The 119th US Open

This brings me back a few years, I love watching US Opens at Pebble. I get bored of the commentary from the PBPA... but the US Open is far more spectacular.

I must say all of the bad press the last few years has given USGA a black eye somewhat. They’ve been fun to watch, but the players complaining year in and year out has to grow tiresome.

I think the biggest story line is Phil and getting the career grand slam. He won the PBPA this year... yeah sure it’s whole different animal for a major championship, but I bet he wishes that win earlier this year was this week.

Can Brooks Koepka do something magical? I am actually pulling for him to go back to back to back. 3 US Opens in a row would be something that hasn’t been done since 1903, 1904, and 1905 by Willie Anderson.

DJ seems in prime form to be in the final group on Sunday, as does Patrick Cantlay.

Could it be the year of the sleeper?

Where did Tommy Fleetwood go?

Maybe Kuch will finally break through?

Rickie?

The story line the golf writers want you to follow is the Chasing 82/16 story. I don’t see this happening. I personally think The Masters was the Big Cats last major. Go ahead Tiger, prove me wrong, I won’t be mad.

Any story line that plays out will be great, I can feel the energy in the air. Or maybe that’s just the massive amounts of fog that rolled in today.

Thoughts?

I'll be rooting for Phil, but I don't honestly see it happening. I'd probably place my bets on DJ.

I have to root for Phil, but I can't pick him because if I do, he will miss the cut.  After all of his 2nds, he deserves a Grand Slam.

I don't think the winner will be a bomber this time.  It will be someone who can carve up the fairways and putt on Poa.

  1. Rickie Fowler
  2. Patrick Cantlay
  3. Graeme McDowell

I’m not a statistics guy but I think it’s worth noting for the shortest course with the smallest greens this year on Tour.

Justin Thomas is 4th in GIR and 5th in strokes gained tee to green.
Patrick Cantlay is 1st in Scoring Avg and Scrambling.

I’ll take these two.

I (sadly) agree re @Shankster comment about Tiger, but I hope we are both wrong.

I am terrible at picking for the Majors, I don't pick the clearly obvious elite who are on form, then the winner comes from the clearly obvious elite who are on form😂

I think Rahm could do well, and my off the wall pick is Luke Donald who is a master scrambler. All depends if his mental game is strong after such a long time away from the top.

I hope the USGA don't do something stupid this time around.  They can't seem to help themselves.  But @Shanksteris correct, the players incessant whining and complaining is getting very old.  They are pampered brats playing for millions of dollars every week.  Life could be significantly more difficult!

Twenty-one (21) players made more than $100k at The Memorial. The runner-up made $17k shy of a cool million dollars for NOT winning!  So far for the 2018-2019 season, exactly 75 players have earned over a million dollars.  According to ESPN, several have done so without a single top 10 finish!

Shut up and play golf!

Just read that Brockton Firefighter Matt Parziale qualified for this years Open. He made the cut last year at Shinnecock so who knows. Both he and Stewart Hagestad (also in) have some serious game as Mid-Amateur Champions.

DJ takes this one. He just needs to play four days and not his usual three...

BTW, I'll be there next week. Keep an eye on my Instagram feed (@golfspydave)for photos and story updates. Let me know if you will be attending as well. Perhaps we can meet for a tasty beverage 🙂

Plan for Saturday is to camp out on #7. Did that last Open and it was super fun. Loved hearing Poulter say "How the F00K am I supposed to play this hole." after hitting his tee shot.

Remember, Kevin Na says he only has a chance on shorter courses. And he’s been on a roll.

He’s my sleeper pick.

Hard to bet against Rory this week, but we all know how fickle the Golf Gods can be.

Personally I'm hoping Brooks doesn't do a 'Brooks' and walk away with it again, nothing against him but I'd like to see Rory or Rickie take it.

Whoever does I hope it will be a closely fought exciting tournament.

I'm rooting for Phil this year. I mean the guy has to win a US Open right? I mean other than that, I'd root for DJ or Speith to be in contention, Koepka to be skinny again. However, I'm most rooting for the greenskeepers and USGA to not screw up the course.

I get sick and tired of listening to the players complain about the setup. It's the same for everyone just play golf.

I do believe that even if they tried the USGA will have trouble baking out the course like a few previous US Opens. The weather in Monterrey just doesn't allow it. Of course now that I said this they will...

I think there will be a surprise winner this year. Someone who is known but not a top tier guy.

Kisner is my choice.

While I do agree that Pebble brings different players into the mix both because length is often negated and the familiarity factor I'm liking DJ this weekend.

We'll see

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD
