striking to wield, and a BB21 7w I hit too high.

I had settled on just having large gaps between 4w-3h-5h. The hybrids are +2/-1 adjustable so I had them at 17°-21°-25° into a 26.5° 6i.

Now I can set them 17°-20°-23° playing into the 24° UT. The hybrid smashes the ball and the 699u spreads butter on it and slides it through the air. So 1° loft difference is perfectly gapping there.

The top of my bag is tightly gapped and playing well, but of course now the short game has gone to shreds. 😄

... Well said cnosil. Experimenting and finding what works best for your swing is always a good idea. My game is built around my iron swing so a DI is a natural fit for me and I love mine. At 70, I don't have a high swing speed but my ball striking is a strength. Driver is my most inconsistent club and a hybrid is ... well ... a hybrid of an iron and a wood so I have some success using one and added a 22* 4hy to my bag this year although I still use my 4 iron more often. But the 4hy is great from fairway bunkers and light rough or when I need max carry.

... But back to a DI's, I do think they are a niche product and the only way to know if one is right for you is to play one and find out. That said, I think most will probably find more consistent performance with hybrids and 7/9 woods.

Haha.  Just wondering if anyone has had a chance to swing these two shafts side by side (or at least had a chance to test out the Fujikura Axiom shafts)?  I'm considering an iron shaft upgrade at some point in my future and will try to do some testing of my own (I have tried the Aerotech i95... great shafts).  But Fujikura is... well... Fujikura.

Doing some due diligence here...

I've not tried the Axiom Velocore shaft. However, have installed the Aerotech i110cw in a 5 iron and really like it.  In comparison to the Elevate 105 steel shaft in a 5 iron, I prefer Aerotech Steel Fiber.  I might try the Axiom in a 6 iron in same set as 5 iron.

My dilemma is I need to carry 205 consistently with the club under my 3 wood. I can hit my 3 iron 250+ plus but that's about 60 yards of roll lol. I think I may toy with the idea of a 5/7 wood that I can carry hopefully 200+ and then replace the 4 hybrid with a driving iron that will gap between the 5 wood and my 5 iron. I appreciate you all for sharing

Best advice is spend big on the simulator/launch monitor. We have a optishot 2 that feels like an arcade game. Doesn't pick up driver swings and the launch monitor is wonky. I've seen my buddy top a ball to not even off the mat and it will carry 360+ on the simulator.

Yeah, there is definitely a barrier for entry there!!

You are swinging the regs right?  I can't disagree with you about the performance, at least during my testing.  I went to my local golf haunt yesterday and they had a used set of Cobra King blades with the Steel Fiber i95's in stiff... and even a little more rigid than I'm used to... they felt NICE.  My previous experience with the regulars are even better.. not sure why I'm not playing them now.  Curiosity about the Axioms as much as anything... are they really as good as the price.  Case and point... I never would have been in the camp of aftermarket high end shafts... UNTIL is put the Graphite Design Tour AD UB-6 in my Driver and my 3 wood.  May be placebo effect... but the feel night and day to the Tensei shafts, at least to me!  (I know you are a fan of the GDTAD shafts as well, that is why I mention it).

I’m actually about to trade my L.A.B. Putter in for a different putter that isn’t a lie angle balanced putter. Now that I’m not doing the Zalatoris wiggle in my backswing with my putter and using a friends putter that was a face balanced putter, I holed more with his than mine. I have switched to the XCaliber Rapid Taper graphite iron shafts (95 gram, R-flex). Although I have enjoyed playing the KBS Tour Graphite (a/k/a “TGI”) 80-S iron shafts for about 5 years, I always liked slightly heavier iron shafts, and when you go any heavier than 80 grams in KBS graphites, you have no choices below S+ or X flex.

These Rapid Taper 95-R shafts are as consistent and accurate as any shaft that I have hit in a very, very long while. I did both butt and tip frequency measurements on all 10 Rapid Taper shafts that I purchased and the spread from lowest to highest frequency was 4 CPM at the tips and less than 3 CPM in the shaft butts …. That’s absolutely unheard of in any other graphite shaft model, in my experience!  Robin Arthur said that it took him 3-1/2 years to get this shaft model “just right”, and I believe it.

Was in contact with Carl's customer service and they confirmed that those on sale are the 2019 T300 releases (Titleist changed over all the AP1, AP2, AP3 series to the T series in 2019).  Next release was 2021 which are currently in stores and catalogs and now the 2023s will be released this fall.  No staggered rollout for these clubs.  Have been discussing the new clubs with the Titleist rep at events we work together as well as discussing which shafts I should get my Titleist certified fitter.

Its not funny stop laughing at me. lol. I checked on my 923 Hot metal H/L Mizunos that were on order at a golf store an hour from here and they said Mizuno had some issues and no luck so I trotted my big butt down to the store and tried a few clubs and thought why not try the T300's., what could it hurt I thought. I said stop laughing damnit.

Don’t think you go wrong with the T300 or 923HM both great clubs.
I have the 923 HM and am happy with them.

(I know you are a fan of the GDTAD shafts as well, that is why I mention it).

... Yup, i95 regular flex. I haven't thought about iron shafts in years because I am just so pleased with the Steelfibers. Drivers? That's a different story LOL. Fwiw I am a big believer in the placebo effect because it either influences us play better or they are superior and helps us play better. Win-win! I am hitting the Ventus Red Velocore right now and because it is "much more accurate with mishits" and exactly why so many play it on all the tours, so I don't care if it is a placebo effect.  🙈🙉🙊 After I get very comfortable with it I'll go back to my AD-IZ for a few rounds and see how the Stealth 2 HD fares with that shaft. (and yes, I am a big fan of GD shafts and happy to hear you like your AD-UB!)

Well since I am on vacation of course my wedge would get delivered to my house while I am gone. Don’t worry though, I have family near me that was gracious enough to secure the goods. However thinking about my new club has got me thinking about the last club that hasn’t been replaced in the last 18 months, my 3 Hybrid. Went to a PGASS and swung a couple options from Callaway and Cobra and feel in love with the stock build King TEC. But they had a Callaway with the KBS Tour Hybrid Proto that felt amazing as well. So I have a feeling there will be a KING TEC with a Tour Proto in my near future.

Thought we could have a thread to hear about what equipment is on everyone's mind?  Thinking about pulling the trigger on something? Waiting for a release date?  Drooling over something but just dont have the funds?

What equipment is on your mind?

Hi,

Great idea for a thread! If you're thinking about purchasing new equipment, it's always a good idea to do your research and compare options before making a decision. Keep in mind factors such as your budget, your specific needs and intended use, and the quality and features of the equipment.

If you're waiting for a release date on a new product, it's a good idea to stay up to date with the manufacturer's announcements and release schedules. You may also want to consider pre-ordering if the option is available.

Remember that it's important to make informed decisions when it comes to purchasing new equipment, so don't rush into anything without doing your due diligence. And don't forget to take care of your current equipment by properly maintaining and storing it.

Regards,

Callaway pre-owned 1 day sale got me looking. I don't need to buy anything though.

Things that caught my eye for you club ho's with needs or wants:

Apex UW multiple in clearance FW section for around $130 with non factory shafts.

Speaking of non factory shafts, there's a T300 5-6-7i in the "other brands" individual irons for about $70 each. They have LAGP black RXR shafts in them! 🤔 I have T200 8-9i with steel AMT shafts and think this would be amazeballs together but would be too many sets going at one time.

Wedges everywhere. Clearance wedges and in the other brands wedge section. If you want to refresh your wedges with some "new to you" ones check it out.

I forget what shafts exactly are in them but it was like "not for me but someone is gonna smash that" reaction for a couple.

Went back and looked it up, @CFreddie it was Grafalloy Blue standard flex in a 19° UW. Too whippy for me, but I know guys that would whip that around their head so fast.

Also forgot the Titleist 975f 14.5° in clearance FWs with Vista Pro 70 R flex for $2.91. THAT is a clearance.

So my dad finally retired and is looking to get on the golf course regularly and take it serious again. He's looking hard at TaylorMade Stealth irons and Cleveland Launcher UHX irons. The Stealth he has tried and hit well, the Cleveland he has not tried. Anybody have experience with those? Wanting to get them for his retirement gift.

Mizuno.  I bot a new MP 18 FlI Hi MMC 3 iron (18 degrees) and while I am truly just a duffer (injuries, Stacy Lewis curve spine) I love it.  It is not current anymore.  But I would look at any Mizuno.

Wasn't planning on it, but Mizuno ES21 black wedges, lefotver new and demo ones on sale for $80, mostly 58 and 60 s and a few 56s, I fell for the 58 deg 8 bounce.  Have not used it yet, but it will replace a Minuno T7 60 degree.  After my shoulder heals.

In the very early stages of looking at irons. I went from original AP2’s to the Taylormade RSI’s that I have now. Funny enough I have been considering the cobra irons and I jumped to the chance to be a tester. Also looking at Taylormade 790’s.

Awesome - would love to hear your thought process on your next set!  If you haven't seen the preliminary reads on the Edel & Paradym irons here, I'd HIGHLY suggest it.
